“Prepare yourselves.”
That’s what a sword weilding Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) declares to Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and her other warrior companions in the just released teaser trailer for Season 2 of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – see below:
Season 2 of the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation is coming on August 29, and “prepare yourselves” just might be an understatement.
One word: Sauron. Another word: Unleashed.
Much grittier and darker than most of Season 1, the just released peek at Season 2 also gives a brief look at the Charlie Vicker’s portrayed Mordor master’s Dark Tower. As well, there’s some new rings and their creation in there too, and one Hell of an explosion that could rival Mount Doom’s big blow-up in Season 1. Or, as Khazad-dûm Prince Durin (Owain Arthur) puts it in said minute-long teaser: “an evil, ancient and powerful has returned” — as you can see above.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the latest marquee TV series to move forward with production amid the ongoing WGA strike, but the Amazon Prime Video show will be doing so without the services of executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
The sweeping fantasy series has 19 days of filming remaining, sources confirm to Variety, but per WGA strike rules, Payne, McKay and any other writer-producers are barred from participating in any writing-based duties during production while the strike continues — including making creative decisions on set. Instead, the show’s non-writing executive producers (like Lindsey Weber), directors and crew are overseeing production on the U.K.-based shoot.
According to a source close to the production, there have been multiple units filming on “Rings of Power,” including night shoots, for much of the duration of the season given its feature-film level scope. Payne and McKay also...

The writers strike, so far, has not affected production on Amazon series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and HBO’s House of the Dragon, both of which are currently shooting in the UK.
As Deadline has previously reported, scripts also had been completed for HBO’s House of the Dragon, which is currently shooting its second season in London, and productions remains unaffected.

Since its premiere last September, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has been proudly branded a hit by Amazon. Prime Video proclaimed that the fantasy series premiere day broke records for the streamer with 25 million viewers tuning in. As of March, Amazon has been calling it their biggest show ever, with over 100 million people worldwide tuning in. But streaming ratings are always nebulous, and a new report is calling the show’s success into question.
In the United States, only 37 percent of viewers who started “The Rings of Power” actually watched all eight episodes to completion, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter. The number was not shared directly from Amazon, but reportedly came from sources within the organization. Overseas, the completion rate was significantly better, but at 45 percent, less than half of all viewers were compelled to complete Amazon’s Middle-Earth adventure.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is saying goodbye to one of its most popular actors.
Joseph Mawle -- who played Adar, the leader of the Orcs -- is departing ahead of Season 2.
The role has been recast, with Peaky Blinders alum Sam Hazeldine taking over the role.
No reason has been given for the departure, but it is a huge blow to the series.
Mawle earned much praise for his portrayal of Adar, and there will undoubtedly be a lot of questions about how the character will fit into future storylines.
Amazon has also revealed that there will be even more new faces on the sprawling drama's second season.

The other new cast members’ roles are currently being kept under wraps, but all of them join the show in a recurring capacity.
Akuwudike has appeared in the TV series “Hanna,” “Ridley Road,” and “War of the Worlds,” along with the films “1917” and “Brexit.” Atour was a cast member in Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,...

Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen “Zates” Atour, Ben Daniels, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle (“Persuasion”), and Nicholas Woodeson have all joined the show in new roles, though exact character details are being kept under wraps.
In addition, Joseph Mawle will no longer play the orc leader Adar in Season 2, with Sam Hazeldine stepping into the role. The second season of the epic fantasy series is currently in production in the U.K.
“Since its premiere, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has been bringing audiences together to experience the magic and wonder of J.R.R. Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have found success as the showrunners of Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” but before they resurrected Middle Earth it was the Starship Enterprise they tried to get off the ground. McKay and Payne wrote a “Star Trek Beyond” sequel for director S.J. Clarkson that would’ve served as the fourth film in the J.J. Abrams-backed reboot series starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and more. The script, which McKay and Payne have rarely spoken about, featured Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, father of Pine’s James Kirk.
“I would love to tell you about it,” McKay told Esquire magazine, opening up in detail for the first time about the “Star Trek” movie never made. “We worked on a couple of ‘Star Trek’ movies. The one you’re asking about would have been the fourth in the franchise,...

