- 2005 Nobel Prize Winner for Chemistry.
- He did farm work throughout his youth, and attended the University of Florida planning to study agricultural sciences. While working on a summer project in which he analyzed steer feces, he was asked to help a friend in an organic chemistry laboratory, which led to him changing his major. He received bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from Florida, and a doctorate in chemistry from Columbia University.
- He was Nobel co-laureate with Yves Chauvin of France and Richard R. Schrock of MIT.
- He joined the faculty at Michigan State University, where he began research in metathesis. He had several fellowships, including one to study at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, before moving to Caltech.
- He was a faculty member at Caltech for over 40 years.
