Music’s biggest night, the 2024 Grammy Awards, is still a few weeks away. But as awards season officially kicks off this Sunday with the 2024 Golden Globes, the best musical works in film and TV will be honored, too. Rounding out the stacked list of presenters for the Jan. 7 ceremony are Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Jared Leto, and Andra Day.
Among the musicians announced as presenters, Lipa is the only artist nominated at this year’s ceremony. The singer’s hedonistic Barbie anthem “Dance the Night” is up for Best Original Song.

Following their win at the Golden Globes, in the category of Best Original Song – Motion Picture, songwriters Diane Warren and Laura Pausini have locked down an Oscar nomination, which recognized “Io Sì,” the original song they wrote for Italian Netflix drama, The Life Ahead.
While this recognition brought Warren to a career total of 12 noms, it happened to mark the first for Pausini, who’s referred to by her collaborator as “the best singer in Italy.”
“For Italy, this is an honor,” Pausini said. “I’m happy to be part of this project because this is a project we made as a family.”
While Warren is no newcomer to the Oscars competition, getting nominated for her songs never gets old. “This is so great, it really is, and so exciting,” she said. “I haven’t won yet, so maybe Laura, you’re my lucky charm here.”

Updated with video: Six-time Golden Globe award nominee and, now, two-time winner Diane Warren was brief in her acceptance speech for Best Original Song – Motion Picture on Sunday, when the habitually soft-spoken composer got to the point for her work on “Io Si (Seen)” from Netflix’s The Life Ahead.
She thanked director Eduardo Ponti, and the film’s star – and Ponti’s famous mother — Sophia Loren. She then said of the film, “It’s such a beautiful story about people who aren’t really seen and they see each other and they see each other through love. And that’s what inspired the song. So thank you again.
Warren shares the award with Niccolò Agliardi and Laura Pausini, the latter of whom also spoke. Pausini thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press, saying, “Grazie Mille,” which translates to “a thousand graces” in Italian.

The list of music winners at the Golden Globes Sunday night bore a strange resemblance to the list of honorees in those two categories 10 years ago. Diane Warren, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross all repeated their wins from one decade ago.
They all had additional help this time, though. Reznor and Ross, who won in 2011 for “The Social Network,” repeated that victory in 2021 with the score for “Soul” — but they shared it with Jon Batiste, who composed the jazz parts of the film. It marked only the second time in the history of the Globes that a trio has triumphed in the category.
Warren won for “Io Sì (Seen)” from Netflix’s “The Life Ahead,” sharing the honor with singer Laura Pausini and Niccolò Agliardi. Warren’s win 10 years ago was for “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from “Burlesque.”
The musical landscape for Pixar’s “Soul” was divided between two worlds.

The smart, adamant and sometimes brutally honest forum posters did not mince words when it came to their reactions to 2021 Golden Globe TV winners on Sunday night. What were the upsets that left them with their jaws on the floor? Which winners were the most deserving? Which losses were posters not able to get over?

The awards season for musical achievement became a little clearer this morning with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe announcements for song and score.
Films about major African-American personalities dominated the song category, with new tunes from “One Night in Miami,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” accounting for three of the five slots. And, intriguingly, four of the five song nominees are from streaming services, not traditional studios.
Also, following Globes tradition, major stars as both performers and writers were named. Odom and Day each managed to score double nominations, as both were also nominated for their acting performances in those films — Odom as crooner Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” Day as blues singer Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

“I got really lucky this year with a couple of these movies. A version of this story about Diane Warren first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Over the last six years, Diane Warren has been nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar five times, the most fruitful stretch in a career that has included 11 nominations dating back to 1988. She has yet to win, but she’s in the race almost every year — and she always eagerly campaigns and isn’t afraid to admit that she really wants an Oscar.
“Of course I want to win,” she said with a laugh. “I hate it when people say, ‘Oh, I don’t really care.’ If I have something I believe in, I love the whole process. It’s fun.”

The best actress race is full of veterans this year, with the likes of Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ellen Burstyn all vying for Oscar attention. Joining the list is Sophia Loren, one of the most prolific actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age, in Edoardo Ponti’s “The Life Ahead.”
The Oscar-winning Italian actor landed her gold statuette for “Two Women” (“La ciociara”) in 1962, which made her the first actor to win an Academy Award for a foreign-language film. She put up one more nomination in 1965 for “Marriage Italian Style” (“Matrimonio all’italiana”) and if she manages a nomination for “The Life Ahead,” a new record could emerge. In 2021, it will mark 56 years since her last nomination, and if nominated, she will break the record currently held by Henry Fonda as the longest gap between acting nominations.