“Season 2 is fundamentally different in that our main villain is out and about, and doing his thing,” The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power executive producer Lindsey Weber reveals of what’s coming in Amazon Prime Video’s next installment of its J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. “I think in some ways, it’s going to grittier, more intense, maybe a little scarier,” the EP adds.
That villain is of course Sauron, and the just released Season 1 finale unveiled would-be blacksmith and King of the Southlands Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) to be the deposed Dark Lord himself.

“The Rings of Power” is planning to close out season 1 of the “Lord of the Rings” prequel series in epic fashion. Ahead of next Friday’s conclusion, Prime Video debuted an epic trailer, promising that “all will be revealed” in the finale. Not only that, but the episode will also feature a new song by Fiona Apple.
As executive producer Lindsey Weber teased to Et, season 1 “really never takes its foot off the gas [as] every episode just keeps hitting,” while showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said that “we’re lighting a fuse and that fuse is burning down and hopefully there’s not just one, but several big booms coming later in the season for you.”
And based on the trailer for next week, there are still some major “big booms” yet to come. Fans of the series will want to watch the new footage again and again, as...

Jennifer Salke entered the Second Age in London.
The head of Amazon Studios spent the 72 hours leading up to the launch of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in a whirlwind, traveling from the series’ global premiere event in London’s Leicester Square to her Manhattan apartment to watch the early returns arrive via reports from Amazon’s formidable consumer research department. The “Rings” team was exhausted, having had no chance to recover from the grueling worldwide promotional campaign for the Amazon Prime Video series that is an enormous bet for the tech giant, being the most expensive television series ever produced. For most of launch day, Sept. 1, Salke and key members of her executive team, many members of the large ensemble cast and executive producers J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay and Lindsey Weber gathered together for hours in virtual “war rooms,” bone tired but energized, to wait for the world’s reaction.

In a CGI-heavy pop culture world, you'd think a production as pricey as "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" would go all-in on the visual effects. But although the new fantasy show's visuals are clearly top of the line, there's apparently also more practical work going on behind the scenes than meets the eye.
"Because there are hundreds of productions that are heavy on visual effects, and you can see it, the human eye is getting better and better and knows what is real and knows what isn't," the show's prosthetics department head Jamie Wilson recently explained to IGN.
Therefore, the team behind "The Rings of Power" decided early on that they wanted to make the show look as real as possible, using CGI as an enhancement but not the baseline for much of this version of Middle-earth. Plus, Wilson notes, prosthetics have also improved greatly since...

The cast of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” are going where they must, with hope.
Trilogy alums Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd took to social media to show their support for the diverse cast of Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” series. The stars wore T-shirts with a design showing a row of elf ears with different skin tones. Both Wood and Astin tweeted photos with the caption, “You are all welcome here.”
The actors starred in Jackson’s 2001 “The Fellowship of the Ring,” followed by 2002’s “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King” in 2003. Wood starred as Frodo, who sought to destroy the One Ring with the help of Samwise (Astin), Merry (Monaghan), and Pippin (Boyd).

Making a “Lord of the Rings” series means encountering a unique and occasionally frustrating technical challenge: Sometimes really big people and and really small people have to be in the same scene at the same time. Take for instance, a series of sequences that happen in the second episode of Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power.” Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenaugh) encounters a mysterious stranger (Daniel Weyman) who towers above her. Nori, who belongs to a race of Hobbit ancestors called the Harfoots, is supposed to be about four feet tall. This unknown figure who fell from the sky—and may be a Maiar, essentially a Wizard—is probably around seven.
“The idea of scale difference is one that most film crews haven’t encountered much in the other things they’ve done,” executive producer Lindsey Weber said. “It’s also one that’s inherent to Tolkien. It’s part of the property.

Streaming platforms are in a rare position where they don’t necessarily have to report their viewing numbers since they are in control of their content and don’t have to answer to sponsors. While, normally, streaming companies would give vague titles for some content as being “most watched” or “highest trending,” for the first time, Amazon has revealed the rating for their new Prime show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This is in celebration of their newest series’ premiere.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the service has announced that 25 million people have watched the show globally on its first-day release. Comparatively, HBO had boasted that the new Game of Thrones series House of the Dragon had become the company’s biggest premiere with nearly 10 million viewers and reaching 10 million for the second episode. Amazon has made its series available in 240 territories across the world, where...

