“I was definitely really excited to tackle the union stuff,” says Morgan Spector of what storyline from the second season of “The Gilded Age” he was most excited to sink his teeth into. In the latest episodes of the HBO drama series, his industrialist character George Russell must confront rising unrest amongst his factory workers in Pittsburgh. The actor relished this arc because the series was able to depict a period of American history that was “so dramatic” and “incredibly violent,” one that is “under-known and under-discussed” in United States’ history. Watch our exclusive video interview.
The conflict between George and his workers speaks to the “delicate balancing act” Spector has to perform in the role because the audience loves George and yet he must do some occasionally ruthless things. The actor thinks viewers are endeared to his billionaire figure because “we have access to George… to his intimate life,...

Before Morgan Spector ever put on the three-piece suit of railroad baron George Russell, he was concerned audiences might feel alienated by the opulence of HBO’s “The Gilded Age.”
“The vast majority of people just don’t have anything in common with someone like George Russell,” he says. “When I first read these scripts, it was in 2020. Bernie Sanders was still a frontrunner in the presidential campaign, and class politics were in the news. There was a sense that maybe we are tired of billionaires and their power.”
He’s not wrong for wondering just how elastic viewer tolerance would be for 19th century cultural warfare between old and new money. But Spector credits creator Julian Fellowes with recognizing the timeless appetite for sudsy yet sharp historical fiction that places privileged characters and their often-trivial problems in the context of a transformational moment in history. During the show’s second season,...

The cast of Modern Family reunited at the SAG Awards on Saturday to present the Ensemble in a Comedy Series category won by The Bear.
Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson took the stage and talked about what they have been up to following the end of their comedy series.
Burrell opened up the floor, asking the cast if they missed being together with Bowen, noting that being on a show for 11 seasons “never happens.” O’Neill chimed in, saying, “It’s happened twice to me,” alluding to the 11-season run of Married with Children.
“Yeah, my new show Griselda is also, for a month already, No. 1 in 90 countries,” Vergara said.

“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Gilded Age.]
In HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age, the character of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) offers a solitary glimpse into the life of the Black upper class in New York City in the 1880s. Yet in season two, that contextual lens is expanded when the secretary and aspiring journalist, just one generation removed from slavery, ventures to the South and witnesses both the progressive educational strides made by and for African Americans at the dawn of the establishment of historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the social prejudices that threaten their existence.
“Peggy gets to explore so many different textures of the Black world this season, from going to Tuskegee, to meeting Sarah Garnet and seeing the community organizing that was happening during that time, and getting to see a Black social gathering for the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was one of the first in the series,...

Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.
The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.
The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).
Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 5, “Close Enough to Touch.”] Denée Benton‘s Peggy Scott experienced a life-threatening moment in The Gilded Age Season 2’s fifth episode. A run-in with aggressive, drunk white men in a Tuskegee restaurant forced Peggy and T. Thomas Fortune (Sullivan Jones) to flee the Alabama town. Booker T. Washington (Michael Braugher) and his wife, Fannie Washington (Brittany Bradford), helped them sneak out of the town in a wagon and hid them in a barn. As they waited in fear, an angry mob of white men with torches hunted them down, and their intentions were lethal. Thankfully, Peggy and Thomas’ whereabouts remained hidden, and the danger passed. This article contains spoilers for The Gilded Age season 2 episode 5.
The Gilded Age has woven the story of Black New Yorkers into the larger fabric of its depiction of 1880’s society. Season 2 expands on this foundation by also showing a slice of what life was like in the South during the same period.
Peggy (Denée Benton) is very eager to cover the most important stories of the day for T. Thomas Fortune’s (Sullivan Jones) newspaper. Covering the Red Cross’s relief work last season has also whet her appetite for traveling beyond the city. During season 2 the opportunity to cover a big and meaningful story presents itself when Booker T. Washington offers Peggy and Fortune the opportunity to cover the opening of a new dormitory at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
The Tuskegee Institute, now called Tuskegee University, was founded in 1881 just two years before the main plot of the series begins.

Genies, at least in pop culture, have long been comic foils. Way back in 1940, in “The Thief of Bagdad,” Rex Ingram played Djinn, the movie’s larger-than-life genie — 100 feet tall in his ponytail and red diaper — as a sly, laughing soul man of lighthearted effrontery. The surrealist ’60s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” featured Barbara Eden, in diaphanous harem silks, as a magical servant/housewife, blinking her eyes to teleport her clueless “master” out of trouble. And Robin Williams’ vocal performance as the Genie in “Aladdin” may have come closer than any of his other film performances to channeling Williams the free-associational joke geyser.
So in “Genie,” when Melissa McCarthy pops out of a jewel box and reveals herself to be an ancient granter of wishes named Flora, it’s hardly a surprise that 1) the character is a complete lark, and 2) the whole joke is that Flora, though she hasn...

