So far I’ve found Heroes: Vengeance to be decent, without really stretching itself in any way to make it more of an essential read. The idea of the Heroes Reborn minis is a good one, giving characters from the TV show more of a voice, letting them breathe a bit more than in the constraints of a 42 minute episode that juggles lots of characters and plotlines. The down side of that is sometimes characters should not be fleshed out further, as they were created as a function of plot with a deliberately limited lifespan, and attempts to make more of them just do not work. Unfortunately, so far, El Vengador seems to be drifting that way.

Issue 1 of this 5 issue limited series was a bit of a disappointment to me, it must be said. The idea is sound; take characters from the Heroes Reborn TV show, and give them an individual spotlight, add more depth and interest to them and their world. Have it co-written by the show’s producer too, to keep consistency and authenticity. Sounds great, but as the first issue showed individual pieces do not a satisfying end product make. I had my fingers crossed for issue two.
Issue 1 gave us the set-up, Oscar Gutierrez is a mechanic by day, costumed vigilante at night, dedicated in both guises to keeping his community (and family) safe. We still jump between the past and present, and a few more hints are revealed to the reader. Carlos was absent from...

For a brief time the television series Heroes was a cultural phenomenon, running from 2006-2010, though by its end it had badly run out of steam. That first season though stands up as good as any you will see. As a show that took its ideas and format from comic books, it has strangely not done very well in translating the Heroes world and characters to the comic book format in the past. Titan Comics are giving it another bash, and doing it the right way by getting the show’s producer, Seamus Kevin Fahey, to co-write.
The central idea is to produce a series of mini-series that will flesh out the background and motivations of the different characters that will be spotlighted in the Heroes Reborn TV show, (currently showing in the Us,...
