Echostar’s pay television platforms Dish Network and Sling TV lost 348,000 customers during the first three months of the year, the company revealed in a financial disclosure on Wednesday.
The erosion included a loss of 135,000 subscribers at Sling TV, which saw its customer base fall to 1.92 million accounts during the first quarter (Q1) of 2024. Dish satellite lost another 213,000 customer accounts to end Q1 with 6.26 million subscribers, Echostar revealed.
The total number of pay TV customers served between Dish and Sling TV stood at just under 8.2 million accounts, Echostar said. Revenue from its pay TV segment dropped to $2.726 billion, or 8.2 percent lower compared to Q1 2023.

The new deal restores channels in 27 markets for Dish customers, including affiliates of ABC, NBC and The CW.
There have been so many contract disputes between channel owners and pay-tv providers recently, it can be hard to keep track of them all. On the same September day when Disney and Charter Communications owned the news cycle by settling their own carriage dispute, a new disagreement began between Dish and Hearst Television that caused channels in 27 markets to go dark. Users of Dish’s live TV streaming service Sling TV were not affected.
Dish and Hearst agreed to a new retransmission contract this weekend, bringing local channels back for affected customers. It’s highly likely that Hearst secured higher retransmission fees as part of the deal with Dish. With its shares in free fall after a dismal third-quarter earnings report, Dish Network executives faced the music with Wall Street, conceding in an earnings call that they face an array of intensifying challenges.
“We have a narrow path, but there is a path, to achieve financial stability and make sure we meet our commitments,” Chairman Charlie Ergen said. “Having been through this for a long time, we’ve had narrow paths before.”
The company’s shares plunged more than 37% on more than eight times normal trading volume to finish the day at $3.44. It was the stock’s biggest single-day drop in the nearly three decades since it began trading and its lowest closing price in 25 years.
Along with trying to squeeze money out of its legacy pay-tv business, whose subscriber levels are dropping by double-digit year-over-year rates, the company is still trying to pull off a grand strategic pivot.

Cable customers must feel like they’re walking through a minefield these days. There’s seemingly no way of knowing when channels might disappear from cable services, and new disputes can pop up overnight with no end in sight.
Dish customers are hoping the latest dispute between their service provider and network owners is a brief one. The channels are mostly local broadcast affiliates of ABC, CBS, The CW, and NBC, as well as MyNetworkTV. Dish Network customers are losing access to 37 local channels across 27 markets Friday as the company has failed to reach a carriage agreement with Hearst Television.
The impasse impacts ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, Mnt and Ind channels.
The satellite television provider argues that the media giant is “demanding tens of millions of dollars in rate increases that would affect customers, while it devalues its product by making programming available elsewhere, even as viewership declines.”
“Demanding higher rates for the same entertainment and news just doesn’t make sense, especially as Hearst’s content is widely available on other platforms,” Dish’s executive vice president and video services group president Gary Schanman said in a statement. “This hurts our customers in their pocketbooks and their ability to watch the programming and content they want. Sling TV, the internet-streaming division of Dish Network, is doubling down on free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) and free, ad-supported VOD — looking to beef up its offering for consumers who balk at paying a monthly subscription fee.
The redubbed Sling Freestream is launching with 210 free channels and 41,000-plus on-demand titles. It’s a rebranding — and expansion— of Sling Free, which has been its free, live TV streaming service with some 150 channels and AVOD selections. In addition, Sling Freestream users can subscribe to more than 50 standalone streaming services, including AMC+, Discovery+, MGM+ and Paramount’s Showtime.
With Freestream, Sling is trying to lower the barrier to entry even further, by eliminating the requirement that users create an account to be able to start streaming free content. And by the end of this spring, Sling Freestream is on track to offer more than 400 channels, said Gary Schanman, group president of Sling TV.

Sling TV has become the latest TV streaming service to hike its monthly subscription prices, specifically for its base Orange and Blue services as the price of streaming content continues to rise.
On Thursday, Sling TV group president Gary Schanman announced monthly price rises for base services by 5 each. That would put the monthly cost for Sling Orange or Sling Blue at 40, and Sling Orange & Blue will be 55.
New Sling TV customers will see the new price immediately, while existing customers will see the change on their next bill after Dec. 3. Schanman cited rising content expenditures by Sling TV for the subscription price hikes.
“We’re deeply committed to keeping costs low and continually work with programmers to provide service you can rely on, which is why we haven’t raised prices in nearly two years, maintaining a generous cost advantage compared to our competitors,...

Dish Network’s Sling TV is hiking prices on its monthly streaming plans by 5, bringing both packages to 40 per month.
Sling TV’s updated pricing will go into effect immediately for new subscribers and apply to existing customers’ next bill on or after Dec. 3, 2022. With the change, the monthly cost for Sling Orange (which includes ESPN) and Sling Blue (which includes Fox and NBC channels) will now each be 40 per month, and the Sling Orange & Blue bundle will be 55 monthly.
“Raising prices for our customers is not something we take lightly,” Sling TV group president Gary Schanman wrote in a blog post. “We recognize that historically high inflation is impacting our customers every day and our goal is not to be another burden to your wallet.”
Schanman continued, “However, Sling doesn’t own the networks you watch — we pay programmers for their channels, and the price of programming continues to rise.

Quibi, built for mobile-only viewing by an audience envisioned to be phone-toting millennials, now wants to get on more living-room TVs.
The company, founded by ex-movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, has been in talks with both Roku and Amazon about building native apps for their connected-tv platforms, Variety has learned. In Amazon’s case, that would be its family of Fire TV devices.
Quibi’s negotiations with Amazon have “recently picked back up,” according to a source familiar with the discussions. Roku’s talks about bringing Quibi to the platform are said to be in very early stages; a source cautioned that Roku may walk away from a deal based on the revenue-sharing agreement proposed by Quibi. (A Quibi rep did not provide comment on its talks with Roku and Amazon by press time.)
One reason for the urgency: Quibi’s mobile app download and viewership numbers have fallen far short of its expectations,...
