Hot off the heels of his recent Mad Ep, Mat Zo is back to offer up a fresh remix of Porter Robinson and Madeon‘s smash collaboration “Shelter.” The producer had first unveiled his version of the tune last month during a live show, and fans were excited by the prospect of an official release. Now, it’s finally here and the results are nothing short of stunning.
Remixing Porter Robinson’s material is no small task, especially with an instant classic like “Shelter.” Unsurprisingly though, Mat Zo proves he’s up to the task as he offers up a unique rework. His remix opens with tropical tinged hand percussion loops, breezy guitar strums and pastoral synths. From there, the catchy vocal track from “Shelter” enters the mix and that’s where things really take off. Moving past the first verse, Zo picks up the energy with crashing rhythms and rolling synths,...

Back in August, Porter Robinson and Madeon took the internet by surprise with the release of their collaborative single “Shelter,” a dreamy dance pop tune that inspired their tour of the same name. Following up on the release of his latest Ep Mad, Mat Zo is resurfacing to offer up his own version of “Shelter.” The DJ dropped his remix during a recent gig in San Diego and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results.
We haven’t seen too many producers taking on “Shelter” yet, and we’re glad to see Mat Zo step up to the plate for a remix. His version opens with some surprising tropical elements, as breezy pads, strummed guitar notes and hand percussion loops kick things off. The song’s vocals then enter the mix, as Zo works in four on the floor rhythms and echoed melodies. Things then take an unexpected...

Mat Zo has made a name for himself as one of dance music’s more forward thinking producers, carrying on a long tradition of boundary pushing electronic musicians hailing from the UK. His debut album, Damage Control topped the iTunes dance chart upon release in 2013, while showing off a penchant for sonic exploration and experimental leanings that define his career to this day.
After releasing his sophomore album Self Assemble earlier in the year to wide acclaim, Zo resurfaced this month to offer up a new three track Ep dubbed Mad, which sees the genre defying producer exploring darker terrain while injecting a notable drum and bass influence into the short collection of tunes.
Recently, we were lucky enough to catch up with Mat Zo for a quick interview before his show at the second stop of the Mad tour. His online persona has garnered an outspoken, in your face reputation on social media,...

Mat Zo has returned over the weekend to deliver his new Mad Ep, serving as the follow up to his recently released sophomore album Self Assemble. Alongside the release of the new Ep, Zo has revealed a string of upcoming performances for an accompanying tour of the same name.
The three track Mad Ep sees Zo exploring a wide range of sonic terrain. The new release opens quietly with a music box passage on “Troglodyte,” creating a suspenseful introduction as ominous string build in intensity with a classical tinged chord progression. The track then moves forward into an electronic section with blippy synth arpeggios, filtered basslines and half time beats.
Up next is a collaboration with Foreign Beggars on “Take It Back,” featuring a spastic drum and bass production with rapid fire breakbeats and stuttered vocal samples. The Ep culminates with the title track “Mad,” another dnb tune with skittering breaks,...

Deadmau5’s label has returned over the weekend to drop the seventh episode of the Mau5trap Presents mix series on Beats 1 radio. The Mau5 leader himself opens the two hour mix with an introduction before delving into his recent track “Imaginary Friends.”
The first hour of the mix features a number of heavy hitters, from Rezz’s recent Kill The Noise remix to a Matt Lange remix of Mat Zo’s “Too Late,” while Eric Prydz’ lesser known alter ego Cirez D makes an appearance as well. The second half of the set sports a number of techno cuts from the episode’s guests Pig&Dan, before a remix of Dubfire & Oliver Huntemann’s “Fuego” closes out the mix.

After word broke of musical prodigy Prince’s untimely death last week, the electronic music community saw a relatively small influx of Prince remixes when measured against the backlash from those who would denounce the producers releasing them as opportunists. By what it looks like, though, Mat Zo‘s new track, “Natural,” cannot be lumped into that category.
According to the DJ, he wrote “Natural” a year ago “as a sort of homage to Prince,” which dispels any notion that he sought to benefit from the artist’s passing after the fact. While it’s by no means a departure from Mat Zo’s trademark sound, the electro funk-infused arrangement certainly exhibits many of the hallmarks of Prince’s music as well.
It’s been but a few days since Prince was found deceased, though, so Mat Zo‘s “Natural” might soon be accompanied by lots of other music inspired by the artist’s career.

Festival season is only just now kicking off, but those who attended either of the Holy Ship! sailings in the early months of the year got to see some of electronic music’s biggest names perform in a similar setting. In particular, Porter Robinson performed a memorable set – and one SoundCloud user found a recording and uploaded it to their account.
The user, whose display name is “St3ve_Oh,” appears to have uncovered an Electric Area broadcast of Robinson’s performance. Placid dreamscapes like Purity Ring’s “Begin Again” meet with incendiary bass drops from tracks like GTA’s “Red Lips,” making for the cerebral sort of aural journey you would expect from such a celebrated DJ.
Porter Robinson has gone light on releases in recent months, but with festival season nearly upon us that will likely change soon. In the meantime, listen to his Holy Ship! 2016 set and...

One way or another, Mat Zo has resigned himself to controversy. The British DJ/producer has managed to emerge from last year’s Twitter tirade with his music career intact – but the music video he’s offered up for his collaboration with vocalist I See Monstas, “Sinful,” is subversive for entirely different reasons.
Suggestive shots of a futuristic strip club curiously compliment the upbeat nu disco flair of “Sinful.” Exotic dancers twist sensually to the delight of onlooking businessmen – some of whom wear masks whose role in this somewhat dystopian timeline remains tastefully ambiguous.
Following last month’s “Soul Food,” “Sinful” is the second track from Mat Zo’s upcoming album, Self Assemble. If these two singles are any indicator of what’s to come, then the album will be defined by a more instrumental, funk-based style.

Mat Zo may have disappointed some fans when he broke news of the delays to the release of his sophomore album, but now Self Assemble is on track for a new release date. In a tweet, the British DJ/producer revealed that the follow-up to his 2013 album Damage Control will arrive on March 25th.
In addition, as a consolation for fans he’s released a track from the album titled “Soul Food” ahead of its release. The track’s soft, disco-tinged groove incorporates subtle elements of electro house in a way that doesn’t encroach on the soulfulness of the melody.
Mat Zo‘s Self Assemble was originally supposed to come out in February, but now it will be available on March 25th. Listen to “Soul Food” to tide your cravings over in the meantime, and let us know what you think of the track by sounding off in the comments section.
