In 2021, Mdou Moctar told Rolling Stone, “My music is going to become more inspired by revolution.” That promise was truth in advertising. For more than a decade, the Tuareg guitarist/singer-songwriter, who fronts the band that shares his name, has been staking out a space as a radical guitar innovator as well as a fearless spokesman for his strife-riven homeland of Niger. As he asks in Tuareg on the opening track on his band’s excellent new LP, Funeral for Justice, “Dear African leaders, hear my burning question/Why does...

Mdou Moctar have dropped a scorching new plea, “Imouhar,” off the Nigerien band’s upcoming album, Funeral for Justice, out May 3 via Matador.
“Imouhar” begins with a shaggy, lo-fi groove but quickly launches into the kind of propulsive, head-spinning desert blues Mdou Moctar’s best known for, replete — of course — with plenty of insane guitar pyrotechnics. In the lyrics, Moctar encourages the Tuareg people to not let their Tamasheq language become obsolete.
“People here are just using French,” the frontman said in a statement. “They’re starting to forget their own language.

Nigerien and Tuareg musician Mdou Moctar has shared “Imouhar,” the latest single off Moctar’s forthcoming album Funeral for Justice.
With kaleidoscopic guitar work, soaring vocals, and rapid-fire drumming, Mdou Moctar and his band build to a scorching, satisfying crescendo in “Imouhar.” The word “Imouhar” for the Tuareg means “brother” or “comrade;” as Mdou says in a statement, it’s a way of establishing common unity within the Tuareg people.

The anti-colonialist song calls for the preservation of Tamasheq language, which is quickly dying out: “People here are just using French,” Moctar says. “They’re starting to forget their own language. We feel like in a hundred years no one will speak good Tamasheq, and that’s so scary for us.” In his native Tamasheq, Moctar spells out his concerns throughout “Imouhar,” at one point singing, “Waking up one day our kids can’t speak...

Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar and his band are back with a new song, “Funeral for Justice,” the opener and title track for his next album, out May 3 via Matador Records.
The scorching new track is stuffed with dizzying riffs that always seem to lead to downbeat punches. The lyrics embody the strong political and anti-colonial themes across the album, with Moctar addressing Africa’s leaders directly at one point (via translation): “Retake control of your countries, rich in resources / Build them and quit sleeping.”

Visionary Nigerian rock act Mdou Moctar are back with new music. The band confirmed that their next album, titled Funeral for Justice, will arrive on May 3rd via Matador Records. They’ve previewed the title track today alongside the news — stream it below.
In “Funeral For Justice,” the group turns up the volume — while the quartet’s breakout project, Afrique Victim, emphasized their preference for heavy guitar solos, this track kicks off an even louder era. Feedback-laden solos weave around the sharp, pointed lyrics, which the band members describe as “passionately political.”
Funeral for Justice was recorded shortly before Niger’s democratically elected government was deposed in a military coup. “With Funeral for Justice, I really wanted this to shine with the political message because of everything that’s going on,” the group’s frontman and namesake said in a statement. “As the band got tighter and heavier live, it...

Mdou Moctar, the acclaimed Tuareg guitarist, has launched a GoFundMe to help him and his bandmates stay in the United States since military officers in his home country of Niger overthrew its leadership in a coup d’état last month.
Moctar, whose full name is Mahamadou Souleymane, and his Nigerien bandmates — Ahmoudou Madassane and Souleymane Ibrahim — had been touring the States at the time of the coup.
“At present, the band is stuck in the United States indefinitely,” one of the band’s managers, Dan Oestreich, wrote on the fundraiser’s page.

We live in a seemingly never-ending age of music documentaries. In the last decade, everyone from Billie Eilish to Linda Ronstadt to A Band Called Death has had their story chronicled on film. This year alone has seen pictures about David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, Sinéad O'Connor, Olivia Rodrigo, Dio, Sheryl Crow, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Nick Cave, and the New York City music scene of the early 2000s. I wouldn't be surprised if there are films I'm forgetting there. Frank Marshall and Ryan Suffern, the co-directors of "Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story," have even made documentaries about The Bee Gees and the collaboration between Carole King and James Taylor, both of which have been released within the last two years. Music documentaries are inescapable.
What makes this overwhelming saturation even more depressing is how uninterested these films are at digging deep into their subjects. Most of the films...

Mdou Moctar unleashes a mighty solo on his new song, “Nakanegh Dich,” an upbeat outtake from last year’s celebrated album, Afrique Victime.
“This is Mdou’s very first time using a wah pedal,” bassist and producer, Mikey Coltun, said in a statement. “At some point, Mdou called Rob [Schnapf, co-producer] into the studio and asked him to control the wah with his foot while Mdou shredded a solo.” The result is a trippy yet intricately played psychedelic ripper.
“Nakanegh Dich” will feature on an upcoming expanded edition of Afrique Victime, due out digitally on Thursday,...

