The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland offers players last chance to prepare for the first major of the season, and many took it, with the draw including quite a few interesting names.
For many players, it will be the first Atp tournament of the season, as they chose an approach of missing the first week, and playing the week before the 2024 Australian Open.
The 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland is held from January 8th to 13th, and the top seed at the tournament is American tennis sensation, Ben Shelton, who as one of the top four seeds has a bye in the first round.
In the second round of the tournament, the 21-year-old will already face some real competition, as he can meet either Fabian Marozsan, who bested Carlos Alcaraz in 2023, or Gael Monfils, a veteran on the Atp Tour.

The 2024 Barcelona Open has received a major boost, with local hero Carlos Alcaraz set to return to the Atp 500 event this year.
The tournament will feel like a long time away for the Spaniard. Alcaraz's next matches are exhibitions at the Australian Open, which includes a repeat of the 2022 US Open final with Casper Ruud.
However, the clay-court season is undoubtedly one that Alcaraz looks forward to every year. It is the surface that he grew up on, and how comfortable he feels on the dirt is clear for everyone to see.
Alcaraz is yet to translate that clay-court prowess into a triumph at the French Open. However, most in the tennis world agree it is only a matter of time before that changes. Some argue that he would have beaten Novak Djokovic in last year's semifinal, had cramp not set in.
The Barcelona Open is a tournament where Alcaraz has been successful.

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz is winning up his preseason preparations in his native Spain before flying to Australia.
With most of his peers already jetting Down Under and accumulating some minutes on the match court in one of two Atp tournaments running this week, Alcaraz has not signed up to play any warm-up tournaments before the season's first Grand Slam.
Instead, the young Spaniard elected to extend his off-season training into the new year at the Ferrero Tennis Academy in Villena. In recent weeks, Alcaraz has been a busy fixture, playing in multiple exhibition matches across three continents.
The 20-year-old took part in the second annual of TennisFest Gnp exhibition in Mexico City, where he played in front of nearly 30,000 fans and defeated American Tommy Paul. Alcaraz then traveled to Los Cabos to train hotel guests in a joint collaboration with the One&Only Palmilla - a Mexican holiday resort.

Running from January 1st to 7th, the Hong Kong Open returns to the Atp Tour after a 21-year absence, and the draw for the 2024 edition has been released.
With three Top 20 players in the field, one of whom is a top tenner, this Atp 250 event is not bereft of star power. World No.5 Andrey Rublev is the biggest name at Victoria Park as he looks to refine his game ahead of the year's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Russian tends to play at a very decent level in the season's opening week and has a very nice draw on his Hong Kong debut. Rublev has a bye in the opening round as the top seed and doesn't know his second-round opponent yet.
He'll await the winner of the match between Pedro Cachin and a qualifier. Rublev could have his hands full by the quarterfinal stage should he get there.

Carlos Alcaraz is widely viewed as the heir apparent to Rafael Nadal, but a former Spanish Top 10 player disagrees with making such pronouncements.
In his bustling young career, Alcaraz has already won two Grand Slams and been ranked World No. 1 - the youngest player to do so in Atp history. Many tennis players tend to get a good grasp of their strengths and pinpoint solutions to their weaknesses so late in their careers.
But for Nadal and Alcaraz, to an extent, it has been the exact opposite, which is why tennis fans have jumped to make early judgments. Rankings don't lie. Alcaraz is a special talent who has shown remarkable poise and maturity beyond his years.
But former World No. 9 Roberto Bautista Agut denies the notion that Alcaraz is an incumbent to the seat of becoming Spanish tennis' flagbearer once Nadal leaves the stage.

The entry list for the 2024 Asb Classic in Auckland, an Atp 250 tournament running from January 8th to 13th, 2024, was revealed, and it promises a lot of exciting action.
As one of only five tournaments held before the Australian Open, the Asb Classic in Auckland managed to attract a very competitive field with many players that will attract fans.
After a two-year hiatus, the tournament, which is played at the Asb Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, returned to the calendar in 2023, and in 2024, it will be played once again.
Last year, Richard Gasquet proved to be the strongest player in the field, beating Cameron Norrie in the thrilling three-set battle to win the title. However, the Frenchman didn't make the initial cut for the main draw in 2024, and Norrie will return to the tournament only as a second seed.
That's because a young gun from the United States leads the entry list.

