Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will return to host the 77th Annual Tony Awards, marking her third consecutive year as host. Last year’s Tonys took place during the WGA strike and were carried out without a script. DeBose was more than up to that challenge, so handling the 2024 show should be much less stressful.
In addition to hosting, DeBose will choreograph the awards show’s opening number and serve as producer.
“I couldn’t pass up the chance to host the Tonys one more time at Lincoln Center. I’m excited to collaborate with the team to create an incredible celebration of this season’s achievements on Broadway for our community and for everyone at home,” said DeBose.

In a rare joint appearance, the heads of the organizations behind the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and Grammys expressed optimism about strike talk progress and also tackled the task of producing live events.
“The planning continues,” Bill Kramer, CEO of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said when asked about the upcoming Oscars. “We don’t stop planning. We’ve all had to deal with years of pivoting. This is just the latest pivot moment. We’re supportive. We see all sides of this. We want a solution. … There’s just a lot of planning and pivoting right now.”
After a breakthrough Wednesday, WGA negotiators are meeting again with the AMPTP today, and optimism is growing about a potential settlement to the nearly 5-month-long impasse. Award shows have been particularly hard-hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with the Emmys pushed back to January, putting them in the first-quarter corridor with the Grammys and Oscars.

The striking Writers Guild of America denied a request for a waiver to allow for the Tony Awards to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on June 11, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The 76th Tony Awards are scheduled to celebrate the best work of the 2022-23 Broadway season on June 11 — but, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, a number of decisions over the next few days will determine if the ongoing writers strike will force the ceremony, which is supposed to air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, to move forward in a non-televised format or to be postponed.
According to multiple high-level sources, a script for the Tony Awards was completed before the Writers Guild of America declared a strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, of which CBS and Paramount+ are member companies, on May 2. (The Tony nominations were announced just hours later.) But without a waiver from the Writers Guild granting special dispensation for the show, guild members would almost certainly show up to picket outside the venue: New York’s United Palace theater in Washington Heights.

Broadway’s oft-stated efforts to reach beyond traditional audiences and its own mid-town environs seems evident in the choice of location for the 2023 Tony Awards: Rather than the usual theater-district and Times Square haunts like Radio City Music Hall or one of the major Broadway venues, the Tonys will be broadcast live on CBS from the United Palace in upper Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
The 76th Annual Tony Awards will take place on Sunday, June 11, 2023, on CBS, and will stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

The 76th annual Tony Awards will take place on June 11, 2023 and for the first time, will be presented at the United Palace in Washington Heights.
The Tony Awards have traditionally been held at Radio City Music Hall, but moved to the Beacon Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in 2011 and 2012. The 2019-2020 Tony Awards, which were delayed until September 2021, were held at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre.
The Tony Awards did not give a reason for the move, but it brings the awards show to a smaller venue. The United Palace, which hosts concerts, movie premieres and film shoots, has close to 3,400 seats to Radio City Music Hall’s more than 6,000. The theater opened in 1930 as one of Loew’s Wonder Theatres, showing movies and vaudeville performances.
