Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

It’s not just writers who should be worried about AI. It’s everyone from truck drivers and lawyers down to Hollywood executives. That’s what a group of showrunners emphasized to TheWrap in an exclusive panel about the WGA strike.
“You know who else needs to be real worried? Those execs that I’m like, ‘Can you read the script? Have you got me notes yet?'” Gloria Calderón Kellett, showrunner of “With Love” and “One Day at a Time,” said. “Execs are on the chopping block before writers are.”
“The fact that they won’t talk about [AI] with us, which is the most obvious one, it’s very short-sighted. It’s going to hurt them more,” Ilana Peña, showrunner of “Diary of a Future President,” added.

Sigourney Weaver is weighing in on news of the “Working Girl” reboot, which is being produced by Selena Gomez.
The actress who starred in the 1988 hit comedy called it a “great, fantastic idea” during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at Elle’s annual Women in Hollywood event on Monday night. Weaver was one of many stars who were honoured by the magazine.
“Go for it. I think it’s a great instinct to want to do that again,” Weaver told the publication of Gomez’s reboot of the six-time Oscar nominated film. “It’s a kind of eternal story, you know. But seen in the new light, it’s especially interesting to think of Katharine double-crossing her assistant in today’s world. It would be worse, wouldn’t it? It would really suck. So I don’t know, I’m really excited to see it.”

Sigourney Weaver is ready to revisit “Working Girl” more than 35 years later.
The 1988 workplace comedy starred Weaver as Katharine, a cutthroat boss who steals her assistant Jess’ (Melanie Griffith) ideas. After she is laid up following a ski accident, Jess takes Katharine’s place at work and falls in love with a client played by Harrison Ford. The film landed six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Griffith, and Best Supporting Actress nods for Weaver and co-star Joan Cusack.
“Only Murders in the Building” star Selena Gomez confirmed earlier this year that she is producing a reboot of the film, with Deadline reporting it will likely be a Hulu release through 20th Century. Ilana Pena is set to write the script, and Gomez is likely also starring as Jess.

Get out the hairspray and shoulder pads: 20th Century Studios is developing a new version of the 1988 film "Working Girl." The project reportedly has "Only Murders in the Building" star and executive producer Selena Gomez in final negotiations to produce the film, with Ilana Peña ("Diary of a Future President") adapting the script. The site doesn't say if Gomez would star in the role made famous by Melanie Griffith, though she would be a great choice, with a very different feel than Griffith had. And a different feel is certainly called for with a new take on this film.

Progress continues to be incremental in front of and behind television cameras in Hollywood. An October 2021 UCLA Television Diversity study examined 461 scripted television shows airing or streaming during the 2019-20 season. It revealed that only 32.1 percent of scripted broadcast network shows, 28.1 percent on cable TV, and 26.8 percent on streaming platforms, featured majority non-white casts. Each category saw an increase of roughly 2-3 percent over the previous season. In summary, despite popular claims of a “renaissance” for Bipoc creatives in Hollywood (especially for African Americans), there’s still much work to be done on the matter of inclusion in all job areas.
As their study states, the Bipoc group is not proportionately represented to their share of the U.S. population, even though audience interest in programming with talent that represents the nation’s diversity, continues to increase.
When Bipoc narratives are controlled by non-bipoc creatives, character story lines may lack authenticity,...

‘Hermanas’ Sisters Drama From Crystal Ferreiro, Ilana Peña & Jerry Bruckheimer TV In Works At The CW
Exclusive: Diary of a Future President creator Ilana Peña is re-teaming with the Disney+ series’ writer Crystal Ferreiro for Hermanas, a drama with some humor in development at the CW. The project hails from Jerry Bruckheimer Television and CBS Studios, where Peña and Jbtv are under deals.
Written by Ferreiro with Peña supervising, Hermanas follows three sisters—individually described as a “hot mess,” a “rigid overachiever” and a “homemaker who never left”—who reunite in their small town in Naples, Fl after their brother, the crown jewel of the family, gets into a debilitating accident. As the women put their resentments aside to help him, the Primés realize that the sanitized version you present to family evaporates when you’re in close quarters, and what’s exposed is your most messy, authentic and vulnerable self.
Ferreiro executive producers alongside Peña, who executive produces under her Tilde Productions banner and will serve as showrunner.

The Covid-19 pandemic has ushered in a new appreciation for streaming platforms while families are “together at home.” Variety recently reported that the streaming competition depends on strong children’s content. Kids have always needed creative, educational and inclusive stories. But during this time of self-isolation, the streamers have become a conduit to the outside and a way to stay connected to a world that is full of diversity. Today’s most innovative storytellers are cultivating children’s stories diverse as real life by amplifying worlds inclusive of all gender identities told by immigrants, the disabled, Lgbtq, Muslims, Latinx, indigenous, black, Asian and all people of color.

At first glance, the CW’s “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and Disney Plus’s “Diary of a Future President” could not be more different. The former centered on a woman with borderline personality disorder who overturned her life multiple times for a chance at love but who still struggled in relationships because she didn’t fully love herself, while the latter follows the trials and tribulations of coming of age as a middle schooler, who will one day grow up to be the President of the United States of America. But they do have one very important thing in common: Ilana Peña, who started as an assistant on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and worked her way up to staff writer there, and now created and runs “Diary of a Future President.”
“There’s a quirky humor of ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ that I learned how to hone there and was able to bring into ‘Diary,'” Peña tells Variety.

Jane the Virgin may be over, but its star, Gina Rodriguez is returning to the small screen this month.
Disney+ has dropped the official trailer for Diary of a Future President, which tells the story of a 12-year-old Cuban-American girl named Elena who has aspirations of becoming the President of the United States of America.
Rodriguez is on board as the adult -- and Potus -- while newcomer Tess Romero plays the teenage iteration of Elena.
The jumping off point in the story is when Adult Elena finds her diary, which chronicles her life and journey to becoming the most powerful person in the world.
It's an inspirational story, and one that seems like a perfect fit for Disney+, coming on the heels of the family-friendly High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez was all apologies Tuesday afternoon after an Instagram post showing her singing a lyric with the N-word sparked a social media backlash.
The offending post, which has since been deleted, showed Rodriguez in a make-up chair and passing the time by vamping and singing along to the Fugees track Ready or Not from 1996.
The 35-year-old star addressed the hubbub with another Instagram post: “Hey, what’s up everybody. I just wanted to reach out and apologize. I am sorry. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend took a break from romance to make a statement about health, both mental and physical.
In a perfect parallel, the audience got to worry about two lead female characters that we adore, only for them both to end up in the same boat.
Rebecca and Paula must be protected at all times, and yet this time around it is up to them to take those steps to make sure they are okay. That fear that came with them almost suffering huge mistakes with their health was too close a call.
During Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 4 Episode 12, Rebecca didn't want to take antidepressants that would help her mental health. This becomes a backslide for her in her relationship with Greg, and her relationship with herself.
Rebecca spends all night making mistakes that eventually lead her to make her mental health a priority again, which includes incorporating medication to help her with that.

The upcoming streamer has given the half-hour, single-camera comedy series a 10-episode order. Told from the narration of her diary, the series follows a Cuban-American 12 year old girl as she navigates the ups and downs of middle school and her journey to becoming the future president of the United States.
Ilana Peña created the series and serves as writer, with Robin Shorr set to executive produce and serve as showrunner. Rodriguez and Emily Gipson will executive produce via Rodriguez’s I Can and I Will Productions banner. CBS Television Studios, where I Can and I Will is under an overall deal, will produce.
This marks the first series Peña has created. She most recently served as a staff writer on The CW series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” She is repped by UTA.
