YouTube vet, comedian, and author Akilah Hughes has officially joined the Crooked Media family -- a podcast network co-founded by three former Obama staffers: Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor -- that is behind hit shows like Pod Save America, Lovett Or Leave It, and Keep It.
Hughes, who has previously appeared on other Crooked shows, will team up with political journalist Gideon Resnick (formerly of The Daily Beast) to host What A Day -- Crooked’s first-ever daily news podcast that will purportedly contextualize the day’s news in a mere 15 to 20 minutes, and then give listeners actionable insights about what can be done. This includes online resources, petitions, and fundraising opportunities -- and is a key component of Crooked philosophy, which has helped raise millions of dollars to fight gerrymandering, take back the Senate for the Democrats, and support the eventual 2020 Democratic presidential nominee.

Bette Midler has apologized for paraphrasing the title of a 1972 John Lennon-Yoko Ono song — Midler wrote “N-word,” John & Yoko spelled it out — in an angry tweet Thursay about the “too brief investigation” into Brett Kavanaugh.
Midler’s apology reads: “The too brief investigation of allegations against Kavanaugh infuriated me. Angrily I tweeted w/o thinking my choice of words would be enraging to black women who doubly suffer, both by being women and by being black. I am an ally and stand with you; always have. The original post read “Women are the n-word of the world, raped, beaten, enslaved married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring the pain and danger of childbirth and life In Silence for Thousands of years They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.”

On March 1, two friends attempted to set a world record for the largest bone marrow drive in history, and they got some help from the online video community along the way. YouTube stars like Casey Neistat, Shaun "Shonduras" McBride Peter McKinnon, and Akilah Hughes have posted videos of the #LemonsForLeukemia challenge, which asks participants to bite into acidic fruit in order to galvanize bone marrow donations.
#LemonsForLeukemia can be traced by to One List One Life, an initiative launched by two friends, one of whom has been diagnosed with leukemia. As part of a bucket list, the friends looked to set a record by engineering a coordinated, worldwide bone marrow drive. In the model of the ice bucket challenge, they came up with an enticing dare -- bite into a lemon and record your reaction to the sour taste -- and asked participants to challenge their friends upon completing the task themselves.

On Wednesday, Twitter was overrun with queries on the status of Robert Mueller‘s special investigation into ties between Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia following the president’s controversial Tuesday press conference in which he said “both sides” were to blame for the violence at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville over the weekend.
Wrote CNN commentator Ana Navarro, “Dear Robert Mueller, Sir, please hurry the hell up! Signed, An American – Ana Navarro.”
Former FBI director Mueller is the Justice Department’s special counsel overseeing the investigation into the Trump campaign.

Adjusting to life as a full-time content creator can be difficult, and YouTube wants to ease that transition for some of its creators. As painful as it is to watch Mariah Carey try to play off what is being called her “epic lip sync fail” from ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest,” laughing at celebrity snafus is a time-honored internet tradition as old as schadenfreude itself.
In one clip, Carey traverses the stage aimlessly, sending misfired jokes about her song’s chart-topping status. Pointing the microphone to the blissfully ignorant crowd, Carey announces something no diva ever dreams of saying: “Let the audience sing, okay?”
And sing they did. The internet’s appetite for “failure porn” is as voracious as ever. Twitter’s punishment was swift and severe. One user even took the opportunity to make a Helen Keller joke. Jimmy Kimmel roasted the singer on his show Monday night, quipping: “She lipped, she just forgot to sync.”
In the aftermath, Carey accused Dick Clark Productions...

BuzzFeed’s co-founder and CEO, Jonah Peretti, penned an open letter to Akilah Hughes in which he denied that his company stole content from online creators. Hughes, a YouTube personality and content creator, stirred up a storm when she went after BuzzFeed right where it would hurt them most — their sponsors. After claiming that BuzzFeed plagiarized one of her videos and had done the same with other creators, she launched a campaign against the media outlet calling for advertisers to pull out. Peretti took personal offense to her campaign, saying he felt that Hughes was not only attacking the company,...

A YouTube star is calling on advertisers to stop supporting BuzzFeed Video, saying the company has repeatedly ripped off ideas from creators like herself. But a BuzzFeed producer says online videos are a little like old jokes — it’s impossible to say who thought of a concept first, and sometimes people just have the same ideas. Akilah Hughes, who has earned nearly 120,000 subscriber in the last three years by posting comedic YouTube videos on subjects ranging from food to books to race to Lyme disease, wrote a post for Medium that accuses BuzzFeed Video of “repeatedly stealing ideas, jokes, bits,...