Parquet Courts have released the video for their Sympathy for Life track, “Marathon of Anger,” the first in a series of clips set to drop in the lead up to the wide release of their film project, Sympathy for Life, Visualized.
The “Marathon of Anger” clip was directed by Mara Palena, who complements the Talking Heads-esque protest anthem with an abstract collage that flits between city skylines, dance parties, moving portraits, and natural landscapes.
Following “Marathon of Anger,” Parquet Courts will release a new music video each day up until Sympathy for Life,...

Mdou Moctar has previously claimed, “I don’t know what rock is exactly,” and that’s a good thing listening to the Niger-based Tuareg singer-songwriter’s latest album, Afrique Victime. There’s a unique sense of freedom in the record’s eight songs that most household-name rockers will never understand, since North American and European musicians have been inundated with the rigid strictures of verse-chorus-bridge songwriters since birth. And that’s not to say that Moctar grew up on Mars — he has declared himself a fan of Eddie Van Halen...

Mdou Moctar was halfway around the world, in the middle of a lengthy tour in 2019, when his partner gave birth. The Tuareg guitarist, who hails from the Saharan desert City of Agadez in central Niger and is the latest in a growling line of tishoumaren (loosely translated to “desert blues”) musicians to find a receptive audience abroad, was already missing his hometown — “the vibrations of my environment,” as he put it in a recent interview with Rolling Stone (with the help of a translator). And now his partner, Layla, “was calling out for me,...

Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar has released a new track, “Taliat,” from his upcoming album, Afrique Victime, out May 21st via Matador.
“Taliat” is centered around Moctar’s billowing guitar lines, which twist around steady percussion as the musician sings about love and heartbreak in Tamasheq. In a statement, Moctar said, “‘Taliat’ means woman. In our community, women are queens, they have a lot of power, that’s why I use the term taliat to talk about them. A woman in the Tuareg community has to be protected, but she also...

Dawn Richard, Second Line
R&b artist Dawn Richard has taken a winding path through her nearly 20-year career. Now, she finds herself on the North Carolina indie-rock label Merge with her sixth LP, Second Line. It may be an unexpected place for her, but the record feels like a culmination of all her experience, suffused into an album that threads decades of music and heritage into a thrilling, organic whole. the decision by Richard to anchor much of Second Line in house and other forms of electronic club music...

There’s a certain kind of lyric that Will Oldham excels at writing and delivering, where he sketches out a vaguely unnerving scenario and allows it to hang there in the listener’s mind, offering no assurance whatsoever that everything will turn out Ok. A potent example comes on “Not Fooling,” the final track of Superwolves, the singer-songwriter’s rich, surprising, and deeply fulfilling new collaborative album with guitarist and co-writer Matt Sweeney, and a sequel to the pair’s 2005 collection Superwolf. “All your assumptions/Are righteous nightmares,” he sings,...

In the early 2000s, Will Oldham and guitarist Matt Sweeney decided to try a collaborative experiment inspired by the working relationship of Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter.
Oldham — who went by Bonnie “Prince” Billy at the time — would write lyrics from his home in Louisville, Kentucky, and then send them to Sweeney, the guitarist who had played in the innovative New York rock band Chavez and Billy Corgan’s Zwan. The result was 2005’s Superwolf. The follow-up to that record, Superwolves, will be released by Drag City on April...

Reading a Bonnaroo lineup is like slowly strolling through and all the way down the looking glass — the familiar big-name headliners giving way to a mix of special performances and a broad array of up-and-comers from across the globe and musical spectrum.
The 2020 lineup is no different: Lizzo, Tame Impala, Tool, Miley Cyrus, Bassnectar, Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, DaBaby and Young Thug are among the artists who got top billing this year, while the biggest “surprise” headliner award may go to Oysterhead, the jam supergroup of Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland,...

What does it take to reboot a classic '80s film? You can follow in the footsteps of Creed and Fury Road and give the original formula a modern remix — or you can simply port the story over to West Africa and go from there. That's the thinking behind Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, a Purple Rain remake that brings the story of Prince's semi-autobiographical 1984 film to Niger, with the country's rollicking guitar scene standing in for the original's Minneapolis R&B. (According to NPR, the title translates to "rain the color of blue with a little red in it" as the Tuareg language has no word for purple.) Directed by American ethnomusicologist and label executive Christopher Kirkley, the film stars Tuareg musician Mdou Moctar in the Prince role, and was funded partly through the help of Kickstarter donations; it's currently touring film festivals in America and Europe. Despite the...