Amazon says The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was its biggest series debut ever — and for the first time ever, the company’s Prime Video streaming service has actually released a viewing tally.
The company says 25 million people worldwide watched The Rings of Power on its first day of release (it debuted at 9 p.m. Et/6 p.m. Pt Thursday in the United States). Prime Video says that is the service’s top premiere ever.
As for context, there’s little to go on: Prime Video reps declined to say whether that’s an average viewership worldwide on day one, the number of people who watched at least a few minutes of the series, or something else. Nor is there any indication of how much bigger The Rings of Power was than the previous record holder on Prime Video (or...

Amazon made The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power a global event, with the Prime Video series dropping its first two episodes on September 1 and 2 (depending on your time zone), and its first day was a major success. Amazon has announced that more than 25 million global viewers watched The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on its first day, breaking all previous records and marking the biggest premiere in the history of Prime Video. “It is somehow fitting that Tolkien’s stories — among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre — have led us to this proud moment,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “I am so grateful to the Tolkien Estate — and to our showrunners J.D. When “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” began streaming on Amazon Prime this week, everyone knew that expectations were high. The billion-dollar series is reportedly the most expensive television show ever produced, and in many ways, Amazon’s status in the so-called streaming wars was contingent on the show’s success. On top of that, the series would inevitably face comparisons to Peter Jackson’s beloved “Lord of the Rings” films (especially considering Jackson’s claims that the show ghosted him). In short, the series didn’t just have to be a hit. It had to be a blockbuster.
And that’s exactly what happened. Amazon announced on Saturday that the first two episodes of the series, which were released Thursday night, were streamed more than 25 million times in their first 24 hours on the site. Those impressive (although unverified) numbers are said to have broken all previous Amazon records,...

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the biggest thing Amazon Prime Video has ever done, and it looks like the TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing has delivered big time.
Launching with two episodes in 240 counties and territories across the globe on September 1, the J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay co-created Rings of Power snared more 25 million viewers in its first day, according to the Jeff Bezos founded streamer.

Prime Video is forging a new path for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
The big-budget series debuted its first two episodes September 2, with an Amazon source telling The Hollywood Reporter that reviews are being held for 72 hours to weed out trolls — and not of the hulking J.R.R. Tolkien variety, though possibly as witless. (Racists have criticized the series’ diverse casting.) “The Rings of Power” currently has a 34 percent average audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an 87 percent critics score. As of print, there are zero reviews for the series on Prime Video with users unable to post.
A representative for Prime Video had not returned IndieWire’s request for comment at publish time.
Recently, Disney+ Marvel series “She-Hulk” was confirmed to be “review bombed” on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88 percent critics score distinctly different than the initial 36 percent audience score. The audience score later rose to 50 percent.

When asked about the competition between the two shows, “Rings of Power” executive producer Lindsey Weber dismissed the idea that these stories are in conflict with each other.
“For us, we don’t feel any of it. It’s totally manufactured by the media for headlines,” Weber said Tuesday night during a “Rings of Power” panel discussion at Film at Lincoln Center. “I’m quite certain that the cast and crew doesn’t feel any of it either. They know how hard it is to make these things.”

Oscar winner Allison Janney has a very special set of skills — including how to kick ass.
For the Netflix action film “Lou,” Janney stars as the titular retired vigilante whose life is interrupted after a desperate mother (Jurnee Smollett) begs her to help save her kidnapped daughter. Per an official synopsis: “As a massive storm rages, the two women risk their lives on a rescue mission that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.”
Logan Marshall-Green, Matt Craven, and Ridley Asha Bateman also star in the film, directed by Anna Foerster (“Underworld: Blood Wars”) from a script by Maggie Cohn and Jack Stanley. Bad Robot’s JJ Abrams, Hannah Minghella, and Jon Cohen are producing, with lead stars Janney and Emmy nominee Smollett executive producing. Lindsey Weber, behind Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is also serving as an executive producer.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 2 but eager fans will get a chance to watch the first two episodes on the big screen days before. Amazon teamed up with Cinemark to screen the debut episodes on August 31 for one night only.
