Activision almost let Sledgehammer make Advanced Warfare 2 before going back to WWII.
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none
Turns out that Activision either listened to their fans, or the fact Infinite Warfare sales were not too great, and canned an early bid for Advanced Warfare 2. According to Activision, Cod WWII developers Sledgehammer Games had proposed the idea of making Advanced Warfare 2, but the publisher instead wanted to go back to WWII.
"We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care, and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II."
It isn’t mentioned if the idea was actually canned, or if they simply just sent them straight to WWII instead, but the idea seemed to work. Cod WWII has already surpassed sales targets of Infinite Warfare and is on track to quickly sell more units than the previous installment.

A new trailer for Call of Duty: WWII's story has just emerged and it may be the best they've ever done.
Something you don't hear too often is, "Wow, the story in Call of Duty Insert Name Here was incredible.". It's usually more about the gameplay than it ever is about the story. Sledgehammer Games decided to remedy that with a story trailer for Call of Duty: WWII that is sure to leave jaws dropped.
There is a lot to love about this trailer for Call of Duty: WWII. First off, the graphics are sensational. The textures of the scenery and the character models are like something from a movie. Second, Sledgehammer must have cleared out the writer's room and brought in people who worked on any number of World War II movies and had them write the screenplay. If this trailer is any indication, the story for Call of...

It’s that time of the year again and another Call of Duty title is launching in just a couple months. With many fans unimpressed with Infinity Ward’s latest entry Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, there seems to be a lot of pressure on the franchise to up the ante this year and deliver a Call of Duty experience that fans can be proud of. Thus, Sledgehammer Games is bringing us back to the franchises historic roots of the second world war. Call of Duty: WWII aims to bring back the grittiness of war and showcase some historically accurate weaponry into this long running franchise. I got to play the beta over the past two weekends (first on PS4) and established a good feel for how the game will play upon release. Even though I did enjoy most of it, not much has changed with this Fps. Let’s...

“Embark on a chilling and mysterious journey through a snowy Bavarian village in Mittelburg, Germany, as they attempt to recover priceless works of art stolen by the Axis powers in World War II.”
The trailer leaked a bit early somehow and developer Sledgehammer Games wasn't too happy about it, but now that it has been officially revealed we can talk about it again. The trailer and information comes as Activision hosted the team at San Diego Comic Con earlier today.
“This village holds a shadowy secret key to an unimaginable and monstrous power,” Activision said in a release. “Nothing is as it seems in this zombies horror, as a dark and sinister plot unfolds to unleash an invincible Nazi army of the dead.”
The new content will star Ving Rhames as Jefferson Potts, David Tennant as Drostan Hynd, Elodie Yung as Olivia Durant, Katheryn Winnick as Marie Fischer and Udo Kier...

At last, Call of Duty: WWII developer Sledgehammer Games has pulled back the blood-stained curtain on the shooter’s Nazi Zombies mode, revealing a horde of festering undead just waiting to be peppered with bullets.
For those that caught wind of the leaked trailer earlier this week, the official one (above) shown today at the San Diego Comic-Con contains much of the same footage, though there are a few notable differences. For starters, the Army of the Dead title that flashed up on screen at the conclusion of the leaked version has been replaced with the simpler, but no less self-explanatory, Nazi Zombies logo, a name that’s sure to delight fans of the original maps from Call of Duty: World at War.

Keeping secrets is never easy, especially when you have potentially thousands of people doing their best to prematurely uncover them. Take Call of Duty: WWII, for example, which has millions of fans eagerly awaiting its arrival later this year. With such a large player base to contend with, it’s inevitable that some of them will go digging in the right place at the right time.
That couldn’t be truer than it is today, as a recent leak (via Bloody-Disgusting) has outed the shooter’s Zombies mode ahead of schedule. Developer Sledgehammer Games will no doubt be miffed by the leak, but what perhaps makes this particular discovery sting just that little bit more is the date pegged to its official announcement.

Aside from the switch back to a World War II setting, there are plenty of changes to be found in Call of Duty: WWII. For starters, the game’s single-player campaign is swapping regenerating health for a health bar and the multiplayer mode is switching to defined classes, dubbed ‘divisions.’ One of the more interesting additions though comes in the form of the game’s Headquarters mode, which up until now, has remained largely under wraps.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey has finally shed some light on the new mode, which will allow 48 players to engage with each other in a shared, online social space. When you first boot up the game’s multiplayer, you’ll immediately jump into Headquarters, which takes place three days after the Allied Invasion on Normandy beach.

