Anime grows more popular with each passing year, yet an endless debate in the community still argues the merits of “subs vs. dubs.” Among some, dubbed anime continues to be viewed as a concession or a way to lure mainstream international audiences into the Japanese medium. It’s always a good idea to experience something in its original language, but dubbing has also proven itself to be its own artform that has the power to complement and improve upon the original series.
Certain anime dubs, such as Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and My Hero Academia, have won over fans and are viewed as equals to their original subtitled versions. However, the anime dubbing industry has made tremendous strides over the past decade and Attack on Titan has become the crowning achievement of what’s possible when inspired dubbing meets groundbreaking storytelling. Your favorite foul-mouthed bear is back — this time in a TV series. A Peacock prequel series to the hit movie franchise of a similar, yet differently capitalized, name premieres on Thursday, Jan. 11. This new show from the mind of Seth MacFarlane, simply called “ted,” takes place in 1993, where Ted the Bear — his 15 minutes of fame now behind him — is living at home with his best-friend, 16-year-old John Bennett. You can guess what kind of hijinks they’ll get up to, but at the end of the day, Ted is still the loyal (and hilariously vulgar) friend that we’ve always known him to be. You can watch ted with a subscription to Peacock.

A Wheel of Fortune contestant blew her chance to win a brand new BMW – and sparked a sassy reaction from Pat Sajak. Ashley McFarland appeared on Tuesday’s (January 9) episode of the show and was visibly anxious during her Bonus Round. “Let’s see what this does for you,” Sajak said to Ashley while the letters began appearing on the board. As he noticed her nerves, Sajak told her, “It’s too early to panic.” When she selected letters for the three-word puzzle, Sajak humorously added to her nerves, saying, “Now you can panic.” Ashley incorrectly guessed “Braising the aisles” and “Grazing the aisles” missing the correct answer, “Browsing The Aisles.” To her dismay, she lost out on the big prize of a brand new BMW. And she soon found that Sajak was in no mood to make her feel better about herself. “You don’t graze ’em, you don’t braise ’em,...

ESPN’s “Toy Story”-themed alternative live stream of Sunday’s Jaguars-Falcons game was incredibly ambitious, and it showed early on in the form of technical issues.
The stream was available on both Disney+ and ESPN+. That is, if you could get in. I was able to log in on my second or third try after fully restarting my TV; a colleague gave up after five minutes of continuous trying. Those who joined halfway (or more) through the first quarter probably had the best viewer experience.
Ball-tracking was the first noticeable challenge and the most consistent issue throughout the game. At times, the football would just appear on random spots of the carpet (field) or slide around the playing surface on its own. Sometimes The Claw, playing the role of umpire in Andy’s room, never even spotted the ball at the line of scrimmage.

Pack your water bottles, because a second Fyre Festival seems to be in the works. On Aug. 20, Billy McFarland, the organizer behind the original failed event, revealed that tickets for a second installment of the festival were on sale for $499 apiece in an Instagram video. He also said the event was scheduled for December 2024.
Just two days later, McFarland claimed that the festival had sold out entirely. However, event's website claims more tickets are "coming soon," though they'll cost between $799 and $7,999 each.
Not many details or specifics about the second Fyre Festival are available, and the website merely says that the festival will take place somewhere in "The Caribbean." Meanwhile, in 2022, the Bahamas Tourism Industry said it would "not endorse or approve any event" on the islands "associated with" McFarland, per NBC.
Speculation about a second Fyre Festival began to swirl when McFarland shared a series of cryptic tweets on April 9 teasing a follow-up.

Despite having no announced lineup, location, or date, the initial allotment of tickets for Fyre Fest 2.0 has sold out, according to founder and convicted fraudster Billy McFarland.
“The First 100” tier of tickets went on sale Sunday for the price of $499. “They sold out very very quickly,” McFarland claimed in an interview with TMZ.
McFarland previously said that Fyre Fest 2.0 would take place in the Caribbean sometime at the end of 2024. The remaining festival tickets will go on sale at a future date, with some premium levels priced for as high as $7,999.
In 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to multiple counts of wire fraud in connection to Fyre Fest 1.0, admitting that he defrauded investors over the festival’s financial status and provided falsified documents to secure funding. He ended up serving four years in prison and was ordered to pay restitution of $26 million to the defrauded investors.

Billy McFarland is giving the Fyre Festival concept a second shot and made an announcement about ticket sales going on sale.
Fyre Festival II has no specific location set yet but it’s supposed to take place by the end of 2024 in the Caribbean. Per the festival’s website, ticket prices start at $499 and go up to $7,999.
“This is a big day because as of right now, Fyre Festival II tickets are officially on sale,” McFarland says in a video he posted on YouTube. “It has been the absolute wildest journey to get here and it really all started during the seventh-month stint in solitary confinement. I wrote out this 50-page plan of how would take this overall interest and demand and fire and how would take my ability to bring people from around the world together to make the impossible happen.”

