E! has ordered its first scripted drama, The Royals, about a British royal family with Elizabeth Hurley starring.
Lana! Lana! Laaaaaana! Guess who got renewed? Yep, FX has ordered a sixth and seventh season of the hilarious Archer.
In disappointing news, the BBC is shutting down BBC Three. Why should U.S. viewers care about this decision? BBC Three is the source of a good number of shows that developed loyal followings stateside like Gavin & Stacey, Being Human, Little Britain, and Torchwood. The channel will continue as a streaming video channel, but celebrities like Matt Lucas are already campaigning to save the channel.
I’m not sure how I feel about the news, as reported by EW, that Isaiah Washington will return to Grey’s Anatomy. At first I was angry, but it’s a one-episode appearance as part of Sandra Oh‘s exit from the series. I guess...

It seems James Franco is now the hardest-working man in show-business -- if you look back at his 2013, that is.
Franco's multi-tasking started to seem like a Joaquin Phoenix-style put-on a couple years ago; not only was he writing, directing, and starring in various films, but he was also, it seemed, studying for graduate degrees at several universities at once. But then, it became apparent that he really was spreading himself too thin when he practically fell asleep onstage while co-hosting the 2011 Oscars. He took a lot of flak for that, but he hardly seems to have lessened his pace.
Indeed, the Oscar jokes ceased once Franco returned to the good graces of moviegoers with the 2013 smash "Oz the Great and Powerful."
According to IMDb, Franco worked on some 49 film and TV projects in 2013, and while many of those were just guest spots on talk shows, that still means that,...

Director and cinematographer Christina Voros nicely summed up the difference between the fashion industry and the film industry at the Tribeca Film Institute’s Fashion in Film event Friday: “Fashion is sort of antithetical to film. The fashion industry is all about making sure the seams don’t show, that every thread is in place. Documentary is about pulling on the threads until it unravels.” She was speaking of the process of filming her second documentary feature The Director, about Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini, but the sentiment was reflected in films and discussions throughout the two-day event. Fighting for a promotion in one of the world’s largest and most well-known fashion houses means not only obtaining creative control over the brand’s line, but also receiving the attention for having the ability to maintain the company. But Gucci’s creative director, Frida Giannini, would much rather forgo the glamor and publicity of working for such a respected brand, and instead keep her personal and professional lives separate. To showcase the director’s equally creative and private lives, filmmaker Christina Voros helmed the new documentary, The Director: An Evolution in Three Acts, which maintains Giannini’s delicate balance of successfully doing her work, without constantly thriving on the press and publicity that surrounds the company.
The Director, which is split into three sections, including The Past, The Future and The Present, follows Giannini after she joined the House of Gucci in 2004 to take charge of the women’s accessories department.

Filmmaker Christina Voros' latest documentary, "The Director," delves head first into the world of high-end fashion, going behind the scenes of Gucci. Thanks to her friendship with James Franco, Voros gained unprecedented access to the Italian heritage brand, providing insight into the secretive design process and showing audiences an intimate portrait of Gucci's media-shy creative director, Frida Giannini.
We caught up with Voros just after the film's Tribeca Film Festival premiere.
Why did you choose to make a documentary about Gucci?
The project came to me through James [Franco]. He and I had been working together for a number of years and, actually, he had been working with Gucci for the same period of time, looking back. And we had been at an event in Rome with Frida [Giannini]. Gucci and Frida helped restore a print of "La Dolce Vita," and he was at that event. He was coming to Paris...

Continuing to enjoy the success of his acting career, James Franco made an appearance at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival yesterday (April 21) in New York City.
The "Spring Breakers" star rocked a pinstripe blue-and-white suit as he presented the trailer of his documentary "The Director," which he produced. The film surrounds the story of Gucci creative director Frida Giannini.
While discussing the film, Frida dished about how the documentary came to be. "The idea of the documentary was really born out of a provocation. James Franco and I were asked to interview each other for a special magazine feature and what I asked him, 'What's your next project?' he replied, 'to make a documentary about you.' I thought it was his dry sense of humor at play, but then somehow the provocation became reality."
"It is difficult coming to terms with multiple cameras following you everywhere and being wired for sound.

The Tribeca Film Festival hasn’t exactly been synonymous with documentaries, even if they opened with one the other night -- “Mistaken for Strangers,” Tom Berninger’s off-beat take on his brother’s band, The National.Still, as has been pointed out everywhere, this year’s festival possesses one heaping humongous motherlode of nonfiction bio pics strewn across the next ten days -- including films on Gore Vidal, Wilt Chamberlain, Muhammad Ali, Richard Pryor, Gore Vidal, and Michael Haneke. But there’s also a giant, glowing mass of pictures about lesser-known quantities, and many of them are women -- House of Gucci head Frida Giannini (“The Director”); Rutgers basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer (the short “The Coach”); the late comedienne Moms Mabley (“I Got Somethin’ to Tell You”); “Kiss the Water” on fly-fisherwoman extraordinaire Megan Boyd (Scottish angling consultant to (Prince Charles); Pat Summitt, the ex-Tennessee coach who got Alzheimer’s,...

The latest fashion documentary, "The Director," takes us behind the scenes of not just the world renowned Italian brand Gucci, but of the powerful woman behind it. Produced by busy man James Franco -- who was the face of Gucci a few years back -- and directed by Christina Voros ("Kink"), the film makes its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival Thursday, April 18th. In the film's new trailer Frida Giannini, the quiet yet decisive creative director of the House of Gucci, says she never thought she would become the driving force behind the fashion label. Beginning in the women's accessories department in 2004, Giannini moved up to the position that would usher Gucci into a new era. "The Director" gives an intimate glimpse into how the brand's models, designs, and shows stem from Giannini's vision to return to Gucci's Florentine roots. "The seduction and the sensuality is always an...

Christina Voros has lived many lives. She grew up in the restaurant business, started bartending at 16, moved to Hungary to train with their national fencing team, studied poetry and theater at Harvard, became a gardener on Nantucket, ran a northern Italian restaurant in Boston and then decided to pursue a masters degree in acting. Somehow this all lead to a fellowship at Nyu's grad film school which she says changed the course of her life completely and lead her to beginning work as a cinematographer in 2005. She merges her many experiences throughout her career and "The Director" is no different, as her own family's work in the fashion industry drew her to the project. What it's about: An intimate portrait of Gucci’s Creative Director, Frida Giannini, "The Director" spans 18 months behind the walls of the iconic Italian fashion house, exploring the intricacies and inspiration behind the quietly brilliant power woman,...
