After the Biden administration issued a final rule last week that would require airlines to automatically issue refunds to passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled, four lawmakers bankrolled by the airline industry introduced must-pass legislation that could undermine the effort.
As The Lever reported, the lawmakers — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) — introduced a new Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization deal that would require passengers to send a “written or electronic request” in order to receive a full...

President Joe Biden hoped to shore up a Democratic “blue wall” as he announced millions of dollars for projects in Milwaukee during his campaign stop in Wisconsin – but his new, tougher rhetoric against his opponent, Donald Trump, got most of the attention.
Biden was beginning a two-day swing through Wisconsin and Michigan in Milwaukee as he attempted to shore up a Democratic “blue wall” and build momentum for his re-election campaign after a fiery State of the Union address in early March.
To show voters that his administration has made their lives better, Biden used this campaign stop to announce $3.3 billion for infrastructure projects in underprivileged communities, including $36 million to reattach parts of Milwaukee’s 6th Street, which was divided due to highway construction in the 60s.
“We’re rebuilding the roads, we’re filling in the cracks in the sidewalk, we’re creating spaces to live and work and play safely,...

Update, 5:53 a.m. Pt, Wednesday: The “uncommitted” vote in Michigan’s Democratic primary garnered about 13.2% of the vote, while President Joe Biden received more than 81%, according to the latest results.
As huge of a victory as that is, the protest campaign to cast ballots for “uncommitted” drew more than 100,000 votes.
While progressives and moderates debate the significance of the protest vote — largely of Biden’s support for Israel in the war in Gaza — overlooked is what happened further down the ballot. Marianne Williamson, the self-help figure who had dropped out of the race, actually got more votes that Rep. Dean Phillips (D-mn), who was still in. She announced that she was “unsuspending” her campaign, even though she and Phillips were in the low single digits — also were beaten by the “uncommitted” vote.
In the GOP primary, Nikki Haley was drawing about 27% to Donald Trump’s 68%. Although Haley’s share...

The foreword of the book The Revivalist Manifesto, written by House Speaker Mike Johnson, has come under scrutiny, along with his subsequent promotion of the book on social media and his podcast.
Authored by local Louisiana political blogger Scott McKay, the book espouses baseless conspiracy theories embraced by the far-right, such as the debunked “Pizzagate” hoax which alleged Democratic officials’ involvement in a trafficking ring.
The book makes unsubstantiated claims, such as the implication that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was blackmailed and connected to disgraced trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Additionally, the book defends podcaster Joe Rogan from racism charges after it was revealed that he used racial slurs. It goes on to disparage poor voters.
Johnson’s 300-word foreword praises McKay’s book as a valuable contribution that resonates with “freedom-loving Americans.”

Hawaii resident Cayla Farris, 49, paid American Airlines almost $40,000 after an incident on a February 13, 2022 flight from Phoenix to Honolulu.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Arizona, Farris engaged in disruptive behavior, utilizing profanity and making threats toward the flight crew and fellow passengers.
The crew could not continue their duties, forcing the captain to return to Phoenix, resulting in several other flights being rerouted to Hawaii.
She pleaded guilty to her disruptive behavior on September 12.
Farris has been sentenced to three months in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation and has to pay $38,952 to the airline. Additionally, Farris is restricted from traveling by commercial aircraft without prior approval during her probationary period.
This is not the first time the Federal Aviation Administration (Faa) has seen disruptive behavior on flights, indicating a pattern in recent years. Some experts have noted that...