Years after the disastrous 2017 Fyre Festival, Billy McFarland has announced that Fyre Festival II is in the works.
McFarland said in a video posted on social media Sunday that after speaking with “people as far away as the Middle East and South America” to host the festival, he ultimately decided that the festival would be “coming back to the Caribbean” with a target date at the end of 2024. Specific locations, dates and festival lineup have yet to be revealed.

Two Friends Edm music duo Eli Sones and Matthew Halper recently revealed that Fyre Festival promoter, Billy McFarland contacted them about performing at a future Fyre Festival.
McFarland’s 2018 Fyre Festival infamously became known as the dumpster fire of music events when McFarland promised hundreds of concert-goers the luxury music festival of a lifetime – and it turned out to be a total con. McFarland ultimately pleaded guilty to defrauding investors, was fined $39 million, and served four years in prison.
Since his release, he’s promised to do Fyre Festival the right way. However, finding strong acts may be pretty tough.

McFarland hinted in the press that Fyre Festival 2.0 could be in the works and Two Friends confirmed that the disgraced promoter contacted them.
“Funny enough, I would say probably not,” Sones told Showbiz Cheat Sheet about the possibility of playing Fyre. “But he actually did.

The Television Critics Association has officially canceled its 2023 summer tour. In an email to members, the TCA board cited the ongoing WGA strike as the reason for its cancelation.

The Board will move forward with plans for our January tour, and we look forward to gathering with you all in the Los Angeles area then!”

Disgraced Fyre Fest founder Billy McFarland says he has secured funding to stage to a “2.0 version” of the festival, as well as a companion Broadway musical.
McFarland made the announcement via his TikTok, as well as in an interview with NYC street journalist Adam Glyn (see below). In the latter clip, he spoke while standing outside of a bar with venture capitalist John Cerasani, who appears to be backing McFarland’s ventures.
The musical, which will apparently preempt the festival, is dubbed “Fyre Fest 1.5” As McFarland explained, “Instead of like traditional Broadway actors, it’s going to be current music artists, combined with the Broadway format of the play — making fun of me, but also I think sharing some of the good sides as well.”
“That’s going to lead to the Island, McFarland continued, where he will attempt to stage a second version of Fyre Fest.

It’s Sunday afternoon, and the sun is slowly coming out on New York City’s Orchard Street. Patches of the street are covered in soapy water and last night’s party detritus — cups, cigarettes, and ripped wristbands dot the sidewalks. Dogs pull their owners down the street, last night’s revelers clutch coffees and sandwiches like lifelines, and a few marathoners head home, wrapped in foil blankets. In fact, there are people everywhere — everywhere except 7th Street Burger, that is, where inside, Billy McFarland is sweating behind a grill,...

Ja Rule has distanced himself from a follow-up to Fyre Festival, after Billy McFarland, the creator behind the disastrous event, teased its possible return.
In 2017, McFarland was at the centre of a scandal in which ticket holders were lured to a “luxury music festival” held on Pablo Escobar’s former private island in the Bahamas, with Migos and Blink-182 booked to perform.
The event, which Rule co-founded, was a catastrophe. “Deluxe housing” actually turned out to be disaster-relief tents, and attendees were served soggy cheese sandwiches. Many of the musical acts didn’t turn up, and ticketholders were left stranded on the island.
In 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, was sentenced to six years in prison – but was released early in March 2022 – and ordered to pay back £23m to festival investors. The entire scandal around the festival was the subject of two documentaries, including one by Netflix.

Spoilers for "Attack on Titan" follow.
If you watch anime dubs, you'll notice a lot of the same voices coming out of different characters' mouths across many different series. That's because many series are dubbed by the same studios, which employ the same stable of actors. One of the biggest dubbing studios is Funimation. Founded in 1994 by since-retired Gen Fukunaga and based in the Dallas, Texas metro area, the studio rose to fame by dubbing "Dragon Ball Z." The company has since been merged with and rebranded as Crunchyroll, but the talent remains largely the same.
Some voice actors you might hear over and over in Funimation/Crunchyroll dubs include Chris Sabat, Colleen Clinkenbeard, and Mike McFarland. The latter is a particularly important lynchpin of the studio since he's not just a voice actor, but also an Adr director, writer, and line producer.

Will Smith was supposed to be the most controversial element of Emancipation, Apple TV+’s big-budget epic from director Antoine Fuqua chronicling an enslaved man’s bid for freedom in 1860s Louisiana. Apple TV+ raised eyebrows by choosing to release its record-breaking acquisition — the streamer paid a reported 105 million for the drama during Cannes’ virtual market in 2020 — in early December, just nine months after Smith infamously slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars (and Smith’s subsequent 10-year ban from the ceremony).
With all eyes on whether the film could help rehabilitate Smith’s image after the incident, Emancipation producer Joey McFarland managed to deflect some of the attention away from the film’s lead star at a red carpet premiere in November, when he proudly brandished what he claimed to be the original print of the haunting photo that inspired the movie.

