Back in March of 2023, we reported on the death of the greatest boutique pop culture poster company, Mondo. Granted, the company still exists in name only underneath the Funko brand, but Mondo as we once knew it (including a majority of the founders and core staff that made the company possible) is over. Fortunately, a savior appeared in the form of ... the team that gave us Mondo in the first place and the wonderful weirdos (Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah) over at SpectreVision. Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek joined CEO Jenny Jacobi to form the new company, Mutant, which will produce limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.
One of Mutant's first releases is the original motion picture soundtrack for "Lisa Frankenstein," so you can relive all the glorious, creepy '80s goodness whenever the urge to build your own undead boyfriend beckons.

Established in 2004, Mondo forever changed the landscape of pop culture collectibles — from t-shirts to screen printed movie posters, vinyl soundtracks, toys, board games and even home goods, the company elevated fandom from a hobby to a lifestyle. It has not only inspired dozens of similar businesses worldwide and propelled the consumption of physical media, but minted a team that quickly and widely became known for its passion, creativity and shrewd decisionmaking. On Monday, four of their former leaders — led by Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, Spencer Hickman and Mo Shafeek — debuted a new endeavor leveraging their experience, relationships and reputation: Mutant.
Led by CEO Jenny Jacobi, a Vidiots Foundation advisory board member and seven-year Alamo Drafthouse veteran, the quartet will produce posters, music, apparel and more. The announcement them a chance to start fresh after exiting Mondo, now under the ownership of vinyl figurine company Funko Inc.

Back in March 2023, the Austin-based collectibles and poster company Mondo was hit with a wave of layoffs from parent company Funko, including the company’s former co-founders and creative directors. Today, those leaders have announced their comeback.
Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek have teamed up with CEO Jenny Jacobi to form a new company called Mutant, which will release limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.
The company is being formed underneath SpectreVision, Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s genre-bending production company. The company is kicking off its launch with a vinyl soundtrack for Netflix’s “Society of the Snow.” The LP features artwork from Mo Shafeek adorning the score from composer Michael Giacchino as well as liner notes from director J.A. Bayona.

Brian Mariotti, CEO of Funko, posted a message to fans of Mondo, the high-end collectibles company it acquired last year, after Mondo was hit with layoffs. As part of Funko’s 10% job cuts across the company, Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones as well as senior creative director Eric Garza were laid off last week.
In a Twitter post Thursday, Mariotti confirmed that there were layoffs at Mondo but said “the majority of the companywide layoffs weren’t in Mondo.” He also wrote that contrary to early reports last week that Mondo was shutting down the posters division, “the Mondo posters business will continue, period.”
That said, according to Mariotti, “We feel that making extremely limited runs of posters, most of which are 150 pieces or under, limits access to fans unfairly. Many of these posters are bought with the sole purpose of flipping them at a much higher cost...

Funko, the collectible toy company known for its popular Funko Pop figurines, has laid off a large chunk of staffers across its company, including roughly half the staff at the Austin-based poster and collectibles company Mondo, several individuals with knowledge of the layoffs told IndieWire.
IndieWire has confirmed reports first in TheWrap and Gizmodo‘s i09 on Friday that Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones, along with senior creative director Eric Garza, were among those let go earlier this week. Putnam and Jones led the poster division at Mondo. One of the individuals we spoke with said that cuts primarily impacted Mondo’s poster division, as well as headcount from the marketing team. Creative leads for soundtracks and collectibles still remain at the company.
While TheWrap initially reported that the poster division has been shuttered entirely, an individual told IndieWire that poster production will continue at the brand. While...

Funko, less than a year after acquiring high-end collectibles brand Mondo, has wound down Mondo’s current movie-poster business and let go several employees — including Mondo co-founders Mitch Putnam and Rob Jones, Variety has confirmed.
Mondo, based in Austin, Texas, was founded in 2004 and was previously a subsidiary of indie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse before Funko inked a deal to buy it last year for $14 million. Mondo had gained a strong following for its limited-edition screen-printed movie posters. Notable artists who worked with Mondo have included Olly Moss, Shepard Fairey, Ken Taylor and Kevin Tong. Sources said that Mondo’s vinyl records and collectibles businesses are intact.
In addition to Putnam and Jones, Mondo senior creative director Eric Garza also has been laid off. For now, it appears that Mondo’s poster division is defunct; however, a source familiar with the situation said Funko expects Mondo to continue producing posters going forward.

Treasure your Mondo posters even more now. They won’t be making any more… at all.
Earlier this week, Funko unceremoniously laid off most of the staff of Mondo, the Austin-based company whose distinctive and idiosyncratic movie posters, collectibles and records were the go-to ephemera for discerning movie-lovers, three individuals with knowledge told TheWrap.
They killed the poster division, which is a shock considering that’s how Mondo started, along with a division meant for cutting-edge experiences and products called The Lab, which was run by Mondo co-founder Rob Jones, who was also laid off during the process. One insider with knowledge suggested that the poster line could continue, but when pressed on whether the company will just be releasing posters already worked on by Jones, Putnam and Mondo creative director...

San Diego Comic-Con may be cancelled in its most ideal sense this year, but for the nerdy faithful who still want to bask in the community created by panels, cosplay, and swag, the dream lives on. And it’s just gone virtual with Sdcc’s Comic-Con@Home event later this week. In keeping with that ethos, Mondo, the indie tastemaking artwork company, has partnered with Sdcc for the exclusive products below.

Like some of the best illustrations that graced the covers of fantasy novels and heavy metal albums in the ’70s and ’80s, Arik Roper's artwork is a portal to another world brimming with adventure and endless possibilities. Ahead of his appearance as a featured artist at MondoCon 2016 this weekend in Austin, TX, we caught up with Roper for a special "Meet the Artist" Q&A feature, and we also have a look at some of the eye-popping artwork he'll be bringing to this year's MondoCon.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Arik. What sparked your initial interest in being an artist?
Arik Roper: It was a natural path for me, being an artist. Both my parents were artists. I was surrounded by it and I instinctively was drawn toward it, and received a lot of encouragement.
Your art often transports people deep into the realms of fantasy and horror.

Mondo has a new art coming up called Snikt. Bamf. Thwip: A Celebration of Marvel Comics and we have some cool illustrations from it to share with you. Some of our favorite heroes will be reimagined by popular artists, including Tom Whalen, Matt Taylor, Becky Cloonan, and Matthew Woodson.
When talking about the upcoming exhibit, Mondo Creative Director Mitch Putnam had this to say:
It’s probably no surprise that the Marvel Comics universe holds a special place in every Mondoer’s heart. These characters inspired us, helped to shape who we are, and taught us life lessons that stuck with us forever (our own Eric Garza still pretty much thinks he’s Wolverine). We excitedly asked a handful of artists to create posters for some of our favorite comic storylines and characters. We can’t wait for you to see everything.
