A strange thing happens to me at the end of each year. Tasked with compiling a list of cultural favorites, I find myself drawing a blank. It’s as if I haven’t spent the past 365 days watching films, binging various TV shows, listening to albums or attending theater productions to prepare for this very moment.
On the heel of a deadline, I usually fire off some texts to friends — some desperate, all pleading. Is there anything you’ve watched this year that deserves more attention, I ask. What’s the best song you’ve heard? The best movie you watched? The best series?
Other than outsourcing a bit of my job, the questions end up being a good exercise in perspective. They reorient my attitude toward the compilation process. I begin to recognize the importance of reflecting, even casually, on a year’s worth of culture. I get excited about what’s to come,...

Standing In The kitchen at a house party in Rome not long ago, Caroline Polachek heard a song that struck her deeply. “Ti Sento” (“I Hear You”), the 1985 single by Italian pop group Matia Bazar, is peak Eighties Europop kitsch: sparkling synth-pop paired with big, operatic vocals.
Polachek thinks a lot about divas (she loves Celine Dion for “how she exists as an icon, and how pure and comforting and solid that is”), and the performance by Matia Bazar’s singer, Antonella Ruggiero, became a major touchstone for her. “She’s just giving everything,...

While queer musicians have always been around, representation often comes in the way of gay, lesbian or bisexual artists. Unfortunately, transgender artists have been especially underrepresented. These days trans, nonbinary, or non-gender-conforming artists like Sam Smith, Arca, Janelle Monáe, Kim Petras, and Big Freedia have been able to create space for transgender artists. However, back in the 1960s, one artist was already pushing music forward. Let’s look back at Wendy Carlos, her monumental record “Switched-On Bach,” and how it helped both her and the trans community along the way — while also winning three Grammys.
