In this intense short film, a grieving rideshare driver picks up a passenger who helps him confront the past.
The film is directed by Misan Harriman and, stars David Oyelowo, Jessica Plummer and Amelie Dokubo.
An interesting short that proves it does not require to be feature length to tell a full story. In its approximately 19 minutes running time, it manages to bring into the arena, besides the protagonist, the grieving Dayo, a number of characters who are presented to us as his passengers. Capturing short scenes of their rides in his car, and providing telling moments through their conversations, or their silences, this short is quite rich in characterizations, and offshoots for new stories to explore. All the while we follow Dayo’s journey where he deals with an excruciating suffering, grieving his deceased wife and child.

Cumberbatch said the awards are “a celebration of an industry that’s about imagery, and images speaking as loud as if not louder sometimes than words. So it’s a small gesture,” the actor told BBC News.
“But away from this, what we all have to do is continue to put pressure on our politicians as far as the refugee crisis goes, continue to put pressure on the Putin regime, continue to help in any which way we can — whether that’s through donations or housing refugees, all of which I’m looking to do and have done.

But, her fans don’t know that much about the young woman who is taking the world by storm with roles on hit shows such as EastEnders and even “The Girl Before,” and we thought it might be time to rectify that situation.

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for all episodes of “The Girl Before,” which arrived to HBO Max on February 10.
David Oyelowo isn’t eager to inhabit a minimalist home like his character from “The Girl Before.” “It would probably be fun for a weekend as a novelty, but this is not the place for me,” he says. “If Edward Monkford were my landlord, I think he would murder me.”
And murder was certainly on viewers’ minds during the four-episode HBO Max series, as Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Jane doggedly pursues answers about the death of her building’s former tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer).
Before joining the cast, Oyelowo didn’t read the book “The Girl Before” is based on, written by creator and executive producer J.P. Delaney: “I didn’t want to know, because that’s part of the joy of it, trying to figure it out. Having all these twists and turns,...

Photo: ‘The Girl Before’ If a house was designed and built with the sole purpose of understanding you and your patterns to a molecular level, it’s probably too good to be true, right? This is the lesson that Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Jane and Jessica Plummer as Emma may come to learn in the new HBO Max thriller, ‘The Girl Before’. 'The Girl Before' - Strong Performances Making the Grade Gugu Mbatha-Raw, fresh off her strong performances in ‘Loki’ and ‘The Morning Show’, has proven herself to be a tremendously capable and outstanding leading actress in her work in ‘The Girl Before.’ Mbatha-Raw plays Jane, a woman suffering from the very difficult trauma of having lost her child to stillbirth. Jane is relatively stuck in life, and she finds an awakening when she visits a beautiful modern high-tech house being offered for rent. The house has a strange feeling to it,...

“Selma” star David Oyelowo has played spies, saints, and even a guy who drowns a dog in “Chaos Walking,” but you’ve never seen him in a role quite like Svengali-esque architect Edward in “The Girl Before,” which premieres on HBO Max on Feb. 10. It’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, who adapted it for television.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Jane, who’s trying recover from a tragic loss. She applies to live rent-free at One Fulgate House, an ultra-modern, minimalist house designed by Edward, who has some very strict rules for his tenants. Jane encounters his rarely-given approval, and he soon makes his romantic intentions towards her clear. He becomes her lover as well as her landlord, but when she learns the previous female tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer) – who looked remarkably like her – died in the house, she wonders if she can really trust him.

“When you watch this show, you’re probably thinking, ‘Gosh, this is a bit crazy.’” So says David Oyelowo of his character in HBO Max’s twisty psychological thriller “The Girl Before.”
In the four-episode series, Oyelowo stars as Edward Monkford, the brooding architect behind a one-of-a-kind ultra-minimalist home in London that comes with a daunting set of rules. Viewers follow two women, Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Emma (Jessica Plummer), during separate timelines in which they inhabit Edward’s house and subsequently enter relationships with the mysterious owner.
In exchange for affordable rent, the women are expected to live according to Edward’s stipulations: no pictures, no ornaments, no children, no books—the list goes on, to the tune of 200 rules.
Oyelowo’s Edward is unfazed by the home’s unique setup: “All buildings are designed to have an effect on people: castles to intimidate; churches to inspire,” he says in the second episode.

