Innisbrook (USA), March 17 (Ians) Korea’s Byeong Hun An fired a bogey-free 3-under 68 to lie two strokes behind the co-leaders after the first round of the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Golf Resort’s Copperhead Course, here.
An Byeong is two behind the leaders, Ryan Brehm, Adam Schenk and Stephan Jaeger, who carded matching 66s. Two of the tournament’s top draws, Jordan Spieth fired a 67 for tied fourth while Justin Thomas opened with a 69 on Thursday.
Akshay Bhatia, who accepted PGA Tour’s Temporary membership recently, opened with two birdies, but closed with three bogeys. In between, he had three other birdies and two bogeys for a round of 1-under 71 and was placed tied 21st.
Bhatia, who has one win on the Korn Ferry Tour, was runner-up at the Puerto Rico Open earlier this month. That finish helped him gain temporary membership to the PGA Tour.

Ponte Vedra Beach (USA), March 9 (Ians) Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama believes he has “found something” to turn his golf fortunes around as he chases for a win at this week’s The Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s flagship tournament.
The 31-year-old enters the US$25 million showpiece at Tpc Sawgrass in need of some good form following two successive missed cuts and only one top-10 to show for this season.
After an abbreviated week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Matsuyama hit the practice range immediately last weekend in search of a quick fix, especially with an errant driver as he ranks a lowly 130th in Strokes Gained Off the Tee.
“I practiced right away,” said Matsuyama, who presently sits in 90th place on the FedExCup points list. “I feel like I’ve found something to focus on, but I’m still figuring out how exactly to make that happen.”

Atlanta (US), Aug 29 (Ians) Korean star, Sungjae Im, came agonisingly close to one of the greatest victories by an Asian player when he finished tied second alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as Rory McIlroy scripted a historic third FedExCup for a record third time as he came back from six shots to win the Tour Championships.
McIlroy, who had started the week, six shots behind top seed Scheffler under the staggered start system, fell 10 behind within two holes on the first day as he started the first round with a triple bogey and a bogey. From there he clawed back into contention. Still, he was six behind when the final round start.
With things just not happening for Scheffler, the Northern Ireland golfer, McIlroy shot 4-under 66 after his 63 in the third round.
Scheffler collapsed with 73 and finished tied second with Sungjae Im. Im may well have been atop the leaderboard...

Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida), March 13 (Ians) Ten years after watching one of his golf idols K.J. Choi make history at The Players Championship, Korea's Sungjae Im put himself in prime position to emulate the feat in the PGA Tour's flagship tournament, even as India's Anirban Lahiri crashed out.
With this, Lahiri has now failed to progress beyond the second round in four of the five starts at this PGA Tour event. He carded 78 on first day and 72 in the second round, and the total of 150 was not enough for him to make the cut.
As a 13-year-old, Im watched replays of Choi's momentous triumph in 2011 at The Stadium Course at Tpc Sawgrass, which helped sparked his American dream. On Friday, Im charged into contention with a solid 6-under 66 in the second round, highlighted by a career-first six consecutive birdies.

La Quinta (California), Jan 25 (Ians) Korea's Si Woo Kim claimed a dramatic one-shot victory over a fast-charging Patrick Cantlay at The American Express, earning his third PGA Tour title to end a four-year winless run.
The 25-year-old on Sunday closed with a superb 8-under 64 at PGA West Stadium Course which included pivotal birdies on Hole Nos. 16 and 17 from four feet and 19 feet respectively to overhaul Cantlay, who had set the clubhouse mark at 21-under following a blistering course record 61.
Australian Cameron Davis finished third for his career best result on Tour after a closing 64 while American Tony Finau, one of the overnight leaders with Kim and Max Homa, settled for fourth place following a 68.
Kim maintained his cool despite a jam-packed leaderboard and kept the bogeys off his card for a third time this week. He made birdies on Hole Nos. 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11 to stay in the title chase before producing...
