The live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is finally going to see the light of day after being in and out of development for many years.
After numerous false starts, Netflix was all set to develop a feature take on the beloved animated series back in 2022, but we recently got word that the latest attempt to get the project off the ground had also fallen by the wayside.
However, we'd later learn that Amazon/MGM Studios had acquired the movie, with Bumblebee director Travis Knight in talks to helm. Now, multiple trades are reporting that Knight has officially signed on, and the movie is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.
Chris Butler rewrote the script from an initial draft by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Previously, the Nee Brothers (The Lost City) were attached to direct.

Now that Barbie has busted open the box office and set records of all kinds, Awfully Good Movies presents another Mattel toy line that had far less luck on the big screen back in 1987: Dolph Lundgren as He-Man in Masters of the Universe!
Yes, from Cannon Films, the proudly cheap studio that filled up many theaters with glorified skin flicks and Chuck Norris ass-kickers in the 80s, comes the cinematic adaptation of the powerful plastic figures that became a hit animated TV series, with Ivan Drago stepping out of the ring to play the most powerful man in the universe who saves the day in the land of Eternia. However, any significant resemblance to the iconic Filmation show will stop and start at the characters, as a battle with Skeletor (Frank Langella) sends He-Man, Man-at-Arms and Teela (Orko or Prince Adam playsets not included) off to present day California,...

Kevin Smith is sticking to DC…maybe.
The “Clerks” director, who famously was offered to head up Warner Bros’ DC department in 1996, revealed that he will never work for Marvel or the “Star Wars” franchise due to the “rabid” fans of both IPs.
“It’s a fool’s errand — you’re going to piss somebody off,” Smith told The Guardian. “Fandom is rabid and tribal. When I worked on ‘Masters of the Universe,’ I took a lot of heat from people who felt like I had ruined their childhood. Going near a Marvel or a Star Wars would make me insanely reticent.”
Smith continued, “They’ve got a billion people to make those movies, but nobody’s making Kevin Smith movies, so I might as well make them.”
The “Chasing Amy” helmer led the 2021 Netflix animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” which fans found to be too “woke,” according to Smith.

Kevin Smith is a diehard Marvel movie and Star Wars fan, but that doesn’t mean he’d ever want to be behind the camera to direct an installment in one of these franchises. Smith, who once had to publicly battle toxic fans who hated his Netflix animated series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” recently told The Guardian that fandom is too “rabid” for him to direct a Marvel or Star Wars movie.
“No. It’s a fool’s errand – you’re going to piss somebody off,” Smith said when asked if he’d direct Marvel or “Star Wars” movies in the future. “Fandom is rabid and tribal. Set in a beautiful bird-chirping residential neighborhood in Southern California, a band is born. Made up entirely of pretty private school girls. All the elements are in place and the racquet ball of cinematic sensationalism has been rickashayed into a landfill of soon to-be benevolent screens across the globe.
Pop princess D'Lannie Brown is the answer. A heroine, the jovial decent into clarity; a rich thespian case study. She plays Aspen, the lead singer, and bassist of a new hot act that could not go on without her. Holding it down on drums, is zesty Zeb, played by the delightful and all-natural-Natural Danielle Stavin, in a her film debut. On keyboard is the marvelous Skylar Ripp, as rambunctious Rainy, an interestingly lovely and potent counterpart. Is she a damsel in distress or an instrument of evil? On electric guitar is the ever-so-enlightened Lauren Taler as Carby Kelp,...

Somehow, someway, the award winning bowlegged poet-turned-filmmaker from Midlothian, Virginia, is now getting his 7th feature film produced, Deadly Punkettes. The film will depict the gritty Neapolitan rise and fall of 4 prissy teenage punk-rock princesses, who’ll have to maintain well-rounded riots even after a founding member mysteriously dies, and haunts their act!
The picture might just be the first of its kind, melding an all-girl group novelty with paranormal terror. The plot twists hardly promise to be tame, and the predictability of this particular writer’s track record could convince us the story will be chock full of sassy, silly, and seductive female characters.
Meet the band… On bass guitar and vocals … the daring and diverse D’Lannie Brown, as Aspen, a simple girl who’s about to become enchanted by a new set of illusions in her life … and death. On guitar … the delicate and dear … Claire Gordon-Harper,...
