From the second scene of Mortensen’s second feature, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” (following 2020’s excellent father-son drama “Following”), audiences know the fate of Vivienne LeCoudy (Vicky Krieps). A resilient French Canadian pioneer woman left alone for years, Vivienne dies at home in bed, a single tear making tracks on her dusty cheek. For no good reason, Mortensen opts to tell her story out of order, flashing back to Vivienne’s childhood (to show the character-defining disappearance of her fur-trapper father) and carrying on past her death to reveal whether her absentee partner (played by Mortensen) manages to avenge what happened to her.

The American Western may have long passed its heyday, but the genre has endured throughout the years. While the visuals and ideas it addresses may change, the basic foundation continues to draw fans. After all, where else can you pit man versus man versus the environment on such a large scale? The Dead Don’t Hurt seeks to continue this legacy. The sophomore feature from Viggo Mortensen finally debuts in America after hitting the fall festival circuit. Featuring an excellent performance from Vicky Krieps as its face, The Dead Don’t Hurt mostly plays like a traditional genre exercise. However, using an immigrant couple at its center speaks to the changing landscape in American life.
The Dead Don’t Hurt Plot
Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) passes away with her husband, Holger (Mortensen), at her side. At the same time, Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) requests Holger help bring a local crime to justice.

Viggo Mortensen needed just the right sword. Then he realized he had the perfect one at home.
Mortensen’s latest film is The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western set in the 1860s that follows free-spirited Vivienne (Vicky Krieps), a Franco-Canadian who falls in love with Holger (Mortensen), a Danish rancher. When Holger goes off to fight in the American Civil War, Vivienne is left alone to fight in her own war at home.
Mortensen spoke to British GQ to discuss his new film. It was mentioned that in one fantasy sequence, you can see what looks like his sword, Andúril, from Lord of the Rings.
“We had everything for this sequence with a knight. We had found this great, spirited horse, the right kind of saddle, and we made a medieval kind of blanket, and we had the costume for the knight,” Mortensen said. “Everything was right, and then I said,...

Damo Suzuki, the pioneering vocalist who served as the lead singer of Can from 1970 through 1973, has died. He was 74 years old.
Best remembered for helming the mic for Can through some of their most popular releases — including 1971’s Tago Mago, 1972’s Ege Bamyası, and 1973’s Future Days — Suzuki had an innovative and inimitable approach to singing, often improvising parts sung in a variety of languages (a blend he referred to as “the language of the Stone Age”).
“It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday 9th February 2024,” a statement posted by Can on Instagram read. “His boundless creative energy has touched so many over the whole world, not just with Can, but also with his all continent spanning Network Tour. Taylor Fritz was booed the last time he stood on a tennis court, and he explained the whole Atp Finals situation recently.
Taylor Fritz officially debuted at the Atp Finals in Turin last year when he found himself among the Top 8 players that year. He didn't do the same thing this year but found himself in Turin as an alternate.
The American even got a chance to play at the event, though it was an exhibition match. Stefanos Tsisipas withdrew after only three games against Holger Rune, which had the organizers panicking because the crowd was not happy.
T hey quickly got the alternates Hurkacz and Fritz to play a set of tennis instead, though that didn't go too well either because Fritz still dealt with injuries, and couldn't give his best.
He explained how it looked from his point of view in a recent Twitch stream because many weren't...

Taylor Fritz spoke about his colleague on the Atp Tour, Holger Rune, and how some of the fans mistake his confidence for cockiness and arrogance.
Rune is one of the most polarizing tennis players to emerge in recent years. You either love everything about him, or you absolutely hate everything about him. There is very little in between when it comes to the Dane and the way he approaches things.
His whole tennis is based upon his tremendous confidence, which allows him to hit some incredible shots that leave you wondering whether it was even possible. That confidence is perceived as cockiness by many, which isn't surprising.
There is a fine line between those, but for Fritz, it's the former. He knows Rune, having beaten him in Miami this year, and he has no problem with anything he does. They even teamed up for doubles before, which indicates that they get along fine,...

Boris Becker has signed the dotted line to take over as Holger Rune's full-time coach for the 2024 season after confirming an extension to their initial agreement.
Becker's confirmation comes just a couple of days from the official announcement by Rune's camp, which was done in writing by the Dane's mother, Aneke Rune. In her statement, Aneke was happy that they found a "good setup" through Becker's expertise for Holger to develop as a player.
The German great was initially assigned a temporary role in the team to cushion and salvage Rune's 2023 season following the dismissal of Patrick Mouratoglou as coach. Rune confirmed that his alliance with Becker was meant to last until the end of the season.
Becker's first main task at the helm was to turn around Rune's famine run of one win in 11 matches across all competitions, which he did at the first time of asking in Basel.

Holger Rune will retain the services of Boris Becker as his coach for the next season, with the pair coming to an agreement to extend their partnership.
Rune's mother, Aneke, who serves as his manager, revealed the announcement in writing to TV2 Sport, adding that both parties are satisfied to continue working together for the upcoming season.
In Becker, Aneke states that they've found a "good setup" that will enable Rune to develop as a player. The 20-year-old was grateful for the transformation he had undergone in just a few months taking guidance from the German great.
"We look forward to continuing the good work in the preseason and 2024 with our team, with whom we will also end the year. I am delighted that we have found a good setup where Holger is happy and can develop so that we can once again set goals and aim to win Grand Slams.

