Renowned for his brilliant storytelling and cinematic prowess, filmmaker Steven Spielberg has encountered his fair share of critiques and box office jitters throughout his illustrious career. However, when it came to the 2022 film, The Fabelmans, he was anxious not for anticipated reviews or ticket sales, but due to the impending reaction of his family members.

Inspired by his own life, the film follows Gabriel Labelle as Sammy Fabelman, the sixteen-year-old son of The Fabelmans family, who dreams of becoming a filmmaker. It explores the protagonist’s family dynamics, friendships, and his love for filmmaking, and the acclaimed director later admitted to being extremely nervous when it came to screening the film for his sisters.

Steven Spielberg‘s feature The Fabelmans was welcomed with critical praise when it first hit theaters. The movie was inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood, and his love for cinema at a young age. Initially, however, Spielberg wondered if the movie would’ve only amounted to a therapy session.

Spielberg has made a variety of movies over the course of his career. And despite how different one film might be from the other, the filmmaker confided they all represented him.
“Every one of my movies is a personal movie,” Spielberg told CBS in a 2022 interview. “I don’t make films that I don’t consider to have something of myself left behind in them.”
But The Fabelmans wasn’t just personal for Spielberg. It was the director’s autobiography reflecting on his discovery of film, and how that shaped his childhood.

The logline for Snack Shack—two teenaged best friends spend the summer of 1991 working at a community pool food stand and get up to shenanigans—suggests a hyper-generic “one crazy summer”-type coming-of-age flick, but the film distinguishes itself with specifics almost immediately. It opens with Aj (Connor Sherry) and Moose (Gabriel Labelle) at an off-track betting parlor intently watching the races with lit cigarettes dangling from their mouths. They exchange gambling strategies and profane insults before deciding to bet their new winnings on one more long-shot race. They hit big, but upon leaving they see someone swipe their cab, making it […]

McPherson, who uses they/them pronouns, will make their acting debut as singer-songwriter Janis Ian, a musical guest on the first episode of SNL that aired Oct. 11, 1975. Snack Shack is a movie written and directed by Adam Rehmeier starring Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle.
Like déjà vu, “Snack Shack” takes us back once again to adolescence and its familiar scenarios like growing up, friendships, the awakening of love, and money.
A film that charmingly transports us back to the 90s with a stylish photographic flair and solid performances from its two main leads… And not much more.
About the movie
Adolescence, yet again summer adolescence in a film that serves as a refreshing spring moment, and rather stays there: in a comedy that doesn’t quite want to be a full-fledged comedy and in a relationship of common landscapes that, while pleasant, are unvaryingly repetitive (we’ve seen the same movie for several generations now).
A proper recreation of the 90s that catches the eye with photography, shot in tones of the era that today, the younger ones might say,...

Astrakan (David Depesseville)
Astrakhan fur is unique: dark, beautiful, and stripped exclusively from newborn lambs, even ones killed in their mother’s womb. (Stella McCarthy once said it’s like wearing a fetus.) That ruthlessness—a sense of lost innocence; blood sacrifice—runs deep in Astrakan, a new film from France and one of the better in Locarno this year; and if that title isn’t enough to give pause, plenty else in the opening exchanges will. The first act is a procession of flags, both red and false: at the opening the protagonist, Samuel, lightly goads a snake in the reptile house of a zoo; moments later a rabbit is hung and skinned in his kitchen with all the ceremony of...

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan conducted an extensive series of interviews with the living cast, writers and crew of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live, which aired on October 11, 1975 on NBC and has been going ever since. The result of their efforts is Sony Pictures’ upcoming SNL 1975, a movie retelling the story of that night.
The pic, which Reitman and Kenan co-wrote and which Reitman is directing, tells the chaotic behind-the-scenes story of what happened that first night, just before the live cameras clicked on to launch a late-night institution and a slew of eventual stars among the young, mostly unknown troupe of comedians including John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner, all under the watchful eye of creator Lorne Michaels.

Can you remember how you spent your childhood summers? Were they by the pool eating concession stand junk? Biking everywhere you went? Fist-fighting your best friend? Falling for a girl from out of town? Something along those lines? Or maybe you just saw a movie like that. That kind of easy familiarity is what teen comedy “Snack Shack” comfortably sets up shop on. Armed with a talented cast, writer-director Adam Rehmeier’s 1991-set feature happily squares itself in a tradition of teenage hedonism and broad learning opportunities, settling into a generic but warm glow.
Early-20s actors Conor Sherry and Gabriel Labelle lead the film, stretching the laws of verisimilitude playing 14-year-old best friends, but emerging plausibly teenaged with their lame-brain rapport. The two play Aj and Moose, a pair of hustlers hunting for their next score after home-brewing a “drinkable as fuck” beer. When the friendly college-aged lifeguard Shane...

