“A Transparent Musical” is heading to New York and Broadway. The show, the first stage play from Amazon Studios, premiered in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in May — becoming the last show at the Taper for now, as Center Theater Group has canceled all shows at the stage following the close of “A Transparent Musical” on June 25.
But whereas the Mark Taper is on hold, “A Transparent Musical” has big things in store. According to Amazon, the show’s producers “intend to bring the show to Broadway sometime in 2024.” The musical, or course, is based on Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-winning series “Transparent,” created by Joey Soloway, who also wrote the book to the stage musical with Mj Kaufman. Faith Soloway wrote the music and lyrics to “A Transparent Musical.”

“There was this creation that came out of ‘what do we do?’” explains Judith Light. She is referring to “Transparent: Musicale Finale,” the epic musical sendoff for the Pfefferman clan of Amazon’s Emmy-winning “Transparent.” Creator Jill Soloway and their songwriter sibling Faith Soloway had always tinkered with the idea to turn the series into a musical. The departure of lead actor Jeffrey Tambor marked the perfect opportunity for such a bold shift, and provided Light’s Shelly Pfefferman with zippy showtunes and emotional catharsis. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Light had previously delivered a touching rendition of Alanis Morissette’s “One Hand in My Pocket” in the Season 3 finale, but the requirements of this musical movie were much more involved. There was “great preparation,” she notes, though the actual shoot was accomplished in just one month.

Emotions were high at the New York premiere of Season 5 of “Transparent,” a 100-minute musical that creator Jill Soloway has dubbed the “Musicale Finale,” as cast and crew gathered to bid adieu to the groundbreaking series. Equal parts heartbreaking, creatively risky, spiritual and wacky, the first TV series to put trans characters front and center took its licks and went out with a swan song — literally.
Following a premiere screening at the third annual Tribeca TV Festival, series creator Jill Soloway, Season 5 co-writer and composer Faith Soloway, and stars Judith Light, Jay Duplass, Alexandra Billings, and Shakina Nayfack gathered to reflect on the grand finish.

It’s no secret that Jeffrey Tambor’s “Transparent” character Maura Pfefferman is killed off on the Amazon series’ upcoming musical finale. The challenge for creator Jill Soloway was how to pull that trigger tastefully, as Tambor’s exit from the show was anything but.
“Our tone has always been one of — I heard someone call it ‘vigorous tonal shifts,'” Soloway said Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “If you’re watching ‘Transparent,’ you’re laughing and then you’re crying and then it’s sexy and then it’s sad again. It’s kind of a thrill ride for neurotic people — [you’re] thrown around, shaking the anxiety out of you.”
“And, of course, that occurred to us: Is this going to be taken as a sort of celebration?” Soloway continued. “But, in fact, when you watch the movie, there are so many unbelievably painful, heartfelt moments where our cast [is] mourning Maura,...

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway addressed how the show’s upcoming musical finale allowed the team behind the show to move beyond the scandal that saw series star Jeffrey Tambor exit the series.
“When people talk about musicals, when people turn to song instead of conversation, its because there are certain things that can’t be said with words,” Soloway said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Saturday.
“As storytellers and as artists, this was our chance to heal together,” they continued. “Every time we got together…we were just trying to find our way back to that holy belief that what we were doing mattered…We had to find our way back to joy and the musical allowed us to do that.”

Amazon has released a first look at the much-discussed final season of “Transparent,” Jill Soloway’s revolutionary Amazon series that ushered in a wave of respectful transgender storytelling on film and TV. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series will conclude with a musical film in place of a fifth season, a creative decision precipitated by the removal of the show’s lead actor, Jeffrey Tambor, following allegations of sexual misconduct that cast a pall over the beloved show in 2017. Fans have been wondering how Soloway and the rest of the writers would continue the story of the Pfefferman clan without their titular matriarch, and the answer is finally here: Maura is dead.

“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway confirmed that Jeffrey Tambor’s character will be killed off in the two-hour series finale, after the actor was fired from the show in 2018.

“We were all in mourning in many ways, and we all had to process together,” Soloway said. “It was important [for the show] to go through all those stages. The show has always been a reflection of who we were, and we were mourning our own narrative.”

Whatever you do, don’t bet against Jill Soloway. The creator of Amazon Studios’ first major hit show and a game changer for transgender visibility, Soloway will conclude “Transparent” without her central character and the Emmy-winning actor who embodied her. There has been much speculation surrounding the final season of “Transparent,” the Amazon Original series created by Jill Soloway. The show’s future was in limbo after the departure of star Jeffrey Tambor, who was fired by Amazon following allegations of sexual harassment on set (Tambor denies the allegations). In an interview with The New York Times, Soloway promised a fitting finale for the Emmy-winning series — complete with musical numbers.
“It will hopefully feel like ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ mixed with ‘La La Land’ mixed with ‘Flight of the Conchords’ with something more Jewish thrown in,” Soloway said. “A little ‘Yentl.’”
“Transparent” was based on Soloway’s lived experience of seeing a parent transition, and Soloway and their sister, Faith Soloway, had been kicking around the musical idea long before “Transparent.”
“This idea of music rescuing our family was all there,” Soloway said. “So we’re like, Let’s just keep blowing on the flame.

After you’ve done the impossible, what’s next?
The question functions as a central thesis for “Transparent” Season 3, as Maura Pfefferman — who came out to her family in Season 1 and fell in love during Season 2 — wonders why she’s still unhappy despite having “everything.” This kind of morose existentialism has been a marker of outstanding television of late (“The Leftovers,” “BoJack Horseman” and Jay Duplass’ “Togetherness,” to name a few), but perhaps the more interesting aspect of the question itself derives from why Jill Soloway is asking it here and now.
“Transparent” Season 2 was a creative barnburner — alive with intensity from scene to scene as Soloway not only made crucial adjustments to the character dynamics established in Season 1, but introduced a time-jumping theme that built to a sensational crescendo of emotions. It was, in reductive terms, the best it could possible be.
So, what’s next?

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

This week's episode was written by Faith Soloway, creator Jill's sister, who played a cantor in season one. It was directed by Marielle Heller, who previously made The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Sundance's buzzy film about a 15-year-old girl's sexual awakening with her mother's boyfriend. Heller is a natural choice for "New World Coming" — her film is the type of beautiful train-wreck-dramedy that merges perfectly with Transparent's aesthetic. In this episode, the void between cis and trans women continues to grow. Maura wakes up worlds away, in Davina's cramped but cozy apartment. Removing us from the show's predominant L.A.-modern aesthetic is a really effective way to make this feel like a clear break from Maura's family life. We learn that Davina's cisgender boyfriend, Sal, will get out of jail soon. Shea hooked up with one of the Marines from the night before and delivers a perfect...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...