Call of Duty may be returning to its World War II roots, but Activision’s newest entry in the long-running franchise is anything but old. Call of Duty: WWII (which is actually its official name) turns back the clock, eschewing many of the futuristic weapons, exosuits, and robot companions that recent entries have been built around. Instead, developer Sledgehammer Games is aiming to create a more visceral and authentic experience this time around, and it starts with a few notable changes to the series’ core mechanics.
First off, no more regenerating health (at least in the single-player campaign). Instead, Sledgehammer is returning back to the tried-and-true ‘health bar.’ Also, in an effort to lend a more realistic tone, the unlimited sprint mechanic from both Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare has been ditched, requiring players to wait a short period of time before they can resume running.
These changes might seem small in nature,...

Sony’s breathless E3 2017 presser continues apace, and staying true to tradition, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games have now lifted the lid on Call of Duty: WWII‘s multiplayer component, all the while confirming a private beta test for PS4 that will get going on August 25th.

Activision’s official site mentions that the beta test will launch for PS4 first, which tells us that it’ll likely expand – or indeed switch over – to Xbox One and PC shortly after its debut in August. One of the most surprising games of E3 2016, Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, will not be on stage this year when Sony presents their wares. Read Kojima's tweet below and see if you can decipher it. Plus, find out when you can see the man, himself, live and in person at E3!

Developer Sledgehammer Games has confirmed the single-player component of Call of Duty: WWII will feature a “global cast” of men, women, and children fighting on both sides of the conflict.
Word comes by way of GamesRadar, who caught up with the studio’s co-founder Michael Condrey to talk all things WWII and, in particular, its “emotional” campaign – a campaign that will do away with auto-regenerating health as we know it. It was here that Condrey reaffirmed Sledgehammer’s plan to tell most of its story through the lens of Red Daniels, but it seems players will also have the chance to step into the grubby boots of Russo, a French Resistance woman to be voiced by Jeannie Rousseau.
Beyond that, little is known about the full voice cast for Call of Duty: WWII, but it’s worth noting that previous entries in the franchise have attracted top-tier Hollywood talent including Gary Oldman,...

Activision’s annual shooter series is going back to its roots for 2017’s entry, this we already know, but what we’ve yet to see – until now, at least – is to just what lengths developer Sledgehammer Games is going to in order to make the most authentic historical shooter ever with Call of Duty: WWII. A new featurette video released by the studio today features various members of the development team documenting their involvement with the series’ return to World War II and their desire to make this the most definitive video game portrayal of humanity’s darkest hour.
Going hand in hand with that strong statement of intent, Sledgehammer says that WWII‘s story aims to instil in its players a sense of camaraderie that those involved in the real event would have nurtured throughout its six-year duration, a theme that will not only ring true via dialogue and narrative but also art style.

Since it was first introduced via Punch-Out in ’83, the concept of regenerating health has become a tried-and-tested hallmark of the video game industry, and if there’s one franchise that embraces the game mechanic wholeheartedly, it’s Call of Duty. In the heat of battle, players simply have to avoid taking damage for a set amount of time and voila, your in-game avatar is right as rain.
That all changes with the launch of Call of Duty: WWII though, with developer Sledgehammer Games revealing that, in an effort to add a heightened sense of realism, players will be required to limp over to their nearby medic when their health runs low. The same rule applies to ammunition; once that stash of bullets is gone, you’ll have to call upon your fellow squadmates for help.
Glen Schofield, co-founder of Sledgehammer, offered up some context in a recent interview with Polygon,...

It’s been roughly a decade since Call of Duty breached the battlefronts of the historic World Wars, but with the upcoming release of Call of Duty: WWII, that’s all about to change.
Set for release on November 3rd, 2017, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games gave us an idea of what to expect earlier today, satiating fans with a realistic, gritty depiction of war. Suffice to say, the bombast of previous titles has been left well behind.
Though they obviously didn’t reveal too much – saving a lot of the juiciest details for E3, no doubt – here are 7 key things we learned from Activision’s presentation.
You’re Playing As A Young Texan Man
You’ll play as 19-year-old Private Red Daniels in WWII, a young boy from Texas who says goodbye to his family and is plunged into the heart of war.