The House of Representatives approved a bill that would cut Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s taxpayer-funded salary to just one dollar.
Right-wing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Georgia) measure was passed via voice vote as an amendment to the 2024 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act.
“I’m proud to announce my amendment to Fire Pete Buttigieg just Passed the House,” Greene posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Pothole Pete staged fake bike rides to the White House and used private planes funded by taxpayers to receive awards for the way certain people have sex. American taxpayers should not be on the hook for paying for his lavish trips or his salary.”
“Pete Buttigieg doesn’t do his job,” she continued. “It’s all about fake photo ops and taxpayer-funded private jet trips to accept LGBTQ awards for him. I’m happy my amendment passed, but he doesn’t deserve a single penny.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a veteran of the Afghanistan War, was disgusted Sunday by a September 2019 comment that then-President Donald Trump made about a wounded Army captain, as reported Thursday in The Atlantic.
Trump, in the same vein as his 2015 declaration that Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war John McCain was “not a war hero” because he “likes people who weren’t captured,” apparently groused about the inclusion of Luis Avila at the welcome ceremony for incoming Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley. An Ied...

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Sunday commented on the “strangeness” of a recent ad by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ campaign targeting 2024 rival candidate Donald Trump, claiming the former president “did more than any other Republican to celebrate” pride month.
The ad, which begins by citing Trump’s 2016 Republican National Convention pledge to “protect our LGBTQ citizens” before showing past interview responses from the former president on the subject, abruptly transitions to clips of commentators criticizing DeSantis’ policies for targeting those same citizens. The meme-heavy video depicts in a positive light...

“Oh, it’s wonderful to be here in the town of East Palestine, not a great name,” said the James Austin Johnson-portrayed Donald Trump tonight, kicking off Saturday Night Live. “I’m here and I brought hats, cameras and hats,” he added after taking a swipe at Joe Biden for visiting the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this week and had a visit from his own legal troubles.

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its latest episode by tackling former President Donald Trump’s visit to East Palestine, Ohio, the site of a horrific train derailment. Flanked by supposed East Palestine residents, James Austin Johnson’s Trump carried the cold open with a hilariously meandering address, true to Trump form, during which he said he felt like he could “’Schitt’s Creek’ this place,” referring to the Emmy-winning sitcom about a small town.
“Hello it’s wonderful to be here in the town of East Palestine, not a great name,” he began. “I had to come here and see all these wonderful people who have been abandoned by Biden.”
Johnson’s Trump continued: “Earlier today a farmer came up to me, big fella, and he said, ‘Sir, we have nothing to eat because our dirt is poisoned,’ and I said, ‘What are you doing eating the dirt?’ Don’t eat the dirt folks.

East Palestine, Ohio — Donald Trump traveled to East Palestine, Ohio, on Wednesday to try to make political hay out of the Feb. 3 train derailment that released hazardous toxins into the town on the state’s border with Pennsylvania.
The former president spoke for around 10 minutes to a hand-selected group of Trump-friendly journalists assembled at the town’s fire station. He claimed, as he’s been doing since last week, that he’s responsible for any federal aid on its way to East Palestine, while alleging the Biden administration doesn’t...

When a stream of Democratic candidates trek to Los Angeles this month in likely their final effort to raise money before the midterms, they will be met by Hollywood supporters who are less deflated than they once were about the party’s prospects in November: Call them cautious, if maybe a bit more optimistic.
President Joe Biden’s recent legislative wins, coupled with a renewed focus on the chaos of Donald Trump, has given industry Democrats reason to believe that the party won’t face quite the drubbing that they did in the past. The backlash to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade, fueling a new wave of activism within the industry, has raised hopes that it will translate into improved turnout, and perhaps even match what is expected on the GOP side.

The hosts of “The View” had absolutely no sympathy for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, after he fled abortion rights protesters last week. To them, it was exactly what he deserved.
Kavanaugh was reportedly eating at a Morton’s steakhouse in Washington D.C., when his location was made known to the public. Quickly, protestors gathered outside the restaurant, voicing their upset with Kavanaugh’s vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. In response, Kavanaugh reportedly left the restaurant through the back door.
Following the incident, Chasten Buttigieg — husband to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — poked fun at Kavanaugh’s response, tweeting “Sounds like he just wanted some privacy to make his own dining decisions.” And of course, the women of “The View” took particular delight in the irony Buttigieg laid out.
“You ain’t never seen shade like gay man shade. You know, they’re like on a different level,” Ana Navarro joked.
