Something in the Water opens with an attack in a London subway station. Not by a shark on its way to visit relatives at the aquarium, but by a group of homophobes who take objection to Meg and Kayla daring to hold hands in public. It leaves Meg with mental and physical scars, as well as causing the pair to break up.
A year later, Lizzie and Dominic are getting married at a Caribbean resort, reuniting several old friends including Dominic’s sister Cam, Ruth and, much to each other’s dismay, Kayla and Meg. Now that everyone is here, they just need to do something stupid so they can become shark bait. Cam takes care of that by suggesting they all pile into a small motorboat...

The Requin. The Reef: Stalked. The Black Demon. Now Something in the Water. I’m reaching my breaking point with shark attack movies that are too distracted by other plotlines to deliver on their promise: shark attacks. Hayley Easton Street’s Something in the Water might be the biggest offender listed, taking roughly thirty minutes until the first shark-related incident, then another fifteen(ish) minutes for the first of frustratingly few substantial shark spottings. Cat Clarke’s screenplay tries to establish poignant storytelling about hate crimes, broken relationships, and debilitating traumas, but in doing so, forgets about the massive shark plastered all over the film’s marketing materials. Street and Clarke aim to elevate shark cinema with emotional throughlines, but sink the entire project with an alarmingly imbalanced approach.
The film opens with same-sex couple Meg (Hiftu Quasem) and Kayla (Natalie Mitson) strolling home one night, publicly displaying their love,...

"Someone needs to swim for help." Studiocanal has revealed an official UK trailer for a shark horror movie titled Something in the Water, made by a VFX artist turned filmmaker named Hayley Easton Street. It's set for release in the UK in July this summer, though no US date confirmed yet. This all-female production is written by, directed by, produced by, and stars nothing but women. Awesome! "This summer, fear will find new depths." The survival thriller follows a group of five girlfriends who must fight for their lives in open water after a dream wedding transformed into a nightmare. Starring Hiftu Quasem, Lauren Lyle, Natalie Mitson, Nicole Rieko Setsuko, and Ellouise Shakespeare-Hart, as a group of friends on a holiday gone very wrong. It's always the same story in these shark movies, something goes wrong while out on the water. But this still looks pretty good! They'll never stop making more shark horror movies,...

Going into this review, I don’t think I have much to say about Mercy Falls other than, with all respect to the cast and crew, you all came together and made a movie. Not a great one mind you but I have never made a movie so I respect the achievement.
Although, if the idea of a horror/thriller set in the Scottish Highlands from a director whose previous project was a Christmas movie tickles your fancy, I guess Mercy Falls would be the exact kind of movie you need in your life. Or if like me you are acutely aware that every now and then when taking a punt on an indie horror, it has turned out to be a bit of an unsung gem,...

From characters’ irrepressible horniness to a deeply confusing instigating incident, Ryan Hendrick’s hiking slasher has all the hallmarks of a dud
‘Oh and Rhona … remember, the secret is to never look back,” says sinister hitchhiker Carla (Nicolette McKeown), as she climbs a cliff. “You mean down,” someone corrects her. Yes, we get the point, given that half the characters in the film are nursing past traumas, from random acts of rural brutality to Middle Eastern combat theatre flashbacks. But such is the unsubtle way of Ryan Hendrick’s overblown Highland horror; it can’t settle for simply being a stripped-down descent into wilderness atavism. It also chucks in an irrepressibly horny crew of hikers, creepy Scottish folktales and gratuitous Homeric quotations for good measure.
The real killer is the highly implausible instigating incident. Rhona (Lauren Lyle) and pals set off on to the moors to locate the family cabin she has been bequeathed,...

When Karen Pirie lies down on the job, this detective isn’t loafing. She’s busy concentrating, trying not to scream in frustration at the chauvinistic bosses who’ve assigned her a perplexing 25-year-old cold case with little confidence she’ll solve it. They should know better. Mystery fans already do, if they’re familiar with the work of prolific Scottish novelist Val McDermid, whose Tony Hill series inspired six seasons of Wire in the Blood. Let’s hope for similar results for BritBox’s Karen Pirie, featuring a scrappy up-and-comer who erupts in fury whenever it’s suggested she only got this case—the 1996 murder of a barmaid that’s the subject of a nagging podcast—because of her gender. Though she’s the first to admit, in an instantly endearing and self-deprecating aside, that it’s “not the greatest time to be called Karen.” The prime suspects in the case,...