You have to really watch your language when hanging out with a genie. Especially a genie who can grant unlimited wishes. After all, it’s too easy to utter the words “I wish” when you don’t really mean them, and the result could be that you accidentally send someone directly to Hell. So please, please, be careful what you say.
If that warning seems a bit fanciful, then you haven’t seen the new holiday-themed Christmas movie premiering on Peacock. Genie features so many jokes revolving around characters carelessly uttering “I wish” only to have to quickly reverse themselves that the film seems more like a public service announcement than a would-be holiday classic.
Written by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill), the streaming film is a loose remake of Bernard and the Genie, a 1991 BBC television movie that he also scripted. You can’t blame...

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.
“American Horror Story’s” Taissa Farmiga plays a supporting role with room for growth: Gladys Russell,...

A gasp went around the world when viewers learned that Marian (Louisa Jacobsen) has been teaching children watercolors in “The Gilded Age” Season 2, Episode 1.
Less of a gasp and more of a chuckle, really, as “The Gilded Age” did what it arguably does best, delivering an extremely minor narrative development with the intensity of something much more significant. The show is filled with such petty inconveniences, as well as actual serious developments, all of it sold to full effect by the cast and setting. Teaching watercolor probably was a big deal for a high-society unmarried woman in the 19th-century, but it’s exacerbated on “The Gilded Age” by Aunt Agnes’ (Christine Baranski) reaction. Truly, watching characters on the show react to everything from the wrong napkin to a secret child is one of the joys of watching this series.

It has been a long 19 months since we’ve been able to luxuriate in a withering line from Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn, but fans of “The Gilded Age” may now celebrate as the HBO drama has returned with its second season. After the first batch of episodes ended with Carrie Coon’s social climber Bertha Russell making significant inroads with “old money” New York, these new episodes will find her at odds with the old guard once again as they go head-to-head with rivaling opera houses. The season premiere aired on Oct. 29 on HBO and streamed on Max.
With such an operatic season arc and its many other subplots, “The Gilded Age” has avoided a sophomore slump. As of this writing, the show has a 74 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. “The Gilded Age” Season 2 may begin with embroidered hats and Easter festivities, but co-showrunner Sonja Warfield gave the warning for viewers — new and old — to hold onto those hats as the season progresses.
Created by Julian Fellowes, who has experience with period drama from his work on the sprawling “Downton Abbey” series, took his detailed storytelling from Britain to America to weave a complex tapestry of storylines set around the late 1800s. Last season introduced young heroines Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton), who become fast friends as they both moved to New York to take their changes in the city’s social scene. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 1.] One of the biggest questions from The Gilded Age Season 1 finale was answered in The Gilded Age Season 2 premiere, which aired on Sunday, October 29 on HBO after a year-and-a-half hiatus. Last year’s finale revealed that Peggy Scott’s (Denée Benton) son was not stillborn like her father, Arthur (John Douglas Thompson), had made her believe. Rather, he had been living in Philadelphia with his adoptive family all this time. The baby’s father was a stockboy at Arthur’s pharmacy that Peggy had fallen in love with. The baby was born after their elopement, but Arthur convinced her he was stillborn. Peggy was forced to annul her marriage, leading to her moving to Pennsylvania to attend the Philadelphia Institute for Colored Youth, meanwhile Arthur secretly had the baby adopted by a Black family in Philadelphia. She began working for Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski...

The Gilded Age Season Two begins with hats. Lots and lots and lots of hats. It is Easter Sunday, and all the women of 1880s New York society are putting on their fanciest headgear before heading to church. And by far the most fabulous hat of all is the one you can see in the picture at the top of this review, a towering concoction of feathers and flowers, placed atop the head of the show’s richest woman, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon).

“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.
Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Fellowes also injected servant-class stories into the ensemble cast,...

Bertha Russell is staring out the window at the falling rain. Perched a few feet away, anxiously waiting, is her guest, but Mrs. Russell (played by Carrie Coon) pays her little mind. One gets the sense she could’ve stood there peacefully for 10 minutes, maybe 20, without eliciting any questions from the invited woman (a character best left unnamed), but a TV show can rarely ask its audience to sit in silence for that long, so Bertha pivots to her prey and dispatches with her quickly. “Some gossip has reached me that I confess I find disquieting,” she says, swatting away a follow-up query meant to steer focus to a separate topic. Instead, Bertha continues apace, proceeding to annihilate her visitor, bluntly laying out her failings before making clear she has no room for recourse. She will do what Bertha demands, or she will be further embarrassed — perhaps in public, rather...