Roberto Bautista Agut was once ranked inside the Top 10. The same goes for Fabio Fognini and they faced each other today in the Valencia Challenger final. Neither player has had much success in recent months for various reasons.
Both are up there in age and are slowly getting pushed out of the top spots of tennis, but they're still good tennis players. On top of that, the Spaniard struggled with an injury that saw him miss a lot of action.

The 2023 Swiss Indoors will run from October 23 to 29, assembling 32 players in a highly competitive field for the last stop of the Atp 500 events this season.
The draw for this year's tournament has been released and there are a plethora of exciting matches that could have a substantial change in the rankings and the Atp Race. In addition to vying for a huge share of €2,196,000 of prize money , 500 ranking points will be up for grabs.
Holger Rune is the top seed at the event. He has earned a rematch against Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Swiss Indoors. The Serbian ended Rune's title defense in Stockholm this week , and a repeat of the same result in Basel will be a massive setback in the Dane's quest to qualify for the Atp Finals.
Another Atp Finals aspirant is Taylor Frtiz who is in Rune's half of the draw.

Despite his absence at this year's Asian swing, Novak Djokovic will remain as the Atp 's No. 1 ahead of rival Carlos Alcaraz , who only partially reduced the arrears in the latest Atp rankings.
The Serbian lost 500 points this past week, which he earned from winning the Astana Open last year. His points total stands at 11,045. Alcaraz added 90 points to his tally, bringing the difference between them to 2,240 points.
The Spaniard will need a minor miracle to overhaul that deficit, especially with reports that he could potentially withdraw from Basel . There are also changes with the other Top 10 players. Russia's Andrey Rublev rises to fifth - his previous career-best ranking after a runner-up finish in Shanghai.
That means Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas each drop down a spot to sixth and seventh respectively. While American Taylor Fritz falls to 10th after his winner's points from last year's Atp 500 in Tokyo were wiped off.

Carlos Alcaraz won't play for Spain at the upcoming Davis Cup Finals, and it proved an issue for Team Captain David Ferrer.
David Ferrer used to be a very good tennis player, being incredibly consistent although lacking major silverware. His tennis knowledge is vast, though, which is why he's leading the Spanish Davis Cup Team as Captain.
The former Atp player had some issues with the team because the country will be without top player Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta, who has been injured for a very long time. Despite the troubles, the country still put together a solid team consisting of veterans Roberto Bautista Agut and Albert Ramos and younger players like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
The country is hosting its group in Valencia, and ahead of that, Ferrer sat down with the media, discussing the upcoming matchups with Serbia, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Korea.

Carlos Alcaraz will lead the Spanish Team at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals alongside Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Roberto Bautista Agut .
Alcaraz has already represented Spain in the Davis Cup but he never played in the Davis Cup Finals. The Spaniard opted to play for Spain just days after winning the US Open last year . It didn't go very well as he was beaten by Felix Auger-Aliassime but he was excited about fulfilling a longtime dream of his.
The Spaniard had hopes of playing for Spain at the Davis Cup Finals later that year but an injury forced him to abandon those plans. He missed the Atp Finals because of the same injury though he managed to retain the number one rank at the end of the year.
The plan this year is identical. He wants to play for Spain at the Davis Cup Finals and he was nominated by Team Captain David Ferrer.

As one of the last clay-court tournaments in the calendar, the 2023 Kitzbuhel Open, also called the Generali Open for sponsorship reasons, didn't fail to attract interesting players, but for the home fans, one name will be the most important, the home crowd favourite Dominic Thiem .
The Austrian won the title in 2019, but the defending champion in 2023 is Roberto Bautista Agut, who won last year . However, the Spaniard won't play this year as he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Therefore, the top seed is Tomas Martin Etcheverry from Argentina, who has a bye in the first round as all top four seeds, and in the second round, the Argentinian will play against one of the qualifiers or home wild card Filip Misolic.

The 2023 Winston-Salem Open runs from August 20th to 26th and the entry list for the Atp 250 event promises a lot of thrilling action.
Thanks to being placed right ahead of the US Open in the calendar, the Winston-Salem Open usually attracts many tennis players and fans alike, because it's time of the season when players still want to fine-tune their game ahead of the last major of the season.
Last year, Adrian Mannarino won the title in Winston-Salem, and the Frenchman will be back to defend it in 2023. But the competition will be fierce, led by Borna Coric , who won the Cincinnati Masters last year , and he'll want to make sure to keep some of those points to his name in case he fails to defend his title at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters .
Also a couple of experienced Spaniards will play at the 2023 Winston-Salem Open as Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut...

