American Idol returned this week with a two-night, three-hour premiere for season 14, and the talent has been out in full force. On Wednesday, we were treated to my favorite singer so far, Emily Brooke, along with other great voices from the likes of Michael Simeon, Cameron Bedell and Riley Bria.
Thursday night's episode continued with the Nashville auditions, and the judges also traveled to Kansas City to hear contestants from the Idol Bus Tour auditions. Has anyone noticed that there are a lot of big personalities this year, especially from the advancing singers? Maybe after Sam Woolf and Alex Preston last year, the producers didn't want singers as timid as them.

"American Idol" returned on Wednesday (January 7) night to somewhat tepid ratings and with a one-hour episode that was almost entirely devoid of likely breakout talent. Fox posted the first episode online for critics and then wisely posted the second, which is airing tonight. The move was wise because, as you'll soon see, Thursday's episode is much, much better. There are three or four contestants who appeared on Thursday's episode and seem like plausible Finalists. So click through and follow along as I recap the highlights and lowlights. [Key Warning: It turned out yesterday that the Fox-provided screener for the premiere wasn't exactly what aired. It was mostly what aired, but apparently I saw some singing viewers didn't get. And vice versa. So take this recap, especially the time-code, with a grain of salt. Hopefully the people I liked will make it to air.] 00:00:00 Is it my screener or are we starting with some righteous "Inception"-style bass? I guess that adds some drama to the reminder that "Idol" makes stars and that it's about the kids, not gimmicks or judges. But really, it's making me believe that "Idol" is all about the bass. 00:02:00 We're beginning again in Nashville. The judges want to find a superstar.

This just in: It might be time for Blake Shelton and Adam Levine to sit out a cycle of The Voice.
Seven seasons in, the show has unearthed a coach so sincere, so charming, so deeply and beautifully connected to the music, that it’s hard to imagine any sane contestant from any genre not gravitating toward him. I speak, of course, of Pharrell Williams, and thanks to my penchant for live-Tweeting reality competition series, I know I’m not alone.

American Idol returned on Wednesday with Caleb Johnson, Jena Irene and Alex Preston battling it out for a spot in the finals next week, while celebrating the singing competition’s 500th episode.
American Idol Recap
Before the Idol hopefuls took the stage, the program featured a montage of some of the show’s greatest moments over the season, which included flashbacks to Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken and even William Hung. Past winners Phillip Phillips, David Cook, Kris Allen, Candice Glover, Lee DeWyze, Fantasia Barrino, Scotty McCreery, and Jordin Sparks all offered their thanks via taped video messages.
Singing “Never Tear Us Apart” by Inxs, chosen by Randy Jackson, Caleb Johnson powered through despite a case of bronchitis and “small vocal cord” hemorrhage. All of the judges agreed that the mentor had selected a good song for Johnson and that despite the setbacks, the singer did a more than commendable job.

"I think I made the right decision. I was prepared for one person to leave," Jena Irene Asciutto told People. "I thought, 'It is going to be even more nerve-racking next week because we're going to have two people going home out of five.' That's almost half."
Asciutto says she wasn't happy...

This afternoon, I did a strange thing. I retweeted Ryan Seacrest. But how could I not? Something happens tonight on Idol that I've never seen happen in all the years... #IdolTwist — Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest) May 1, 2014 I mean... Isn't your interest piqued? Mine sure is. The problem: What could he possibly be referring to that he could already know about? He could know that tonight's result is shocking, but he couldn't know how anybody might react. So could he just be referring to, I dunno, a particularly brazen Ford commercial? Or somebody random dueling with Keith Urban? Yup. After Ryan Seacrest's tweet, Thursday's (May 1) "American Idol" results show is sure to be disappointing. Way to raise expectations, Ryan! Full live-blog after the break... 9:00 p.m. Et. Carrying over the momentum from his tweet, Ryan Seacrest repeats that something unprecedented is coming and warns us that there is a "shocking twist.

Last night's show opened with each Idol revealing his or her celebrity crush. Sam digs Ariana Grande, Jessica loves Jensen Ackles (because of course she watches Supernatural), and somehow Caleb loves Rose McGowan. I’m legitimately tickled by that. Alex has a crush on Zooey Deschanel, and then wouldn’t you know it, there she is to start the show! Alex, Ryan, and Zooey hang out onstage together for a good long awkward moment that none of them are enjoying. Truly, This is American Idol.Tonight’s guest mentor is Jason Mraz, who does a terrific job throughout. He embodies the showmanship that our top five mostly lacks, and he’s able to give them some helpful hints on working the crowd and faking charisma. Plus, he has lovely arms. Jason Mraz is my celebrity crush, I’m not gonna lie to you. Alex Preston “Sweater Weather” by The NeighborhoodJason...