British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw has performed in nearly every genre of film since breaking out in the 2013 Amma Asante-directed feature, “Belle.” Since then, Mbatha-Raw has played a pop star, a mother, and even a member of the Time Variance Authority in the Disney+ series, “Loki.” Now, she’s starring in the HBO Max series “The Girl Before,” a dark, twisted murder mystery about a woman named Jane (Mbatha-Raw) who moves into One Folgate Street, a minimalist house where a woman (Jessica Plummer) had previously died.
The series was a jump for the actress, not just because she was coming off the time-travel weirdness of “Loki.” But it was an opportunity to take the reins as an associate producer on the limited series, collaborating on several of the day-to-day elements as well as playing a frustrated, sometimes scared, woman searching for answers. On top of that, the performers were all...

Much in the vein of “The Girl on the Train” or “The Woman in the Window,” HBO Max’s new limited series “The Girl Before” depicts the aftereffects of trauma taking place within the mind of a troubled woman. Also like those projects, it’s neither as acute as it thinks it is or as fun as viewers may want it to be. This British show — which is adapted by J. P. Delaney from his novel and which aired on BBC One overseas late last year — goes to extremes, but viewers may be forgiven for not following it to its conclusion.
Here, Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Jane, who is increasingly isolated from the world as she can’t stop replaying a violent attack she suffered. In the present day, Jane is living in a strange, modernist home — one whose residents must agree to a set of strict conditions set by the...

There’s a feeling of familiarity in Lisa Brühlmann’s adaptation of J.P. Delaney’s “The Girl Before.” It’s possible that feeling comes from how deeply inspired it seems by Hitchcock features, particularly “Vertigo.” Or maybe it’s how the story weaves between two separate women who share far more in common than they realize. Brühlmann herself has worked on twisty stories of dueling women in the likes of “Killing Eve,” and while this HBO Max series never veers into that frenetic territory, it shows the quadrants “The Girl Before” is hitting. It makes for one emotionally complex and engaging four-part series.
As Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) says upon entering the minimalist house designed by brilliant architect Edward Monkford (David Oyelowo), “It feels like it’s waiting for someone.” The house itself has everything: a below market rent, a housekeeper system that would make Siri blush, and a list of...

Warning: contains spoilers for all episodes of The Girl Before, available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
If you had to place a bet on the more likely murderer between a) a wealthy perfectionist who’s creepily obsessed with controlling women who look exactly like his dead wife, or b) some sadsack everyman who got dumped for being too needy, your money would clearly be on the rich weirdo.
In BBC thriller The Girl Before, architect Edward Monkford played by David Oyelowo is the one who sets off the danger siren. Handsome, moodily intense, wearer of designer suits… with his quasi-contractual sex arrangements and expensive gifts, this modern-day Bluebeard is your classic on-screen danger to women. When his tenant/lover Emma dies after falling down the stairs of his chic, minimalist home, of course he was the one who pushed her. Who else would it be? Her mopey ex, Simon?...

As those of us who have spent more time than usual at home over the last couple of years will know, those four walls can be a sanctuary, prison or, at times, both. Beautiful, monolithic and eerily empty, the house in the new BBC/HBO drama The Girl Before is definitely both. “The house,” says Gugu Mbatha-Raw with a laugh, “is the real star.” At one point in the first episode, Mbatha-Raw’s character Jane appears to have developed an intense relationship with it, caressing its smooth stone and glass.
In The Girl Before, adapted from the bestselling psychological thriller by Jp Delaney, Jane passes a rigorous vetting process before being allowed to rent this minimalist dream home.

As Mipcom rolled on at Cannes, U.K. public service broadcaster BBC held a preview of its upcoming scripted titles for journalists at an event on Monday presided over by Piers Wenger, director of BBC Drama.
A hot button topic of discussion in recent weeks has been the matter of “distinctively British content.” Hours before he was removed from office, John Whittingdale, then Minister for Media and Data, told the Royal Television Society convention at Cambridge that the government intended to introduce a White Paper that includes a requirement for such content.
“If it’s set in Britain and made in Britain by our public service broadcasters, then it should be distinctively British,” Whittingdale had said.
These proposals were rubbished during a BFI London Film Festival event last week by “Succession” writer Lucy Prebble and “His Dark Materials” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” writer Jack Thorne.

EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer has joined Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo in HBO Max and BBC One’s limited series The Girl Before.
Deadline revealed the adaptation of Jp Delaney’s bestselling psychological thriller in January, and Plummer has signed up to play Emma in the series. It represents one of her first big roles outside of her work on BBC soap opera EastEnders.
The Girl Before follows Jane (Mbatha-Raw), a traumatized woman who falls in love with an extraordinary minimalist house, which remains under the spell of the architect (Oyelowo) who originally designed it. But when she discovers that another damaged woman died in the same One Folgate Street property three years earlier, she starts to wonder if her own story is just a rerun of the girl before.