Jannik Sinner felt something in his lower back during his match against Holger Rune at the 2023 Atp Finals, but he reassured everyone after the match that he was fine.
Jannik Sinner finished off the group stage of the Atp Finals last night with a really solid win over Holger Rune. It wasn't a match he needed to win, but he did it anyway, earning himself more points and prize money while also ensuring that Novak Djokovic would play in the semi-finals as well.
It was a fair match from Sinner, who played really well for much of it but felt something in the second set. It didn't seem like an injury because he continued to play the match, but something did happen.
He spoke about it after the match, confirming that he felt something in his back, but ultimately it's nothing major, and he's good to go.

Novak Djokovic has plenty of experience playing against the crowd, but the Italian fans on Tuesday night at the 2023 Atp Finals in Turin were something else.
Indoor tennis is always very special because it's a rather intimate affair. Everybody in a closed-off room makes the experience quite a bit bigger than usual, and it's partly why the Davis Cup is generally played indoors.
It makes the whole crowd experience much better for everybody involved, and the players could certainly feel it last night. Sinner felt the overwhelming support while Djokovic got heavily booed often. It's nothing new for him and he saw the funny side more than a few times during the match.
After the match, though, he gave his verdict on the crowd experience, calling it expected as he was facing an Italian in Italy. The Italians are known to be very supportive, but that's the case with most crowds.

Holger Rune is very close to his mother, but she understands that, eventually, her son won't talk to her about everything.
Rune has a very strong bond with his mother , and it comes from the fact that she travels to Atp events with him. It's always been like that as the family settled on his mother being the one to accompany him at events while his father remained home.
He did join them a few times, but if you followed him, you'd know that it's usually his team and his mother in the stands. It's a nice bond that works really well for them but eventually, it will be replaced by something else.
She spoke about that in the Atp Tennis Radio Podcast , explaining her thoughts on Rune essentially growing up in the coming years.
At some point, I think there will be a girlfriend he can talk to and...

The mother of Holger Rune believes it's only a matter of time before her son finally fulfills his goal of winning a Grand Slam.
Holger Rune had his major breakout last year with some amazing performances throughout the year. It all culminated during the European Indoor season where he won a couple of trophies including the Stockholm Open and the Paris Masters.
The latter came after he beat Novak Djokovic in the final which was a huge win for Rune and it allowed him to debut in the Top 10 on the Atp Tour. Since then, it's been a steady rise further to the top, but he's yet to win a Grand Slam.
His mother, Aneke Rune, spoke to the Atp Tennis Radio Podcast , admitting that, slowly but surely, Rune is fulfilling his goals.

I remember hearing Viggo Mortensen on an episode of Here’s The Thing with Alec Baldwin where he came off as the rare combination of pretentious but likable. A man who carried himself as an intelligent, soft-spoken guy who liked arthouse movies and votes Green Party, he had just the right amount of movie-star charisma to pull off his slightly self-satisfied air. So essentially I want to root for the guy, especially when tackling moviemaking.
For a second I thought he was capitalizing on it in his second directorial effort. The opening two shots of The Dead Don’t Hurt showed some promise: 1) a man riding horseback in knight’s armor, followed by 2) a long take fixating on a dying Vicky Krieps’ face. From there I thought Mortensen was maybe, as director, smuggling a surrealism and slow cinema inspired by collaborator Lisandro Alonso into TIFF-premiere filler. Yet that mystery and formal precision soon ends.

Vicky Krieps and Viggo Mortensen are unleashing original Western film “The Dead Don’t Hurt” this fall festival season.
Slated as a feminist take on the genre, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” is premiering at 2023 TIFF and marks lead star Mortensen’s sophomore effort as a director following his 2020 debut “Falling.” The logline for “The Dead Don’t Hurt” teases that Mortensen and Krieps “try and survive the corruption in a tough Nevada town” in the 1860s. Mortensen writes, directs, and acts in the film centered on two immigrants forging a new life on the frontier.
The full synopsis reads: “French-Canadian flower seller Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) and Danish carpenter Holger Olsen (Mortensen) meet in San Francisco. Vivienne is irreverent, fiercely independent, and refuses to wed, but agrees to travel with Holger to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada. Coco Gauff played in the Roland Garros final last year but her chances of repeating it this year look rather slim.
Gauff hasn't played that well in recent weeks or this year in general. There have been many matches where she disappointed with her level seemingly stuck without improving much. The forehand is a very glaring weakness and players are aware of it.
She'll need that weapon in her arsenal if she wants to get where she wants to and perhaps Patrick Mouratoglou could help her with that. The French coach is a very prominent face in the tennis community helping several players elevate their game.
He's been spotted in her box in Rome and even in Madrid and when asked about it ahead of Paris, Gauff confirmed that he's been helping her out in the past few weeks. He'll be with her during the Roland Garros stretch as well.

Novak Djokovic's former coach Boris Becker believes the Serbian player is in contention to win at this season's Roland Garros.
Since winning his tenth Australian Open in January, Djokovic's 2023 season has become disrupted by a drop in form and ongoing injury issues. After success in Melbourne, Djokovic reached the Dubai Championship semi-final and more recently lost in the Italian Open quarter-final against Holger Rune.
As a result, there are question marks about whether the 36-year-old is capable of playing himself into contention at the 2023 French Open. However, Becker, who coached Djokovic for three years between 2013 and 2016, said in an interview with the Guardian that the 22-time Grand Slam winner will always be one of the favourites at the majors.
