After the Disney annual shareholder meeting, Bob Iger went on a victory tour with some interviews. During the Q&a and proposal segments of the shareholder meeting, the same message came up a couple of times about Disney’s political leanings and messaging choices in entertainment. Then, on CNBC, an interview question about Disney being “woke” was brought up.
Here’s how Bob Iger responded:
..the term woke is thrown around rather liberally, no pun intended in that regard. I think a lot of people don’t even understand really what it means.”
According to Merriam-Webster, the term “woke” means to be “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)”
Dictionary.com defines “woke” as “having or marked by an active awareness of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those involving the treatment of ethnic, racial, or sexual minorities.”

In 1958, Esquire published “A Great Day in Harlem,” a photo taken by Art Kane of 57 jazz musicians ranging from Thelonious Monk to Coleman Hawkins gathered together on a New York City stoop. In an homage to that historic picture, on June 5, 2022, Nickelodeon Animation and Paramount Pictures organized “A Great Day in Animation,” which features 54 Black professionals working in animation today. Taken by Randy Shropshire with Jeff Vespa as production lead and obtained exclusively by Variety, the photo is above.
Though Nickelodeon and Paramount put the event together and hosted it on the Paramount backlot, “A Great Day in Animation” includes artists from all across the industry. The idea for the photo came from Marlon West, a visual effects supervisor for Disney whose credits include “The Lion King,” “Encanto” and the upcoming Disney+ series “Iwájú.” For decades, West has been moved by “A Great Day in Harlem,” as well as Jean Bach...

Exclusive: The Gotham Group has launched an Nft-focused Emerging Technologies department, with the Hollywood management and production company tapping longtime manager Matt Shichtman to run it, while elevating him to partner.
The division already has a first project, with production underway on the adult animated series Alien to Me. It will be fully Web3 with only those that purchase NFTs getting access to the series, which hails from Shichtman-repped comedian and digital artist Connor Kerrigan and Melbourne-based animation studio Pixel’s Andrew Goldsmith and Monique Mulcahy.
“While studios have had considerable success over the past decade consolidating market power, Web3 has moved swiftly in the opposite direction, decentralizing networks, building grassroots communities, increasing transaction speeds, decreasing fees, and pushing towards carbon neutrality, a goal many blockchains have now achieved,” Shichtman said. “With over $25 billion in Nft sales in 2021, we couldn’t be more excited to leverage the power this new...

The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, will host a Zoom webinar Wednesday night to offer tips to recent college graduates on breaking into the animation industry during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Guild officials say the animation business has been “thriving” during the pandemic, while most other sectors of the industry have been completely shut down. “Over the last two weeks, animation studios and productions, including Bento Box, Disney TV, Cartoon Network and Rick & Morty have posted hiring notices,” the guild told Deadline.
“The coronavirus has affected recent graduates tremendously, not only robbing them of the traditions that mark the completion of a degree but making the transition into the workforce more challenging,” the guild said. “Many of the resources available to them in the past – portfolio reviews, student galleries, recruiting events – have been cancelled. This webinar will provide much-needed insights as graduates prepare to start their careers in the field of animation.