Though the multiplayer reveal has been penciled in for E3 2017 in June, the first details on Call of Duty: WWII‘s online component are beginning to surface in the wake of Activision’s grand reveal event.
One tidbit that has caught everyone’s attention is Headquarters, a digital haven designed in such a way that it allows players to socialize while off the battlefield. It’s a feature that ought to sound familiar for those Guardians that have spent the past two years and change dropping in and out of Destiny‘s Tower, and given how successful Bungie’s shared-world shooter has turned out to be, it’s small wonder why Activision have decided to cherry-pick said social space and integrate it into the Call of Duty universe.

Last week we learned of a brand-new Call of Duty game set in World War II, today we get our first look at the game! Take a look!
Activision and Sledgehammer Games took a moment from their busy schedule, developing their latest Call of Duty game, to give the fans a glimpse at what they've been working on. Check out the first trailer for Call of Duty: WWII, featuring the devilishly handsome Josh Duhamel!
They may be a long way from Texas, but Sledgehammer Games, who previously developed Advanced Warfare in 2014, has definitely transported the Call of Duty franchise a long way from 2003. I loved the opening shot on Normandy. Everything from the water to the hazy weather is stunningly beautiful, in a morbid way. Plus, it looks like the tank warfare is going to be pretty epic.

Long before Call of Duty evolved into the biggest name in gaming, Activision’s Fps juggernaut cut its teeth on PC platforms, when earlier installments in the series took place during the throes of World War II. That all changed with the release of Infinity Ward’s groundbreaking Modern Warfare and, with the exception of Treyarch’s World at War, each new entry in the franchise has ventured further and further into the future, introducing drones, robots, and even rocket packs along the way. That all changes with the launch of Call of Duty: WWII.
Headed up by Sledgehammer Games, the creative minds behind Advanced Warfare and the canned Fog of War – the latter was a scrapped, third-person Cod prototype set against the fiery cauldron of the Vietnam War – Call of Duty: WWII promises a breathtaking experience rooted in one of, if not the most monumental conflicts in human history.

The Call of Duty franchise is going back to where it all began, World War II. Come inside to find out when you can see the full reveal!
Back in 2003, Activision released the first Call of Duty. The quality was nowhere near what has become, but it was still the catalyst for what would become a massive franchise hit. Now, after years of future warfare, Activision is sending the franchise back to the war that started it all, with Call of Duty: WWII.
As of now, we don't have much more information to go off of, but Activision and Sledgehammer Games will be changing that very soon.
On Wednesday, April 26, at 10am Pst/1pm Est, the developers and publishers of Call of Duty: WWII will be taking the stage for their Worldwide Reveal Livestream! You will be able to watch the stream by going to the Call of Duty website or by simply clicking here.

Call of Duty: WWII is real.
Following a series of leaks and unofficial promos, Activision and developer Sledgehammer Games cut through the noise today to confirm the shooter’s period setting, along with a worldwide reveal event for Wednesday, April 26th. The showcase will be livestreamed, too, and you’ll be able to tune in at 10am Pt/1pm Et.
Aside from some appropriately moody artwork – artwork that features a dishevelled soldier and his thousand-yard stare – no further details were disclosed at the time of writing, only that Activision is poised to lift the curtain on Call of Duty: WWII in a few days’ time. Will you be tuning in?

After spending the last few years in the future, Call of Duty looks to head back to the past in 2017. If leaked marketing material is to be believed, the popular franchise will indeed be returning to Europe and Asia for the simply titled Call of Duty: WWII.
Coming courtesy of YouTuber “TheFamilyVideoGamers,” the leaked material includes a banner, as well as several different box art designs. The banner, which can be seen above, appears to depict the D-Day Normandy landing. I think according to American law, every game based around World War II has to feature this historic event in some capacity.
The promotional box arts created for Call of Duty: WWII are a little more interesting. All of them appear to be based around, again, the D-Day invasion, but there’s a little more creativity at work. If nothing else, they’re a welcome change from the past few CoD cover designs,...

Despite going on to become the best-selling game of 2016 in the United States, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare “wasn’t the success” Activision envisioned.
As part of the publisher’s recent earnings call, Activision touched base on the status of its flagship Fps series, noting that the far-future setting of Infinite Warfare “didn’t resonate [with players]” as expected. This year’s Call of Duty will subsequently steer the franchise “back to its roots,” where “traditional combat will once again take center stage” in lieu of space combat and futuristic weaponry.
Per the publisher’s three-tier development cycle, Sledgehammer Games has been elected at the helm for Call of Duty 2017, and early reports claim the Advanced Warfare dev is planning to circle back to the 20th century – World War II, in all likelihood – for the...

