Perfectly cast as the most overbearingly demanding Texas high school football coach to appear on screen since Jon Voight made life miserable for James Van Der Beek in “Varsity Blues,” Brad Leland is the most valuable player in “The Last Whistle,” a modestly engaging indie drama that attempts, with mixed results, to traverse the middle ground between blunt-force criticism of win-at-all-costs philosophy and sentimental celebration of influential father figures.
Leland, arguably best known for his role as a small-town football booster in the TV series “Friday Night Lights,” is fearlessly, even aggressively unsympathetic during much of his screen time here as Victor Trenton, a Fort Worth area high school football coach who’s introduced as a skilled tactician whose winning ways may lead to his being hired by a prestigious university — but only if his team continues to, well, win.
Partly because he’s eager to impress his potential employer,...

Things might be getting a little meta this season.
One of the new residents introduced on Code Black Season 3 Episode 1 is filming a documentary ... something along the lines of what Ryan McGarry made about the Los Angeles County Hospital ER.
But he's not the only newbie, and boy did they have a hell of a first day.
Pepper definitely had it the worst. Who gets accidentally dosed with fentanyl on their first day?! I hope her insurance and sick time kicks in right away.
Despite her being, well, unconscious for most of the hour, we learned a surprising amount about the new female resident. In addition to being a little meek and self-doubting, her real name is Andrea and she had throat cancer as a kid.

Wednesday’s Code Black premiere brought about more changes in the hospital ranks, including two new residents and one significant absence.
Season 3 opens with “Mama” introducing himself to the first-year residents, per tradition. They include Diego Avila (Scream‘s Tyler Perez), whose wealthy father pulled strings to get him the position, and Pepper Russo (Nashville‘s Chaley Rose), who has the worst first day ever. While Diego is busy filming everything for his documentary about Angels Memorial, Pepper — who puked during an earlier trauma — accidentally inhales fentanyl and passes out. As Leanne and the other doctors work to save her life,...

Premiere dates for two of the most popular dramas on CBS have finally been announced.
Yes, we're talking about Elementary and Code Black here.
Thankfully, Elementary has dodged the dreaded Sunday night timeslot this time around and will instead unspool its sixth season on Monday nights at 10/9c starting April 30.
The show will take over from Scorpion which wraps its season on April 23. Elementary was given a surprise renewal last year from CBS after continued erosion in the ratings.
The move was said to be down to the money the series brings with various syndication deals. In short, the show is said to turn in a big profit for CBS.
A vote of confidence from CBS came in November when the network increased the show's order from 13 episodes to 21 for Season 6.
Elementary Season 5 concluded with Sherlock hallucinating conversations with his deceased mother, while Joan discovered the severity of her partner's condition.

ETonline is going behind the scenes of Code Black on an all-new episode of our original Facebook Watch series, Let's Get Crafty.
Et's Leanne Aquilera recently caught up with a few of the show's stars around the set's craft services table, who dished on how they stay so fit around so much delicious junk food.
"When I was on TheWest Wing, I did four years and never even knew where the craft services table was," Rob Lowe explained. "Because, I have a theory: On TV, you're either getting bigger, or you're getting fitter, but there's no [in between]. Watch your favorite shows, you'll know what I'm saying."
However, if he could eat anything he wanted from crafty without consequence, it would be pre-packaged cookies and cream cheese danishes. Unfortunately for Lowe, he's stuck eating fresh fruit.
