Aviation engineer credited with saving thousands of lives with his invention of the ground proximity warning system to alert pilots to potential deadly obstacles in their path.
He studied electrical engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, and worked at Boeing for two years before joining United Control, which eventually merged into Honeywell.
