Tony Awards host Ariana DeBose shone a spotlight on the swings and understudies of the Broadway season Sunday, praising their critical role in keeping productions going while the industry grappled with Covid-19.
“I want to give a round of applause to some people who played a vital role in keeping Broadway shows open these past few months—the understudies, the swings and the standbys,” DeBose said. “And let’s not forget the stage managers and the associates and the dance captains who rehearsed them to go on in a moment’s notice.”
As the omicron wave hit Broadway casts in December and January — and as Covid cases continue to impact Broadway shows — understudies and swings (actors who can go on for multiple parts) have frequently filled in for sick cast members in order to keep the shows running.

The 2022 Outer Critics Circle nominations were announced Tuesday. They honor the best of the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. “The Lehman Trilogy” scored the most nominations with nine bids, followed closely by the Off-Broadway musicals “Harmony” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” which scored eight nominations apiece.
Special Achievement Awards will be presented to “How I Learned to Drive” stars Johanna Day, David Morse and Mary-Louise Parker, as well as “Lackawanna Blues” star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, to mark their outstanding returns to roles they originated two decades ago. Since these actors were eligible for the original runs of these shows, the Outer Critics Circle has opted to take them out of contention for this year’s awards.

Exclusive: Bron Studios has snapped up rights to The Selfless Act of Breathing, the newly released novel by JJ Bola, to develop into a feature-length film.
Playwright Keenan Scott II (Broadway’s Thoughts of a Colored Man) will adapt for the screen.
The Selfless Act of Breathing follows Michael Kabongo, a British-Congolese teacher living in London on the cusp of two identities. On paper, he seems to have it all: He’s beloved by his students, popular with his co-workers, and the pride and joy of a mother who emigrated from the Congo to the UK in search of a better life. But behind closed doors, he’s been struggling with the overwhelming sense that he can’t address the injustices he sees raging before him – from his relentless efforts to change the lives of his students for the better to his attempts to transcend the violence and brutality that...

With the recent Broadway cancellations and Omicron knocking New York City for a holiday loop, it’s easy to forget that Broadway’s fall season was, artistically speaking, stellar, with a slate of excellent new shows opening, some fine holdovers from pre-shutdown days returning and significant strides made in the representation of Black theater artists.
So as a reminder of better times, and with hope for a post-Omicron return to full vigor, here’s my list of the 10 Best New Broadway Shows of 2021.
The Lehman Trilogy Sam Mendes’ production of the Stefano Masinni play, adapted by Ben Power, is an astonishing amalgam of history and stage magic, chronicling the true and unlikely tale of how a trio of immigrant brothers became a founding force in the American economy and an integral part of our national story. Updated: Waitress, the Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, has canceled its remaining performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, producers announced tonight. The decision was made after new cases of Covid were detected among the company and crew. The production was to have run through January 9.
Likewise, producers of the groundbreaking Thoughts of a Colored Man at the Golden Theatre announced that the December 22 performance of the show was its last. When Thoughts of a Colored Man opened in October, it made history as the first Broadway show to be written, directed by, starring and lead-produced by Black men. Like others, the Keenan Scott II play, directed by Steven H. Broadnax III, tried to navigate the rising Covid crisis in New York to no avail.

Waitress producers tweeted late yesterday afternoon that the Dec. 21 and 22 performances were canceled “out of an abundance of caution.” The news did not come a surprise to some: Calling into Stars in the House Monday night, Waitress star Ciara Renée said she had chosen not to participate in that evening’s performance of her show due to breakthrough Covid cases within the production.
Out of an abundance of caution, the December 21st and 22nd performances of Waitress on Broadway has been cancelled. The show is expected to resume on Thursday, December 23rd at 7pm. Ticket holders for tonight’s performance will be contacted by their point of purchase.

As Hollywood events return to full force in New York and Los Angeles amid the coronavirus pandemic, here’s a look at the week’s biggest premieres, parties and openings, including red carpets for And Just Like That, Don’t Look Up, Being the Ricardos, West Side Story and A Journal for Jordan.

Adam McKay premiered his end of the world comedy Don’t Look Up in New York City on Sunday, where he was joined by stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Himesh Patel and Kid Cudi. “This is now,” writer-director McKay told The Hollywood Reporter of tackling the climate crisis with the film. “Right this second, the livable atmosphere is collapsing. We’re literally living in the movie. And if we don’t take immediate action, billions of people are going to die and we’re going to see this civilization collapse.

The sextet of queens of Six and each of the three Lehman Brothers – or rather the performers in the Broadway roles – may compete in the Tony Awards’ lead acting categories this year, Tony administrators announced today.
The decision to consider the individual members of those ensemble casts was among the first set of eligibility rulings made for the 2021-2022 season. The Tony Awards Administration Committee met yesterday in the first of the several eligibility meetings the group will have before the end of the season next spring.
This round of decisions mostly addresses acting category decisions, determining whether various cast members of often large ensembles fall into the lead slots.
A decision was also made on Trouble in Mind, the Alice Childress play originally staged Off Broadway in 1955 that had never been produced on Broadway until this season. As it did several seasons ago with Mart Crowley’s 1968 play The Boys in the Band,...

Back in February, the new play “Thoughts of a Colored Man” installed its marquee at the Golden Theatre, an encouraging sign almost a year into the coronavirus pandemic that the frost on Broadway was about to thaw. Keenan Scott II’s allegorical drama has finally arrived, debuting at the Golden on Oct. 13 under the direction of Steve H. Broadnax III.

This Broadway season, as stop and start as it has been, has been blessed with some truly stellar moments – and spotted with blessedly fewer disappointments. The vibrant Pass Over was an ideal curtain raiser for an industry waking up. Lackawanna Blues felt like a tonic, and Is This A Room is as wrenching a work of art as any with roots in the Trump era to date.
And as worthy of applause as those productions were and are, all feel a bit like preamble to Keenan Scott II’s remarkable Thoughts of a Colored Man opens, the first fully realized reflection of the shutdown era. A play of immense compassion and keen insight, with a vise-grip on the dreams and disappointments of its characters, Thoughts of a Colored Man is a paean to life as both survival and celebration, a tribute and exploration of the Black men who find beauty,...

Thoughts of a Colored Man is the kind of play for which I make excuses. The Broadway production of Keenan Scott II’s new work is a study of Black masculinity and “blends spoken word, slam poetry, rhythm and humor” to tell the stories of a group of Black men living in Brooklyn. Based on this description alone, it sounds like the kind of project — experimental in structure, bold in vision, and written and directed by Black people — that I want to succeed in the glaringly white world of theater.
