Netflix is developing a version of Hollywood studios’ longtime revenue generator, launching an online store for branded merchandise.
The boutique site, Netflix.shop, features items like Lupin throw pillows ($60), Yasuke anime hoodies designed by Hypwear’s Jordan Bentley ($74). While initial offerings are limited, the shop will soon expand to include items for shows like Bridgerton, Money Heist, The Witcher and Stranger Things. For now, the retail operation is up and running in the U.S. only, but it will reach global territories in the coming months, the company said.
Josh Simon, Netflix’s VP of consumer products, joined the company in 2020 after a stint at Nike. He addressed the store opening in a blog post. “We’re thrilled to give fans a new way to connect with their favorite stories,” he wrote, “and to introduce them to the next wave of artists and designers who embrace the power of storytelling in all its forms.

In a blog post, VP of consumer products Josh Simon said the company would “drop exclusive limited editions of carefully selected high-quality apparel and lifestyle products tied to our shows and brand on a regular basis.”
At launch, the company is introducing streetwear and action figures inspired by two anime series, Eden and Yasuke (pictured above). Netflix has tapped a former Nike executive to lead its consumer products division.
Josh Simon -- who formerly serves as Nike’s VP and head of global strategy for product, design, merchandising, and categories -- has joined the streaming giant as VP of consumer products. In this role, he will be charged with identifying and building plans across different product lines, and collaborating with content teams on brand and audience strategy, Variety reports.
Beginning March 2 and based in Los Angeles, Simon will oversee the division that has created toys, games, and apparel tied to hits like sci-fi thriller Stranger Things, the rom-com sequel To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, and the Spanish heist drama La Casa De Papel.
Simon replaces Christie Fleischer, who formerly served as Netflix’s global head of consumer products, per Variety, but who departed the company last summer to join Benefit Cosmetics as CEO.

We didn’t know it when docu-helmer Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, The Unknown Known) signed up for it last July, but by the looks of several industry players, he might have landed on the best screenplay of the bunch.
The annual “The Black List” unveiled its “favorite unproduced screenplays” of the year, and ranking at the top with a slim margin of a lead was Andrew Sodroski’s Holland, Michigan – a project that should begin lensing in April of next year with Naomi Watts possibly toplining. The second place top vote-getter got a lot more than a set of steak knifes this year. The out-of-nowhere, complete obscurity to huge pay day Section 6 by first time scribe Aaron Berg garnered huge interest towards the end of the year and should be jettisoned into production by the Universal folks – look for big name talent to be attached sometime in...

With all the mindless sequels and reboots that Hollywood has churned out over the last few years, it’s always nice when something original and well-written can break through and get a studio release. Unfortunately, many quality scripts can spend years without ever reaching the right executive to give it the green light. In an effort to make the process a little bit better, former production executive Franklin Leonard started The Black List in 2004. Today, the site announced its ninth annual list of the best unproduced scripts.
To come up with the list, nominations are received from over 250 executives. If a film gets 6 nominations, it gets a spot on the list. The more executives that nominate it, the higher on the list it is. Production for last year’s top film, Draft Day, is underway with the theatrical release scheduled for April, so there’s a pretty good chance that...
