Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tarot.
Tarot is one of the oldest and most popular methods of divination. A form of cartomancy, it’s the practice of connecting with ancestors, spirit guides, or hidden aspects of the self by drawing cards and interpreting their hidden meanings. British occultist Pamela Colman Smith illustrated the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith deck which remains the standard representation of each card and forms the basis of most tarot analysis today. But there are endless interpretations of the 78-card structure. Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s Tarot imagines a similar deck with the power to bring a reading’s final outcome to bloody life. Designed by a witch who infused the deck with her dying blood, this grisly stack contains malevolent variations of tarot’s most frightening faces.

Adapted from Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel, the much better titled Horrorscope, Tarot is the feature directorial debut from writers/directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. The story opens at a rented mansion inhabited by a group of college students celebrating a birthday, although tensions are high due to a recent break-up within the group. When they run out of beer, the group search the mansion for hidden alcohol only to discover strange tarot cards within the basement.
Despite saying that it is a sacred rule of Tarot to not use someone else’s deck, Hayley (Harriet Slater) agrees to use the strange deck to read everyone else’s horoscopes. One by one, their horoscopes come true as they meet their ends, with it becoming clear that the group are...

Henderson recently explained to Bloody Disgusting, “I couched it as doing a fun slumber party horror movie, like a Thirteen Ghosts kind of thing, and having the chance to do a whole bevy of different monsters in one film really excited me a lot.”

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Sony’s Screen Gems brought horror back to the box office with the Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) over the weekend. The film debuted in theaters nationwide on Thursday, May 2, but how did it stack up against other new releases for the genre this year?
Directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg, Tarot debuted in the #4 spot on the domestic box office charts, scaring up $6.5 million and giving it the third lowest opening for a wide release horror movie at the box office here in 2024 so far. For the sake of comparison, here are the domestic opening weekend numbers for this year’s big screen horror offerings…
Night Swim – $11.7 million Abigail – $10.2 million Imaginary – $9.9 million The First Omen – $8.3 million Tarot – $6.5 million Immaculate – $5.3 million Lisa Frankenstein – $3.6 million
Worldwide, Tarot‘s box office total sits at $10.2 million. The good news for Screen Gems is that the horror movie’s reported production budget was just $8 million,...

A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.
Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. If open-minded audiences buy into this transparently trendy gimmick and its melodramatic narrative execution, what feels like a spiritual “Final Destination” spinoff — told by way of an Urban Outfitters’ small gifts display — could very well...

Horror movies can grow from any place. That’s one of the most exciting aspects of the genre – any idea can become scary as hell in the right hands. With flicks like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation surprising audiences, it’s not unreasonable to find great hits from even thin concepts. Tarot, the latest Sony and Screen Gems horror film, seeks to replicate this success. Unfortunately, despite great creature designs, Tarot stumbles over its own feet at every opportunity. The result is not only frustrating but an absolute slog.
Tarot Plot
During a weekend in the Catskills, a group of young college students celebrate Elsie’s (Larsen Thompson) birthday. After the group runs out of alcohol, they stumble upon a deck of tarot cards. Haley (Harriet Slater) uses a combination of horoscopes and Tarot to read their futures. Paxton (Jacob Batalon), Paige (Avantika), Grant (Adain Bradley), Madelyn (Humberly González...

“Tarot” has the makings of a classic sleepover horror movie, fine-tuned for an astrology-obsessed Gen Z. When a group of friends accidentally read their horoscopes with the help of a cursed set of Tarot cards, scary symbols like “The Magician” and “The High Priestess” come to life and start haunting the group. Blending elements of classic supernatural slashers and the “Final Destination” movies, the film stars a game group of twentysomethings, including Harriet Slater, Jacob Batalon and Larsen Thompson.
Here, Thompson, who has also appeared in spooky projects such as the 2018 film “Bloodline” and the 2022 series “The Midnight Club,” reveals the tricks of the trade for surviving as an actor on the set of a horror film.
1) How to play dead
A lot of that, of course, is holding your breath. For me, the trick has always been “belly breathing.” Most of my work is leading up to when I need to hold my breath,...

Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.
Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.
Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

An evil curse gets awakened in Screen Gems horror movie Tarot when a group of friends recklessly ignore a sacred rule: never use someone else’s deck. Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg unleash a variety of Tarot card-inspired entities on the group through practical effects, and create an unexpected connection to Insidious along the way.
The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cohen and Halberg ahead of Tarot‘s release, where the pair shared more about the film’s practical effects-driven horrors and revealed how Tarot drew from Insidious in a specific way.

Originally titled Horrorscope, Screen Gems is getting set to unleash Tarot in theaters this coming May, and the film has just received its official rating from the MPA this morning.
Tarot has been rated “PG-13” for “Horror violence, terror, bloody images, some strong language and drug content.” You can watch the previously released trailer down below.
The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.
When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards in the upcoming Screen Gems horror movie Tarot. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.

