Conversations with Spy Kids helmer Robert Rodriguez, Sundance Film Festival curators Ana Souza and Diana Sánchez Maciel, and 24 short films are among the programming slated for this year’s InFocus: Latinx & Hispanic Cinema Film Festival.
Taking place Sept. 22-23 at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, the 2023 edition of NewFilmmakers Los Angeles’ annual fest will feature four short programs, with audience Q&a sessions and four live panels, alongside a showcase of 24 short films from narrative live action to documentary and animated film.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be back in 2023 with filmmakers representing 12 countries at the Festival,” said Nfmla programming director Bojana Sandic and executive director and co-founder Larry Laboe in a joint statement. “It really is a testament to the talent that exists on a global scale and reflects our essential goal of creating a truly inclusive program. When everyone is represented, our industry can thrive.

"I used to tell her, don't go to the river, but she used to go anyways." Black Mandala has revealed a new English dub trailer for an indie horror film from Panama called The Sacrifice, made by filmmaker Alberto Serra. The folk horror movie originally premiered at genre festivals back in 2018, and it already opened in a few Latin American countries last year. The horror film was officially selected at Curtas Film Fest (Spain); Cinefantasy (Brazil); and Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre (Argentina). Two sisters have to fight for survival after arriving to a farm owned by their grandmother, an elderly woman stuck in a curse that has been consuming her for years. A horror story based on legends from all over Latin America, though it's made in Panama. Starring Ana Grethel Solís, Freddy D'Elia, Stella Lauri, Nick Romano, and Isabella Sierra. This dub doesn't seem that good, but at least...

[This story contains major spoilers for The Last of Us season one finale, “Look for the Light.”]
The Last of Us showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann tackled some of the burning questions raised by the first season finale of their acclaimed HBO drama series, “Look for the Light,” which they co-wrote and Ali Abbasi directed. The co-creators also teased some of their thinking about season two, when speaking during an embargoed press conference with reporters last week:
— On Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) decision to execute the Fireflies who wanted to use Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to make a potential pandemic cure, a procedure he learned would kill her in the process: “When you love something unconditionally, logic goes out the window and you will do really horrible things to protect the ones you love,” Mazin says. “And there’s a lot of examples worldwide of this happening all the time. So for us it was just like,...

Fans who have been clamoring for the return of Keanu Reeves as Constantine can take a deep breath of relief because the sequel announced last fall has not been canned in the wake of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new plans for the DC Universe. Reeves first played the character of John Constantine in the 2005 cult-hit "Constantine" from director Francis Lawrence. In the years that followed, Reeves' star only got hotter, and Lawrence went on to direct hugely successful projects like "I Am Legend" and the latter three films in "The Hunger Games" series.
The Constantine character has been played multiple times across a variety of mediums over the years, and plenty of folks have a soft spot for Reeves' take. However, after big changes like Henry Cavill not returning as Superman and the scrapping of the already-completed "Batgirl" film, the fate of the future of "Constantine 2" looked grim.

Former DC Films head Walter Hamada has kicked off the new year with the launch of his new production banner, 18hz Productions, and is making key hires.
Nathan Samdahl, the former Paramount executive who was instrumental in making the horror hit Smile, will act as the company’s senior vp, while Nick Romano has been tapped as creative executive.
Hamada transitioned to the world of producing late last year after more than 15 years in the studio trenches of Warner Bros. and New Line, overseeing the making of horror and superhero movies such as It and Aquaman. In November, his fledgling company signed an exclusive, multi-year production deal with Paramount to spearhead the studio’s mainstream horror movies. It has the goal of releasing several low-to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.

Humphrey Bogart is practically the face of film noir. While not quite a genre, the very flexible film movement reflected America's malaise following the Great Depression and eventually World War II. There was a grimness and heightened sense of realism to the movies, often made on lower budgets and with a documentary intensity. Even when the movies ended happily, as many did, the feelings unearthed in the telling of the story would be left unresolved to gnaw at viewers indefinitely.
Bogart, the Broadway actor turned B-movie character actor turned one of the biggest stars in the world, fit the mood perfectly. His scars and trademark lisp separated him from his more conventionally beautiful peers and gave him a natural feel for the hardboiled material. His way with dialogue — spat out with ferocity or tenderness — colored the films as well. His cinematic stature, helped by his refusal to do television, also...

The first movie to directly confront McCarthyism! Or so said the editorials touting this ‘Long-Awaited Screen Event’ in which ‘Bette Davis Hits the Screen in a Cyclone of Dramatic Fury!’ The storm of the title was based on a real activist in Oklahoma who lost her job for promoting equal rights. Bette’s polite librarian is victimized by small-minded civic types; a subplot depicts the traumatic reaction of one of her patrons, a child expected to despise her as a traitor to the country. Daniel Taradash’s movie is an excellent starting point to discuss the thorny dramatic subgenre of liberal social issue movies.

In Panama to shoot “The Stars at Noon,” French auteur Claire Denis spoke at an Iff Panama fest panel about shooting the film in Panama and her hallmark “instinctive” filmmaking.
With her were her two male actors, lead Joe Alwyn (“The Favorite”) and rising Panamanian thesp and former wrestler Nick Romano (“Kimura”), who plays a key secondary role. The panel was moderated by Iff Panama festival director Pituka Ortega Heilbron.
Based on the eponymous novel by Denis Johnson, “The Stars at Noon” is set in 1984 Nicaragua during the Sandinista-led revolution as it relates the unlikely romance between an enigmatic Englishman (Alwyn) and a willful American journalist, played by Margaret Qualley who’s just received great reviews for her performance in Netflix series “The Maid.” The two lovers are soon caught up in a perilous web of lies and conspiracies and forced to flee the country.

Throughout the pandemic that has ravaged Central America, the region’s most prominent film event, the Panama International Film Festival (Iff Panama), has forged on virtually in its continued bid to bolster local projects and talent.
To mark its 10th anniversary this year, a smaller hybrid edition kicks off on Dec. 3 with “Plaza Catedral,” Panama’s submission to the Oscars, and wraps Dec. 5 with Michel Franco’s “Sundown,” starring Tim Roth, which competed for the Golden Lion at Venice.
“We couldn’t pass up celebrating our 10th anniversary, even if it were on a smaller scale this year,” said festival director Pituka Ortega Heilbron, who cites encouragement from the international and local industry as key reasons to push onward, notwithstanding the setbacks from the pandemic.
“We’re still very much in the mind of the industry, especially Central America,” she asserted, pointing out that two films spawned by the festival’s rough cuts sidebar,...
