- Umpired the first game of the 1970 American League Championship Series on 3 October 1970, eight years after he retired following the 1962 World Series. The assigned umpires went on strike to persuade baseball to recognize the newly-formed umpires union, so retired and minor league umpires were brought in to work the game. Berry umpired at third base. This was his final appearance in a major league game.
- During his service as an American League umpire, he also officiated NFL games for several years as a head linesman during baseball's off-season. In 1958 he umpired the World Series, and on 28 December he officiated the NFL championship game between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants. This marked the only time that a person officiated a World Series and an NFL championship game in the same year.
- Berry's father, Charles Joseph "Charlie" Berry (1860-1940) was also a major league baseball player. In 1884, he played for the Altoona Mountain Citys, Kansas City Cowboys, Chicago Browns and Pittsburgh Stogies, all in the short-lived Union Association.