When a shonen is titled "Chainsaw Man," it's expected of the anime to be as violent and visceral as it ended up being. Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga of the same name, "Chainsaw Man" debuted in the fall anime season to rave reviews, with /Film's own Rafael Motamayor calling it "irreverent, hilarious, and full of exciting and rather gory action." Equal parts hilarious and darkly brutal, the anime translated the striking visuals and concepts of the manga to a stunning level of detail. The English dub cast that brings the characters to life helped to shed new light on the fights in the anime, giving them a crueler, edgier feel when compared to reading them on a page.
As is typical of most Shonen, fight scenes more often than not lead to a large amount of screaming to demonstrate the force of willpower. For "Chainsaw Man," the insanity of...

Universal’s upcoming “Super Mario Bros” super-jumped to the top of Variety’s Trending Movies chart, presented by Samsung, for the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, earning more than 132,000 engagements on Twitter.
The film hits theaters on April 7 next year, but has been stirring up controversy and excitement online for months, mainly for the nostalgic play but also because Chris Pratt voices the title character — a casting that hasn’t sat well with everyone in the industry.
This past week the film took over Twitter conversations thanks to the second trailer drop on Nov. 29, which introduced Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The main topic of conversation, though, continued to be whether Pratt was the right choice to voice Mario, a debate only fueled by how few words the character has said over the first two trailer drops to date.

Joey McFarland, a producer of the film Emancipation, has apologised after showing a real photo of an enslaved man at the red carpet premiere.
In the Antoine Fuqua-directed historical film, Will Smith plays a man named Peter, who battles through the wild terrain of Louisiana to escape enslavement.
Smith’s character was inspired by a memorable photo of an enslaved man commonly called “Whipped Peter”, which shows his back marked with keloid scars having suffered brutal whippings from enslavers.
At the premiere event for Emancipation last week, McFarland showed the original 1863 photograph of Whipped Peter to the press, telling Variety: “I wanted a piece of Peter to be here tonight.”
However, this action drew criticism from commenters online, who were confused about the producer’s intentions.
In a post to social media on Sunday (4 December), McFarland issued an apology, explaining that he’d meant to honour the man.

And so for the last couple of decades I have been seeking out and acquiring as many forgotten and lost photos as possible,” McFarland told The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday. The one that has impacted him the most, he said, is the photograph known as The Scourged Back.

Penske Media Corp. has acquired Atx TV, the entity that operates the annual television festival in Austin, Tex.
The deal calls for Pmc, which is the parent company of Variety, to help expand the scope of the Atx brand with programming and activities beyond the four-day event in June that has become a key stop on the industry’s promotional calendar.
The Atx TV festival is heading into its 12th edition next year, set to run June 1-4. The company was founded by TV enthusiasts Emily Gipson and Caitlin McFarland, who put themselves on the map in a short time by smartly programming a mix of nostalgic reunions, lively table reads plus a mix of buzzy premieres and industry-centric panels. Atx has become a high-visibility event for TV promotional events, but it’s still managed to maintain a low-key atmosphere for creative talent that appeals to Hollywood insiders. In 2017, Gipson...

It’s easy to forget that in his early 2000s heyday, Ja Rule had a case to be considered the biggest hip-hop artist in the world.
Following back-to-back chart-topping albums with Rule 3:36 in 2000 and the massive Pain Is Love in 2001, Ja was on constant rotation on the radio and on MTV and in constant demand for featured guest spots. The 46-year-old isn’t troubling the charts with as much frequency today, but the rapper and entrepreneur has maintained a level of cultural relevance through recent television projects, his sprawling business empire and his growing presence in the music streaming space.
Nostalgia for the hip-hop of Ja’s golden era has kept him touring but also informed the rapper’s Vibes Concert Series, where legendary MCs perform their most classic albums in an intimate setting. On Nov. 21, New York rapper Rakim will be...

The latest documentary about Billy McFarland — whose disastrous Fyre Festival ended in a felony conviction — is moving forward despite a threat from the Bahamian government.
Ample Entertainment is producing the doc, After the Fyre, which also hails from Fremantle. The project, at the time of announcement, was described as following McFarland as he returns to the Bahamas for his post-prison business venture, a treasure hunt, in an attempt at restitution of the 26 million dollars he owes to Fyre investors and attendees, among other parties.
In late October, McFarland began posting about the treasure hunt, known as Pyrt, on his social media channels. But a letter this week from the Bahamian office of tourism, which is essentially barring McFarland from travel to the country, said that McFarland is considered to be “fugitive” with standing complaints at the Royal Bahamas Police Force. “Anyone knowing of...
