The ancient art of bending — channeling the energy of water, earth, fire, or air and manifesting them in your hands or at your feet — is the defining characteristic of the world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” What makes Aang (Gordon Cormier) the Avatar, after all, is that he’s destined to master all of them.
From the reference videos for the original animated series onward, each of the Four Nations’ bending styles begins with the vocabulary of a real Chinese martial art from our world. But on the Netflix live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” stunt coordinator Jeff Aro leveraged some very modern tools to teach bending to the show’s young cast and find how they fight in the real world.
“We didn’t want to just tell people what to do. We wanted to teach them enough of the language that they could give us feedback, and...

One of the riskiest scenes in Netflix’s new “Avatar: The Last Airbender” adaptation has nothing to do with any of the four elements, flying a 12-year-old over the skies of the Earth Kingdom, or the nefarious schemes of the extremely hot Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). It’s a simple two-minute scene tucked in the middle of Episode 4, mostly shot-reverse shot, nothing fancy. Of course, you don’t need that many camera positions to shoot a funeral.
This funeral is a new twist and old information in the story of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — and an example of the live-action adaptation at its most successful in both deviating from and honoring its source material. The original animated version of “Avatar” had 20 episodes per season to slowly tease out its characters’ depth, even those loyal to the Fire Nation who have been trying to destroy the Avatar (hence why...

Netflix has given us more first look images of Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the most highly anticipated fantasy shows premiering in 2024.
Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, is shaping up really well. Fans have already seen the animated show foray to live-action in 2010 thanks to M. Night Shyamalan’s movie, which was panned by both fans and critics. Needless to say, there’s plenty of apprehension going into the latest remake, but so far, Netflix seems to have done the source material justice.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a world of Four Nations: Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. People from each nation possess the ability to control and manipulate (or ‘Bend’) an element. However, only one person — known as...