America will eventually pick the winner of American Idol, but - at least for Wednesday night - viewers got the chance to pick the songs. With Jason Mraz mentoring, each Final Five contestant sang two songs chosen by viewers. Alex Preston started the show with "Sweater Weather," which earned nice reviews but requests for more oomph. "You could've made it more exciting to kick off the show," said Jennifer Lopez, although Harry Connick Jr. felt it was a "strong opening." Preston's second choice was "Say Something," a "beautiful performance" Connick called the "performance of the night" and earned a standing ovation from Keith Urban,...

American Idol Wednesday night featured guest mentor Jason Mraz helping the Top 5 singers master songs picked for them by viewers.
American Idol Recap
Alex Preston was first up, singing “Sweater Weather” by The Neighborhood. Preston was strong vocally, hitting all of his notes with a bit more power than usual. The judges weren’t bothered that Preston didn’t change up the song too much. They did, however, encourage him to focus on bringing more energy and range to his performances.
Preston’s second number was A Great Big World’s “Say Something,” which proved to be even more successful than his first number. Preston stripped down the popular song, and delivered an emotionally powerful take on it that rivaled that of The X Factor’s Alex and Sierra. All three judges were wowed by the heartfelt performance.
Idol fans chose Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for Caleb Johnson,...

Several questions before Wednesday (April 30) night's "American Idol": 1) Why is the announced theme "America's Request" and not "America's Choice"? Is America going to make a suggestion followed by, "Pretty please?" and then Caleb Johnson's gonna be all, "Nuh-uh, America"? 2) Fox only said that the singers would be doing *a* song requested by America. What else will fill the time on Wednesday? 3) How excited do you think Alex Preston will be to have Jason Mraz as his mentor this week? On to the full recap, after the break... 8:02 p.m. Zooey Deschanel, Alex Preston's celebrity crush, makes a guest appearance to intro the show, following in Kevin Bacon's show-plugging footsteps. This is quite a week for Alex, eh? 8:04 p.m. Jennifer Lopez is wearing a short silver pillow case, it would appear. 8:05 p.m. Ah. The Finalists will honor two requests apiece this week.

(Make your own predictions by clicking here.) As of the current Top 5 Week, your pick to win the "Idol" crown is Caleb Johnson who has leading odds of 5/4. He has never appeared in America's bottom two or three. Caleb is 22 years old from Asheville,...

American Idol’s current season is now down to it’s top five contestants after Thursday night’s elimination show.
American Idol Results
The results show began with a look at the Idol hopeful’s sitting down to a home-cooked meal by Caleb Johnson’s mom to celebrate the musician's 23rd birthday. The light mood was short-lived in the auditorium, however, as soon it was time to get down to the business of the show – weeding out one more musician on the way to naming the winner of American Idol’s 13th season.
This week, Randy Jackson felt like birthday boy Johnson had nothing to worry about after his back-to-back amazing performances during the country and rock and roll themed night. Jackson also felt that Sam Woolf, who was nearly eliminated from the competition a couple of weeks ago but benefitted from a judges’ save, had shown considerable improvement and...

As we predicted, it was the end of the road for C.J. Harris on "American Idol" Thursday night. But what we didn't see coming was the amount of tears flowing on stage after Ryan Seacrest announced 23-year-old C.J.'s elimination. -Break- Everybody from host Jennifer Lopez, to C.J.'s mom, to the remaining five contestants -- Sam Woolf, Jessica Meuse, Caleb Johnson, Alex Preston, Jena Irene -- were all tearing up over the soul singer's elimination. While emotional, C.J.'s ouster was hardly shocking. 'American Idol' predictions: C.J. Harris or Sam Woolf will be eliminated this week He was previously in America's bottom three during Top 9 Week, Top 8 Week (Part One) and Top 8 Week (Part Two). During his final moments on the show, C.J. admitted to Seacrest that song choice was his biggest downfall. As you can see from the chart on the left,...

It's Judgement Night on "American Idol" and, once again, my feelings are simple: If Jessica, Cj or Sam goes home? Business as usual. If Caleb, Jena or Alex goes home? We burn this thing to the ground. And if Grumpy Cat returns for the second straight show? Well, that's just gravy! 9:00 p.m. Et. I'm watching the tag for the "Parks & Recreation" finale. Priorities, y'all! 9:01 p.m. Grumpy Cat Is Back! 9:01 p.m. Does that me that my prediction was wrong? Will Grumpy Cat be sent home? 9:02 p.m. Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show Time. She's shiny in gold. Very shiny. And, once again, she's incapable of kneeling to greet her supplicants. And Keith is actually wearing a tie tonight. "It's like a dare," he admits. "Someone told me it was the finale. I got confused," he says. 9:04 p.m. Carrie Underwood tweeted kindly about Caleb and Jena.

Just like Donny and Marie, American Idol's Top 6 were a little bit country and little bit rock 'n' roll Wednesday night.
Each contestant performed two songs, and the results were mixed for most, with judges' comments varying as much as the song selection.
Birthday boy Caleb Johnson had the super save and magical moment of the night while rocking "Sting Me" when he lost his mic before catching it without missing a beat.
"Now that was some rock 'n' roll!" said a standing Jennifer Lopez about the performance, which earned roars from the audience. "You created a moment!"
