Suddenly finding herself in the never-before-seen Land of Luck, the unluckiest person in the world must unite with the magical creatures there to turn her luck around…
Few animated movies are as fun, wholesome, cute, charming, hilarious, and surprisingly green as Peggy Holmes’ Luck, a movie that I didn’t expect a whole lot from but ended up being one of my favorite animated projects of the year so far. It’s a lovely mixture of everything you’d want in a kids’ movie and so much more.
Screenwriter Kiel Murray doesn’t add an original idea every single turn in this movie, and that’s perfectly okay. This movie has been getting a lot of negative attention for not being a game-changing piece of animation, but I...

Okay parents, the countdown to the return of the school year is close to single-digit days. Really, hard to believe, eh? Well before you start stockpiling blender ingredients for a celebratory beverage, you’ve still got to keep them entertained in the hazy last couple of Summer weekends (naturally the temps are still soaring almost everywhere). So, that may warrant a multiplex trek for some matinee fare for them. If they’re leaning toward the animated features, then it’s almost certain they’ve caught up with the Minions (maybe more than once). And if the kiddos are very “pre-k” the PG-rated superhero slapstick of DC League Of Super-pets may be a tad overwhelming. Ah, but there is a PG alternative (very rare) opening this weekend. It’s the feature animated debut of a new “player” in the field, though a few familiar faces are behind the scenes. Like the film’s heroine,...

To celebrate the release of Apple’s latest animated movie, Luck, we had the pleasure of chatting to one of its stars Simon Pegg about the touching and hilarious new film.
From Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation comes the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world, who when she stumbles into the never-before-seen Land of Luck, sets out on a quest to bring some good luck home for her best friend. But with humans not allowed, her only chance is to team up with the magical creatures who live there to do it.
Chatting to Pegg, we talk about the lure of the story and the joys of animation; the trials, challenges, and excitement of voice acting; being in a film with legends such as Jane Fonda and Whoopi Goldberg; and, with black cats lucky in Scotland, his “return” to his Scottish voice he perfected in the Star Trek films.

Full disclosure: I don’t believe in luck, but I do believe that “Luck” — the first feature-length toon from David Ellison-backed Skydance Animation — represents a force for good in the world. It’s not easy developing both a pipeline and a project that could compete with the Disneys and DreamWorks out there. While the new studio’s debut can’t touch “Toy Story,” it’s an auspicious start for a talented group of storytellers.
After Lasseter got involved, “Luck” changed direction — and directors — picking up choreographer-turned-helmer Peggy Holmes and shifting to a plot full of cute supporting characters (lilting leprechauns! dancing bunnies!). Still, the creative team never quite cracked their promising subject, settling on a plucky but unlucky 18-year-old orphan who travels to the source of both good and bad luck — a garish Willy Wonka-esque parallel world where most of the movie takes place — in order to collect...

Sam Greenfield is the unluckiest person on Earth, and she has been since the day she was born. It’s bad enough that Sam’s biological parents left her at the Summerland Home for Girls shortly after she came into this world, and that she’s about to age out of the program after going a full 18 years without finding a forever home. But a more banal sort of calamity seems to follow Sam on a day-to-day basis, as well: This poor girl can’t make a sandwich without dropping a slice of bread on the floor jelly-side down, take a shower without knocking over a broom that locks her in the bathroom, or shoot a lip sync video with her “little sister” Hazel without the set crashing down on top of her. Rotten luck essentially follows Sam with the same Rube Goldberg-inspired relentlessness that Death stalks the teens of the “Final Destination” franchise,...

Sam Greenfield (voiced by Hadestown’s Eva Noblezada) might just be the world’s unluckiest person. The 18-year-old protagonist of Apple TV+ and Skydance Animation’s wholesome film Luck is an expert in poor timing, unhappy accidents and minor disasters. (Sometimes major ones, too). Random objects fall on her head, she slips and trips, and almost everything she touches breaks. Despite her general misfortune, Sam is a perennial optimist — a woman who prefers to look on the brighter side.
Luck tells the story of how Sam momentarily comes into better fortunes, loses that opportunity and sets out to find it again. If Apple’s extensive marketing campaign has got you doing a double take, you aren’t alone. Luck is the kind of hopeful, detailed tale Pixar would release, but this is not a product of the animation behemoth — not really. It’s the brainchild of Skydance Animation,...

The trailer for Luck follows Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world. The first trailer dropped Wednesday and shows off the animated feature, which is from Apple Original Films and is the first produced by Skydance Animation.
Everything about Sam’s (voiced by Eva Noblezada) day goes wrong until she finds a lucky penny that turns things around — until she accidentally flushes it down the toilet. She realizes the lucky penny is connected to a mysterious black cat named Bob, voiced by Simon Pegg, whom she follows into the Land of Luck, which resembles a perfectly timed Rube Goldberg machine in which everything goes right — but humans are not allowed. At the bottom of the two-sided world is where all of the bad luck is sent.

An enthusiastic crowd took a sneak peek at Skydance Animation’s first feature length film, “Luck,” showcased as part of the Annecy International Animation Festival’s Work in Progress section on Tuesday.
The panel was composed of the film’s director Peggy Holmes, screenwriter Kiel Murray, producer David Eisenmann, director of animation Yuriko Senoo and VFX supervisor Javier Romero.
“Luck” tells the story of Sam Greenfield, probably the unluckiest girl in the world, who one day finds a lucky penny.
She decides she wants to give the penny to her best friend Hazel, but her bad luck means she loses the coin. Sam sets out to find a new one and, in her quest, she crosses the path of Bob, a lucky black cat, who inadvertently leads her to the Land of Luck.
Much of the film’s comedic quality lies in the physicality of Sam’s bad luck. Senoo...
