‘Monolith’ Review: Minimalist Horror Movie Starring Lily Sullivan Effectively Creeps Under Your Skin
The podcasting world was born out of mystery. Beginning with early hits like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, Serial, and Lore, the genre exploded with similar shows dedicated to shining a fresh light on the strange occurrences lurking just beneath our everyday line of sight. But can we always trust what we hear? No matter how diligent the research or objective the source, each story has been filtered through the biases and motivations of the human voice behind the mic. Investigating for the purpose of entertainment adds another element of deception. What pieces of the story have been embellished or omitted to ensure a satisfying arc? It’s no wonder faith in the media has sunk to a shocking low.
Director Matt Vesely plays with these concepts in his feature film debut Monolith, a minimalist sci-fi thriller that pulls back the curtain of journalistic creation. Based on a harrowing script by Lucy Campbell,...

Investigating mysterious bricks that have appeared to people around the world in dire times, a disgraced podcaster discovers that she may become part of the story she's covering in the new movie Monolith.
A paranoia-fueled sci-if horror film that wriggles under your skin and worms its way into your subconscious, Monolith is now playing in theaters and on digital via Well Go USA, and Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with star Lily Sullivan (who delivers a powerhouse performance) and director Matt Vesely in a new video interview to discuss the making of Monolith, including the intriguing script by Lucy Campbell, the ambitious performance by Sullivan, the story's immersive incorporation of audio elements, filming in an isolated (and strikingly post-modern) setting, and keeping the audience guessing as the layers of a potential conspiracy are peeled back.

The suffocation of isolation is physical and metaphorical in Matt Vesely's "Monolith," a single-location thriller about the dubious nature of podcast journalism. At the core of Lucy Campbell's screenplay is a question about what anyone will believe in times of dire need and the ease with which theoretical events spread like infections. True crime shadiness is challenged once more as show hosts doctor facts to fit their storytelling methods, pointing towards the ickiness of profiting from another Dahmer or Bundy special. It's not exactly the most exciting inspection of human desires, but hinges on a nifty mechanic that sells an experience resting on a lone performer's shoulders from the comfort of her audio editing station.

There’s a good movie to be made about podcasts that traffic in unsolved mysteries where hosts rank cliffhangers and that hiccuping dramatic cadence over journalism. For half of its running time, the Australian thriller “Monolith” seems like it might be that movie. But the film, a debut feature from director Matt Vesely and screenwriter Lucy Campbell, falls sway to the clickbait tropes it intends to send up: red herrings, a tone of suffocating gloom and a desperation to keep the audience on the hook.
The sole actor on screen is Lily Sullivan, playing an unnamed Interviewer and audio ne’er do well who has recently fallen into disgrace over a j’accuse gone wrong. (Her inbox is bricked up with outraged emails.) Doxxed out of her home, she sets up a recording studio in her parents’ modernist mansion — the type with eerie floor-to-ceiling windows and so much nothingness outside...

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival isn’t messing around.
The official lineup has just been revealed and it’s a banger, starting off with a special screening of Evil Dead Rise!
In addition, they have several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky!
“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. Some of them introduce new, terrifying lore to the canon of suburban horror movies, some will worm around in your brain like thoughts you can’t shake, but all of them will make you...