Outlander‘s upcoming seventh season is gearing up for the return of several familiar faces and making way for new ones as Starz announces additional casting. Along with unveiling five new cast members joining the time-traveling fantasy drama, additional fan favorites are set to return for the latest chapter, which is currently filming in Scotland. Perhaps one of the biggest announcements is the return of Graham McTavish in his role as Dougal MacKenzie, uncle to Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), who was killed by the Highlander and his wife Claire (Caitriona Balfe) at the end of Season 2 before the Battle of Culloden. Given the state of British politics, I’m not sure that using a reality TV format to choose our next prime minister is such a terrible idea. Of course, Make Me Prime Minister (Channel 4) isn’t actually designed to do this – that’s the task of a tiny handful of unrepresentative Tory activists in Liz Truss’s case – but rather to entertain and to educate us a little.
I have to say, having been badly jaundiced by over-exposure to politics and politicians over some decades, I am pleasantly surprised at how well the show works. Somehow it actually manages to make the political process look like God’s work. A minor miracle.
Basically, it’s a bit of a rip-off of The Apprentice, with two teams of members of the public taking it in turns to be their “team leader”, ie Pm, and to take on assignments and make fools of themselves.

What happens when ordinary people fall down the rabbit hole of extraordinary criminal activity? This is a premise that has captivated prestige television in recent years, from Sally Wainwright’s miraculous Happy Valley to Noah Hawley’s pitch-black re-imagination of Fargo. Normal people – neither good nor bad – trapped in a cycle of bad decisions. And this is the territory that Steven Moffatt – ex of the parishes of Doctor Who and Sherlock – is treading with his new four-part BBC thriller, Inside Man.
The man on the inside is Stanley Tucci’s Jefferson Grieff, a former professor of criminology now on death row for murdering his wife. He’s imprisoned somewhere deep in the arid American South, where he takes a philosophical stance on his impending death. When asked whether he wants to be executed, he replies with a shrug, “I don’t want to be executed, and my wife didn’t...

Who’s ready for more turtle soup?
Outlander on Friday released a deleted scene from last Sunday’s episode, “Uncharted.” Yes, it does reference the sherry-filled turtle soup that Claire so greedily slurped down at the end of the episode. Sadly, it does not include more naked funtimes (the soup’s only got so much power, ye ken). But there’s a fun introduction from stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the pair (green screen and all), along with co-stars Lauren Lyle and César Domboy, as they film the Frasers’ arrival at Port Royal.

Starz announced today that two more key roles have been cast for Outlander Season 3.
Playing an older version of Fergus, the beloved French pickpocket that Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) took under their wing during Outlander Season 2, will be César Domboy (The Walk). Oh how we're going to miss that young moppet, though!!
Also joining the cast, playing one of Laoghaire’s (Nell Hudson) young daughters, Marsali, is Lauren Lyle.
Born into a brothel, Fergus has grown up into a charming, devilishly handsome man with a strong sense of loyalty and decorum, despite his unconventional upbringing.
He is the ultimate romantic, wearing his heart on his sleeve and falling in and out of love easily.
However, Fergus’s devotion to Jamie has never wavered, making the Frenchman an integral part of the Fraser clan.
Still, his debonair demeanor masks a longing for a lasting love and a permanent sense of belonging.

Outlander has cast another pivotal role ahead of Season 3, tapping British newcomer Lauren Lyle to portray Laoghaire’s (Nell Hudson) high-spirited daughter Marsali, TVLine has learned.
The 18-year-old character, whose importance to the story grows as Diana Gabaldon’s books go on, has a rebellious and romantic mind of her own. She knows what she wants and she goes after it — reputation and propriety be damned.
Lyle’s credits include the UK series Broken, Holby City and Radges.
