- He was a detective in Scotland Yard's Art and Antiquities Unit, also known as the Art Squad. He tracked down stolen artworks by Vermeer, Goya and Titian, but his best-known feat was finding Edvard Munch's The Scream only three months after it was stolen from the National Gallery in Oslo, Norway in 1994.
- He attended Trinity College in Connecticut before dropping out in 1967 to serve as a paratrooper in Vietnam.