Carlos Alcaraz is beloved among the fans but also his colleagues on the Atp Tour as the Spaniard gets along great with everybody.
Carlos Alcaraz is a very joyful tennis player as he plays the game with a big smile every time he's on the court. For him, it's quite literally a game and you can see it. That's what draws so many people towards him but it's also quite infectious.
He gets along well with all of his colleagues and some of that is simply the way he approaches people. He talked about just trying to be a very good person believing it to be the most important thing. He wants to be remembered as that first and everything else second.
I try to be friendly, warm, get on with everyone. It’s more important to be a good person than anything else. At the end of my career...

Alexander Bublik proved a grass expert once more as he downed Alexander Zverev on home soil at the Halle Open to book his maiden final this year.

Continuing his great form from clay, Zverev managed to advance all the way to the semi-final where he faced Alexander Bublik.
The Kazakh player has had a lot of problems this year as well failing to play good tennis more than once. Roberto Bautista Agut hasn't done much winning this year but he was able to earn his 5th win over Daniil Medvedev in their 7th match.
Daniil Medvedev continued his lacklustre form at the 2023 Halle Open , suffering another surprising defeat following the early exit at the French Open and the recent Den Bosch disappointment . The first set opened with a typical grass match opening of the player's nicely trading breaks.
After they proved to each other that they are beatable, Medvedev and Bautista Agut started to play very dominantly on the serve so we didn't see a single break point chance until the final game of the set. In the final game of the set, Medvedev approached things a bit too loose and the Spaniard ran away with the set.
It was a pretty flawless set by both players for the most part but in the end a bit too loose from Medvedev.

A long-standing record was broken in the first round of Roland Garros on Monday as male Chinese entrants participated in the main draw for the first time since 1937.

Zhang, aged 27, then broke in the fourth game and held his own serve to surge to a 4-1 lead in the second set, after which Lajovic was unable to continue playing.

The two Spaniards met already at the last year's Indian Wells and back then, the younger of the two emerged victorious in two sets. In front of the home crowd in Barcelona, at the Pista Rafa Nadal, Alcaraz wanted to beat the fellow Spaniard again.
Recently, Alcaraz's coach Juan Carlos Ferrero said that he puts too much effort into points which sometimes seems to be lost and the teenager continued to show his incredible passion for the sport also during the third-round match in Barcelona.
The match was a difficult one for the world no. 2 as Bautista Agut proved to be a real challenge. The 35-year-old got the first break in the match, but he couldn't keep his advantage. Alcaraz broke back and he even added one more break...

Carlos Alcaraz has another difficult title defence ahead of him but he started very well at the 2023 Barcelona Open.
Last year, the young Spaniard lifted the trophy at this prestigious Atp 500 tournament and he will try to benefit from the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal once more, to defend his title. Previously, Alcaraz withdrew from the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters but he was back to his best in Barcelona.
In the first round, the 19-year-old took on Nuno Borges from Portugal. The world no. 79 dealt with Ilya Ivashka in the first round, but Alcaraz proved to be too good for Borges in their first H2H meeting on the Atp Tour.
Alcaraz came out firing in the first set. After one hold of serve from the Portuguese player, the world no. 2 was lethal on the return, converting both break points that he had and securing 5-1 lead in the opening set.

From April 17th to 23rd, one of the most prestigious Atp 500 events will be played in Barcelona, Spain and all eyes will be on the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Last year, the Spaniard defeated Pablo Carreno-Busta in the final, but this year, his fellow compatriot was forced to withdraw from the event played at the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona.
The tournament was also marked by the absence of Rafael Nadal who withdrew from the tournament due to insufficient preparation. Therefore, the first-seeded Alcaraz may have an easier route to the title on his title defence as he will start against Ilya Ivashka or Nuno Borges in the second round of the tournament.

Monte Carlo (Monaco), April 13 (Ians) Daniil Medvedev continued his impressive form as the third seed made a winning start to his Monte-Carlo Masters 2023 campaign, beating dangerous free-hitting Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round of Atp Masters 1000 event.
Medvedev was dialled in from the start of his first clay-court match of the year. He moved into an early 3-0 lead with the help of some delightful early touches at the net and he stayed typically relentless from the baseline throughout to seal an 89-minute victory on Wednesday.
“Every match is a struggle (on clay), but I have had some good matches on clay. I managed to play well against a very strong player on clay. Lorenzo is very strong. Here in Monte-Carlo there are a lot of Italians in the crowd, but a lot of French also, so it was fun to play, and I am happy...

