Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.
The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.

Writer-director-star Alex Heller’s debut feature is a fictive spin on the very crisis she experienced at age 19, when she dropped out of college and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Not the weightiest screen treatment of a serious mental health issue, this drolly self-deprecating portrayal nonetheless achieves a degree of poignancy and depth within a distinctive sensibility you might call Midwestern Sardonic. After a fest run, it’s opening in limited theaters and on demand March 3.
Clemence Miller (Heller) screams “trainwreck” from the moment we first see her dragging a garbage bag across campus, haranguing everyone whose path she crosses. She then turns that alienating energy on her terrified dorm roommate (Taylor Marie Blim), who says, “You’re ruining my college experience!” The roomie has, it turns out, already informed Clem’s mother that she has spiraled into “hoarding, stealing, paranoia and shrieking.” Ergo Sherri (J. Director Tate Taylor (The Help) was looking to make a movie for Octavia Spencer that would allow her to do something different than anything she’s ever done before. So, they teamed up to develop a new horror thriller called Ma.
The story centers on a lonely middle-aged woman who ends up befriending a group of teenage friends and letting them party in her basement. The relationship she starts to have with these kids becomes an obsession to her and it eventually turns into a terrifying ordeal for these teens as she starts to stalk them and as you’ve seen in the trailers… torture them.
Personally, I think they gave a little too much away in the trailers for the movie, but there are a few surprises and story twists that are revealed as the story unfolds. The movie is a fun horror-filled ride, though, and it’s one...

A Cult Classic is born! And I don’t use that term loosely. I’ve been emceeing the midnight shows here in St. Louis at Landmark’s The Tivoli Theater for a decade now and if Ma finds the audience it deserves, I can totally see it playing there in a year or two with an inebriated audience screaming its many memorable lines back at the screen. “Don’t make me drink alone!” could become the new “No more wire hangers!”
Octavia Spencer stars in Ma as Sue Ann (aka Ma), a 50-ish veterinary assistant who keeps to herself in a peaceful rural Ohio town. One afternoon, Ma is confronted in a liquor store parking lot by Maggie (Diana Silvers), a teen who’s just moved to town with her mother (Juliette Lewis) who asks her to buy alcohol for her and her new pals. Ma sees this as the chance to make some younger,...

The great Octavia Spencer, a three-time Oscar nominee and winner for The Help, recently decried the fact that starring roles in horror films have long been unfairly denied to women of color (Lupita Nyong’o in Us being an outstanding exception). So it’s a kick to see Spencer dig into the title role in Ma, a Blumhouse scarefest that tries but rarely lives up to the irresistible dynamo at its center.

As the title character of “Ma,” Octavia Spencer goes at the role of a friendly-on-the-outside, crazy-on-the-inside desperate stalker-pest in a way that befits a world-class actress who has chosen to star in a pumped-up B-movie. She does all she can to play the character as a real human being, and that accomplishes two things: It puts a bit of flesh on the clever/dumb bones of this Blumhouse production — a teen-flick variation on “Fatal Attraction,” with distant glimmers of “Carrie” as well as “Misery” and other revenge-of-the-nerd stalker thrillers. At the same time, Spencer’s humanity only makes the character seem that much creepier, which is a good thing.
You can’t take “Ma” seriously. It’s a squalid formula picture that’s too busy connecting dots, hitting beats, engineering situations designed to make you squirm. But you will squirm. And though even the youngest sector of the demo for...

A new horror series, Chambers, is now streaming on Netflix, which is exciting for a number of reasons. While it's not the same type of eerie familial horror that launched The Haunting of Hill House to near-instant success, it's still a solid, creepy story that only gets weirder with each subsequent episode. The series follows a teenage heart attack survivor, Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose), who soon finds her life entangled with that of her heart donor's family in increasingly sinister ways. It won't take long before you have one question repeating over and over again in your mind: what, exactly, is wrong with Sasha's new heart?
Warning: Spoilers for season one of Chambers to follow, so proceed with caution!
The answer isn't black and white. To be blunt, there's a lot of stuff wrong with the organ, but everything comes down to the young, troubled woman whose life had to...

“Chambers,” Netflix’s new horror series, doesn’t have much going for it — it’s a grody, nasty piece of work, a story that would at least be endurable if it were the under-ninety-minute movie it seems to want to be. But it does boast the casting of both Tony Goldwyn (in his first post-”Scandal” role) and Uma Thurman, two stars that might not have signed on to a version of this story that didn’t have the patina of prestige that comes with an overlong season on streaming. Too bad for them: They’re stranded in a story that goes nowhere fast, reliant on cheap scares with nothing behind them.
The story is frustrating in part because it seems to be saying something at its outset. Sasha (Sivan Alyra Rose) is a pleasantly typical American girl — dutiful but free-spirited in predictable proportion — before she suffers cardiac arrest and receives a transplanted heart,...

Yes, the new Netflix series “Chambers” centers on Sasha, a young woman (Sivan Alyra Rose) who begins to see visions of another existence after she receives a life-changing heart transplant. Uma Thurman co-stars as the mother of the dead teenager whose heart was donated and whose memories seem to be seeping into the present.
But let’s talk about one particularly horrifying shot in this trailer that Netflix put out on Wednesday. The image of Tony Goldwyn, playing a grieving father, heavy breathing in some sort of minimalist interior decor nightmare is an indication that this show is not messing around. (The multiple images of young teenage girls bleeding from their mouths might be another.)
To paraphrase the great American poet Joey Tribbiani, these people appear to be having some issues with their full-sized aortic pumps. Sure, everyone processes loss in different ways, but this hints that not everyone is...

There are times when you watch a newcomer in a role and know, just know, that they’ll go on to tackle great, eclectic challenges; with “Call Me By Your Name” still in moviegoers’ rearview mirrors, Timothee Chalamet, for example, is already proving himself an enormous, versatile talent. But other times, such as with Richie Merritt, the star of “White Boy Rick,” you’re no less transfixed, but you wonder: Is this young actor simply perfect in this one role? Or can he countenance others with that beautifully, ordinarily dull expression? While there isn’t a single moment in his performance that doesn’t feel utterly believable, it also seems singularly engineered for this character and this one alone.
“White Boy Rick,” director Yann Demange’s account of the young, wasted life of real-life teen drug dealer and FBI informant Richard Wershe Jr., is punctuated by surprising verisimilitude that uplifts...