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)
But in recent years, the...

Paramount has revealed the trailer for a comedy titled Snack Shack, a 90s throwback coming-of-age adventure about two best friends get the chance to run the swimming pool snack shack. The two affable screw-ups decide to invest in a poolside Snack Shack in an effort to make some quick cash and strike it rich. However, the pair gets sidetracked by a beautiful and effortlessly cool lifeguard named Brooke, and their own propensity for getting into trouble. It's described as "a nostalgic journey for those who came of age before the era of cell phones, and a hilarious escape for those who wish they had." Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.

While they've been focused on their Ghostbusters films of late, with the newest, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire less than two months away now, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan have also been putting the pieces together for something that draws on no little amount of nostalgia (not to mention a connection to Dan Aykroyd): SNL 1975, about the fraught first night of Saturday Night Live. The duo (with Reitman directing and Kenan writing) have built the cast and are now adding Lamorne Morris, Dylan O’Brien, Cory Michael Smith and Matt Wood to the line-up.

Saturday Night Live will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, which will also mark the 49th anniversary of the first person to complain that the show isn’t as funny as it used to be. Jason Reitman is set to helm a Saturday Night Live movie about the broadcast of the very first show, and Deadline reports that the project has found its Lorne Michaels.
Gabriel Labelle, who broke out as the star of Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, is set to play Lorne Michaels in the Saturday Night Live movie. With the exception of a five-year period in the 1980s, Michaels has produced the show since its inception and will continue to do so until he (possibly) turns the reigns over to Tina Fey. Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) has also signed on to play NBC producer Dick Ebersol in the movie, with Rachel Sennot (Shiva Baby) playing SNL writer Rosie Shuster.

The late night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" is still going strong. The series is currently in the middle of its 49th season, and word on the street is that there's quite the celebration around the corner for the show's 50th anniversary, which will come around this fall. There have been rumblings that series creator and longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels may step down from his post at "SNL" when the 50th season is over, but there hasn't been any confirmation just yet, even though Tina Fey seems to be primed to take the gig if that happens. However, there's another big "SNL" event coming soon too, in the form of a movie about the show's premiere on October 11, 1975.
Last spring, Sony Pictures set director Jason Reitman to direct "SNL 1975," a movie that will chronicle the real-time, behind-the-scenes chaos and miraculous magic leading right up to the show's debut on NBC.

Justin Timberlake will return to “Saturday Night Live” in the wake of backlash following ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ shocking memoir “The Woman in Me.”
In the memoir, Spears alleged Timberlake encouraged her to have an abortion, among other revelations about their relationship. Spears also recounted a cringe encounter between Timberlake and Ginuwine; the audiobook narration of the exchange went viral thanks to Oscar winner Michelle Williams’ accent impersonating Timberlake. (Smart money is on Timberlake appearing in a sketch about this in some form.)
The Emmy and Grammy-winning musician will appear in the January 27 episode of “Saturday Night Live” with Dakota Johnson hosting. Johnson will be promoting her upcoming superhero film “Madame Web.”
In 2023, Timberlake reunited with *Nsync band members for animated film “Trolls Band Together.” Timberlake also recently appeared in Benicio Del Toro’s “Reptile.”
The “Social Network” star will take the “SNL” stage for his fifth solo musical guest appearance.

Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) is attached as former NBC executive Dick Ebersol, while Sennott (Bottoms) will play Michaels’ ex-wife Rosie Shuster.
Reitman wrote the script with Gil Kenan, based on the pair’s extensive interviews with all of the show’s living cast, scribes and crew. Reitman and Kenan previously co-wrote Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its forthcoming sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hits theaters in March.

“Twin Peaks” director David Lynch loves a damn fine cup of coffee in the morning, but he also loves a bag of Cheetos in his dressing room.
The Oscar-nominated “Mulholland Drive” filmmaker recently spoke with Empire Magazine about his role in Steven Spielberg’s 2022 memoir movie “The Fabelmans.” In the Best Picture-nominated film, Lynch cameos as director John Ford in the last scene, offering sage advice to rookie filmmaker Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel Labelle) about why a horizon should never sit in the center of a frame. “John Ford probably had a bunch of things he could call on to give a short education to that young lad. But he picked the horizon bit,” Lynch said. “But it’s true. A horizon in the middle is boring as shit.”
Lynch, as he reiterates in the Empire interview, initially did not want to star in the film. But we know from last...
