Sylvia Aderne
- Actress
Ms. Silvia Fontoura Aderne has earned herself household name recognition in the theatre arts circles of Brazil in over 40 years of her tireless and brilliant work. She transitioned to the theatre arts from the public education system with a background as an arts teacher for elementary and middle school age children. When she just began creating theatre plays for her young students nobody suspected that her plays will mark their place in the history of theatre arts of Brazil and that she will rise to the level of an award winning and nationally acclaimed actress.
Ms. Fontoura Aderne began her career as a co-founder and actress of Vernoforte (together with Ilo Krugli), which, with her efforts, developed to become one of the most important theatre companies at the time. Vernoforte toured through almost all of the 23 states in Brazil. They became a force that revolutionized theatre for young artists across the country.
Ms. Fontoura Aderne then co-founded, directed, created and acted in Hombu Theater, an innovative youth theatre arts company that pioneered in the theatre arts in Brazil for the following thirty years - from its inception in 1977 until 2007. Hombu is a word from an ancient Krao language which means "Look for us." Not coincidentally, Hombu indeed became one of the most sought after theatre shows in Brazil. They toured in every corner of the country and beyond: in the United States, France, Portugal, England, Italy, and other nations. The troupe received many awards in Brazil and abroad, including the 1977 Moliere Prize in Sao Paulo for the "The Bird in Cage" play.
The Hombu troupe also won several Mambembe Awards: 1. Best Production in 1977 for the "The Bird in Cage" play; 2. Best Direction in 1979 for the "Speak Clown" play; 3. Best Scenery Award in 1981 for the "This or That" play;
The HOMBU troupe also received a Mambembinho award having been voted as one of the Five Best Touring Young Artist Theatrical Productions of the Year in Brazil: the 1978 for the "The Bird in Cage" play and in 1980 for the "Speak Clown" play.
The National Arts Foundation is also able to confirm that Ms. Fontoura Aderne received the 1979 Mambembe Awards for Best Actress Category for playing Trepa-Trepa in "Speak Clown". She received the same award again in 1995 for playing the peacock in "The Godmother's House".
Cirque du Soleil's selection of Silvia Fontoura Aderne as one of the main characters in the Cirque du Soleil's The Beatles Love show is testament to the fact that her talent and abilities in theater arts are extraordinary indeed.
After 11 years of working with Cirque du Soleil (2005 to 2016), she is pursuing her own path as a theater actress in the United States.