Monte-Carlo, April 12 (Ians) Fourth-seeded Casper Ruud advanced here on Wednesday with a 7-5, 7-6(1) win over Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, the first clay-court Masters’ event of the season.
The Norwegian had to save one set point when trailing 5-4 in the second set and failed to serve for the match at 6-5, while being dominant in the tiebreak to wrap up his victory in two hours and 15 minutes, reports Xinhua.
“It is never easy to start at a new tournament and against a player I have lost to before,” said Ruud, who had lost three of four previous head-to-head meetings with the world No. 31, as the most recent one came at the Miami Masters last month.
“I was a bit sloppy and didn’t take my chances. Sometimes it is a little tricky playing someone you recently lost to, like ‘Not again’, but in this case,...

Monte Carlo, April 11 (Ians) Alexander Zverev of Germany came from one set down to overcome Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round at the Atp Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday.
The former world No.2 cracked his right ankle at the French Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal last year and had never played on the red muddy surface, reports Xinhua.
It took the 13th seed one hour and 58 minutes, during which he fired 21 winners to pass through Bublik to secure his first victory over the world no. 53 in their three head-to-head meetings.
“It felt awful at times to be honest, but he made me feel awful,” said Zverev. “Tactically he played well, he didn’t let me play my game at all. He didn’t let me have my rhythm and he almost won the match, just a few points here and there.”
“I have had two weeks of practise now.

Alexander Zverev had to play a challenging first-round match at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters against Alexander Bublik.
Almost a year ago, everything changed for Zverev when he suffered from probably the worst injury in his career. Now, the German is back to the red dirt as he kicked off his campaign at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and even when he started training on clay again, he joked about his relationship with the surface.
In the first set of the match, Zverev couldn't really find his top game but what was important was the fact that Bublik played exceptionally. The Kazakh hit 16 winners and made only three unforced errors and his serve was on fire too.
After breaking his opponent twice and being broken just once, Bublik won the first set 6-3 and looked to upset the 13th seed. But Zverev started strong in the second set.

Dominic Thiem played some solid tennis at the 2023 Estoril Open but it was not enough to get past the quarterfinal stages.
In the first two rounds of the tournament, the Austrian found his firing power again and recorded two impressive victories. However, in the quarterfinals, Thiem took on Quentin Halys from France, ranked 80th on the Atp Tour.
Despite his ranking suggesting otherwise, the Frenchman has been in a great form recently, beating the likes of Alex de Minaur and Roberto Bautista Agut over the past few weeks. In Estoril, he wanted to record yet another impressive win, this time over the former world no. 3.
And Halys started much better than Thiem in the firs set. Except for a couple of occasions, players fought for almost every game in the first set and both had multiple opportunities to go into the lead.

Dominic Thiem has been struggling in the 2023 season but he's back to his best at the Estoril Open.
In the first round of the competition, the experienced Austrian was a set and a break down to his compatriot Sebastian Ofner, but eventually turned the match around. In the second round, Thiem was set to meet even stronger opponent, the eighth-seeded Ben Shelton from the United States.
The young American played his first-ever clay-court match in Estoril as he defeated Constant Lestienne in the first round. Previously, the two second-round protagonists never met before but Thiem wanted to use his clay-court qualities to beat Shelton.
From start to finish, Thiem played much better tennis while his opponent struggled to find momentum. Shelton got off to a good start after he broke the Austrian and led 2-0 in the first set, but the rest of the opening set was a one-man story.

The 2023 Estoril Open is held from April 3rd to 9th and the draw hints that it will be another spectacular event.
If the Atp tournaments were rated based on their location, the 2023 Estoril Open would surely be a Grand Slam. However, that's not the case but the Atp 250 event, played at the Clube de Ténis do Estoril, surely doesn't mind as it still attracts a very solid field of players every year.
In 2022, young Argentinian Sebastian Baez defeated Frances Tiafoe in the final to become the seventh different champion of this young event, which was founded in 2015. This year, he returns to defend his title but the competition is very fierce as all players in the draw will be fighting for their share of the prize money and points.