Activision once considered a pitch that would have taken its lucrative Call of Duty franchise to Ancient Rome.
In a report collated by GamesRadar, the outlet reveals that Activision had ordered Vicarious Visions – best known for its work across Skylanders, Guitar Hero and, soon, the Crash Bandicoot PS4 remaster – to take the reins on Call of Duty: Roman Wars.
Inspired by Julius Caesar’s Commentarii de Bello Gallico (Commentary on the Gallic War), a firsthand account of the various wars Caesar’s 10th legion waged against a string of Gallic adversaries, sources close to GamesRadar confirm that a prototype was hatched for Roman Wars, comprised of a single level set during the Battle of Alesia that took place in 52 BC.
Similar to Modern Warfare and World of War, Vicarious aimed to weave a single-player campaign that would chronicle the adventures of multiple protagonists, revealing that players “were going to play a lead centurion,...

It’s official: Infinity Ward will take point for the as-yet-untitled Call of Duty 2016.
Activision Blizzard made the news official during a fourth-quarter financial report earlier today – which also heralded confirmation of Destiny 2 – with Infinity Ward expressing its own excitement to showcase the latest entry in the juggernaut series.

With only a confirmation that Infinity Ward is taking the reins, the jury’s still out on what Call of Duty 2016 will be. Common logic would dictate that the developer is crafting a sequel to 2013’s Ghosts, though it’d be foolish to rule out a sequel or potential reboot of the Modern Warfare sub-series.

As promised, Activision has lifted the curtain on the first very gameplay clip for this year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III, dragging the blistering action that has become synonymous with the franchise into a dark and cybernetic future – one in which technology is king.
The year is 2056. Mankind, having harnessed the power of bleeding-edge tech, has revolutionzed the battlefield and its inhabitants by blurring the line between man and machine. Such an approach has essentially transformed humans into weapons for hire, incorporating tech such as retina implants, DNA upgrades and robotic, superpowered limbs. As such, fans of the blockbuster series can expect a great many changes to the gameplay set-up of Call of Duty, as Treyarch – taking the reigns off of Sledgehammer Games following Advanced Warfare – look to push the series further into the future.

Activision and Sledgehammer are continuing to support Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare with the release of the shooter’s second expansion pack, Ascendence, which is due to make its debut on Xbox platforms on March 31.
As the bombastic trailer above attests, this bundle will herald four all-new multiplayer maps in the form of Perplex, Chop Shop, Climate and the Mount Rushmore-set Site 244. Much like Havoc before it, this Dlc is set to include new weaponry as well, not to mention the introduction of the popular grapple mechanic into the game’s multiplayer mode.
Alongside these is a brand new map for Advanced Warfare‘s Zombies Mode. On this occasion, players will be tasked with surviving waves of undead on the outskirts of an Atlas facility. With brute and armored zombies scrambling for your brains, it looks to be the perfect set-up for an entertaining, if nailbiting affair.

Sledgehammer's adding 15 new Prestige levels to Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare, with purple armour unlocked on completion...
If you've played Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare to death already, but hankering for a new challenge within it, there's good news.
Developer Sledgehammer Games has announced that it's adding 15 new Prestige levels to its shooter sequel.
Completing each level will unlock a new Elite weapon (with names like Mors Silver Bullet and Imr Thunder Tusk), while completing all 15 prestiges will unlock some Grand Master Prestige Character Gear.
Essentially, it's purple, highly ornate, and looks like the kind of thing Liberace would have worn if he was really good at first-person shooters.
I mean, just look at it:
Grand Master Prestige is out this month. You can see high-resolution versions of all the levels and loot on offer at Sledgehammer's blog. Until then, here's a (very) quick tour of what's in store.

As per Microsoft’s exclusivity deal with Activison, each and every Dlc pack that arrives for Call of Duty makes its console debut on Xbox platforms first before appearing elsewhere. And Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare proved to be no different, with the shooter’s maiden expansion, Havoc, already available on Xbox One and Xbox 360, the publisher has detailed when the add-on will arrive for PC and PlayStation systems.
According to Activision, that date has been pegged as Thursday, February 26, where four all-new multiplayer maps along with Sledgehammer Games’ futuristic take on the classic Zombies Mode will become available. Much like Dlc packs of old, Havoc will be available to download day and date for those season pass holders, whereas the add-on can be picked up as a standalone purchase for $15.