Sony Pictures has released a brand new trailer for an upcoming horror flick titled "Tarot." This one was originally going under the title "Horrorscope," but the powers that be decided to be a little more straightforward about what's happening here. Yes, it's about deadly tarot cards and, based on the trailer, it looks very much like what one might expect from a horror movie about deadly tarot cards. Check it out for yourself above.
The footage doesn't give away too much by way of story specifics. It focuses more on the gimmick, which is that this possessed tarot card deck unleashes various deadly beings on its unsuspecting victims. It is also pretty heavy on the jump scares for those who are into that sort of thing. It appears to be cut from the same cloth as 2014's "Ouija." Whether or not that's a good or a bad thing is up...

"Who's next?" Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a horror movie arriving this summer titled Tarot, about tarot cards, obviously. After those Ouija board movies, it was inevitable that one day someone would make a Tarot horror and here we are. This project was also titled Horrorscope since it's adapted from a book called "Horrorscope", but it has been switched back to just Tarot for the release in May. The plot centers on a group of college friends who start dying in ways that are connected to their fortunes after having their horoscopes read. Before their time runs out, they have to work together to uncover the mystery. "Your fate is in the cards" - of course. Tarot stars Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika, and Jacob Batalon, along with Humberly González, Alana Boden, Larsen Thompson. Well unfortunately looks as cheesy as could be, with plenty of obvious horrific moments and jump scares.

This one looks like a fairly generic teen horror movie, but the concept could at least allow for a fun array of supernatural entities – several of which are glimpsed in this first trailer.
Update: Artist Trevor Henderson has revealed that he designed the monsters for this movie! Henderson tweets, “I was asked to be the sole designer of the eight different monsters in this movie!!” He also notes, “All of my favourites of the designs are only hinted at.”

Earlier this year, Sony / Screen Gems announced that they would be giving the horror film Horrorscope a theatrical release on June 28, 2024. But in late October, Paramount announced that they were moving A Quiet Place: Day One from its previously announced March 8, 2024 release date to June 28. So it’s no surprise to hear (via Borys Kit) that Screen Gems has decided to shift Horrorscope forward to May 10th. Thanks to A Quiet Place: Day One, we’re going to see Horrorscope a month earlier.

Screen Gems horror movie Horrorscope had been set for theatrical release on June 28, 2024, a prime summer slot, but we’ve learned this week that Sony has re-dated the movie.
Horrorscope will now release in theaters on May 10, 2024.
Why the move? It may have something to do with the fact that A Quiet Place: Day One is currently dated for theatrical release on June 28, moving into that new date just last month.
Jacob Batalon (“Reginald the Vampire”), Alana Boden (The Invitation), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn: The Foundation) and Avantika (Senior Year) will star alongside Humberly González (Nobody), Wolfgang Novogratz (Assassination Nation), Larsen Thompson (“The Midnight Club”), Harriet Slater (“Pennyworth”) and Olwen Fouéré (Mandy).
Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen (Moonfall) wrote the script and will direct the movie.

Antonio Marras’ catwalk transformed into a set where he shot a remake of a 1968 Hollywood movie. During Milan Fashion Week on Sept. 20, the Sardinian fashion designer set up an onstage film studio, with various rooms in which actors, actresses, workers, divas, a production secretary, costume designer, editing secretary, personal assistant, seamstress, director, producer, set coordinator, clapboard operator, sound engineer, extras, models and aspiring actresses took turns in the spotlight. In a flash, the audience found itself catapulted to the end of the golden years of cinema, amid fleeting and rambling kaftans, couture gowns, robes, tailored suits cinched at the waist with masculine styles, duster coats, sheath dresses, and dramatic and divine evening gowns.

This article contains spoilers for The Midnight Club.
With the cancellation of The Midnight Club after its first season, it seems as though Mike Flanagan’s Netflix era may be coming to a close. The upcoming limited series The Fall of the House of Usher appears to be Flanagan’s last TV project under his pact with Netflix, and he and his Intrepid Pictures Partner Trevor Macy just signed an overall TV deal with Amazon.
While most of Flanagan’s Netflix projects were designed to be one season miniseries, he had at least one more season in mind to tell The Midnight Club’s story and left some things unanswered on purpose. Even though we won’t get to see the story of Brightcliffe continue onscreen, Flanagan was kind enough to share answers to questions left by season 1 as well as how he and Leah Fong hoped to end the second season on tumblr.

Mike Flanagan’s long-awaited adaptation of The Midnight Club has finally made its way to Netflix. Geared at a slightly younger audience, the series is an adaptation of Christopher Pike‘s novel about five teenagers living out their final days at Brightcliffe Manor, a hospice for terminal youth. Each night they gather in the ornate library to tell scary stories, creating ghosts as they wait to become them. At just over 200 pages, the slim novel is a moving story of love, friendship, and death; perfect for Flanagan’s patented blend of sentimental horror.
True to form, the writer and director, along with co-creator Leah Fong, injected the original story with new characters, amplified plotlines, and extra moments of terror, expanding the narrative to deepen Pike’s original themes.

But somehow...
