Prohibited from reporting on Hollywood by her lucrative settlement with new Indiewire owner Penske Media, Finke has been focusing on finding material for her short fiction website Hollywood Dementia ("Come for the cynicism, stay for the subversion"), which went live last August. Her highest-profile get so far should pique any fan of Robert Altman's jet-black 1992 classic "The Player," which was adapted by screenwriter Michael Tolkin from his own novel. On Monday, Tolkin debuted his latest work, excerpted in-progress, on Finke's site. After its launch, Hollywood Dementia dispensed with its initial Andrew Sullivan-style TinyPass model of requiring readers to pay $1 to $3 per story and moved toward an advertising model, because the studios still seek Finke's sizable fan base (288k Twitter followers and counting). Andrew Sullivan, who recently announced his retirement from blogging, spoke out Sunday about the reasons he quit his prolific writing career. One revelation from Sullivan concerned the timing of his retirement: “I couldn’t imagine blogging the next election,” he said. “I will not spend another minute of my time writing about the Clintons. Period. Or the Bushes.” He also talked about practical health reasons behind his decision to quit blogging, saying the nonstop pace of it started to take a mortal toll. “CNN” anchor Anderson Cooper and gay activists are voicing their support for gay code breaker Alan Turing, depicted in the award-winning “The Imitation Game.”
The Weinstein Company released a statement announcing Lgbt supporters in entertainment, fashion and the media have praised Turing, a pivotal code breaker during World War II who was also ostracized for his sexuality.
“Incredible story of injustice against a gay genius who cracked Nazi code in World War II saving millions,” Cooper said of Turing. Cooper’s praise comes more than two years after he confirmed his much-speculated-about sexuality in an email to Daily Beast columnist Andrew Sullivan.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-ky) surprised Bill Maher Friday night by arguing in favor of the U.S. military's intervention in Iraq to stop the spread of Isis. But if there was a real isolationist on the show last night, it was blogger Andrew Sullivan, who came out strongly against any action in the Middle East saying it is not America's problem.

Last Friday, Ben Affleck got into a widely remarked-upon spat with Bill Maher during an appearance on the latter’s Real Time. Maher had chastised liberals for their reluctance to denounce Islam. Affleck angrily told Maher that his views were “racist” and “gross.” We’ve seen this dance before. Since his first appearance in 2005, Affleck has been a guest on Real Time seven times, frequently butting heads with conservative blowhards like Ann Coulter and P.J. O’Rourke. He also pretty reliably blows a gasket — just like he did last week. That kind of indignation is what Maher's show lives on, and Ben Affleck delivers it very, very well. Here, a quick rundown of the actor's best Real Time rants. 2005 Appearing with Salman Rushdie and Andrew Sullivan, Affleck gets into it with Maher after the host suggests people of religious faith are unintelligent. “People of faith aren’t stupid by...

Ever heard of the The Yes Men? Activist and filmmaker Andy Bichlbaum and his colleagues go about the country pretending to be official representatives of Exxon, The Chamber of Commerce, Halliburton etc. Then they hold fake press conferences and the like and film the public relations mayhem for whatever organization they’ve targeted. Anderson Cooper and Seth Meyers could've made a cute couple—if they batted for the same team, that is. The TV journalist appeared on NBC's Late Night Monday, where he recalled his first meeting with Meyers many years ago. According to Cooper, they first crossed paths at "the gayest gym on the planet. And I assumed you were gay, because there weren't a lot of other reasons to be there." "This was before you officially came out," Meyers said. "So I assumed it was straight because you were there." Cooper, 46, publicly announced he was gay via an open letter to Andrew Sullivan in July 2012. He noted that there were multiple levels of the gym, and Meyers seemed afraid to...

Alec Baldwin has decided it's time to leave the public eye. But he's not doing something crazy, like retiring from acting to start a beet farm. No, Baldwin writes in a lengthy piece for New York Magazine (via Vulture) that he's lived the public life for 30 years and he's "done with it." He wants to go "back to being an actor now."
That means he's thinking about leaving New York -- it's too in-your-face, he writes. Baldwin says he now actually prefers what he used to hate about Los Angeles: "You live behind a gate, you get in a car, your interaction with the public is minimal."
Baldwin also says this is the last time he'll speak to an American publication about his personal life. So he has decided to go out with a bang, apparently. In his giant kiss-off to the world, Baldwin can't help but take a few shots at people.

And even though every minute I spend doing this means I’m not watching movies and writing reviews. (Sherlock! I could be writing about the new Sherlocks now, which I haven’t done yet.

The change underscores the business news company’s determination to develop its new media platforms. Justin Smith became a digital superstar at Atlantic Media, best known for its respected monthly magazine The Atlantic. Through a series of online initiatives, the former publisher of The Week and head of corporate strategy for The Economist Group helped Atlantic Media connect with audiences who care about ideas as well as news — something that Bloomberg also is trying to do at Bloomberg BusinessWeek and its opinion/op-ed destination Bloomberg View. Smith made the Atlantic a forum for important voices including James Fallows and Andrew Sullivan, and used the magazine’s site as a launching pad for digital ventures including a business news and analysis destination, Quartz, and Defense One. At Bloomberg he’ll report to CEO Daniel Doctoroff and oversee television, print, radio, syndication, mobile, events and digital media properties. “I’ve long admired...

Blogger Andrew Sullivan thinks formal legal action should be taken against Alec Baldwin following the 30 Rock actor’s extreme, homophobic, and (frankly) crazed tweets about Daily Mail journalist George Stark. Stark had alleged that Baldwin’s wife Hilaria was tweeting while in attendance at James Gandolfini‘s funeral, and Baldwin found that finding erroneous and — apparently — grounds for a multi-tweet tirade and attack. Here are Baldwin’s (now deleted) tweets about the event, listed in reverse chronology.
(Source)
Said Sullivan:
“He knew the target was gay, and threatened to beat him up, and urged others – up to a million others who follow his tweets – to beat him up. Why, I wonder, has Baldwin not been arrested? In my view, George Stark should press charges. Bigoted bullies like Baldwin need to know that their stardom (and their ‘liberal’ past) does not excuse this. Kids are brutalized by this kind of language...

Blogger Andrew Sullivan is both a gay man and a Roman Catholic, and he believes that it shouldn't be that difficult for fellow Catholics to accept gay marriage. He argued that divorce is certainly frowned upon in the Bible, and that if Catholics can accept divorce as just a natural part of life for some people, they should also be able to accept the rights of gay and lesbian Americans to get married.

Anderson Cooper 360 may have had a new format at 10 Pm on CNN this week, but it didn’t have many viewers. The new panel-style show that ran Monday-Thursday was the least-watched broadcast on cable news in the time slot and the second-lowest in the adults 25-54 demographic. The show had a coatless Cooper debating with permanent panelists Amy Holmes of The Blaze, CNN’s Jeffery Tobin and Christiane Amanpour, plus Andrew Sullivan, Anthony Bourdain, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleisher, and ex-Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria joining on separate days. On average over the week, the revamped AC 360 garnered 503,000 viewers, and 167,000 in the demo. In terms of viewership, the latest experiment of the Jeff Zucker regime was behind Fox News’ On The Record (1.436 million viewers/206,000 in demo), MSNBC’s Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell (654,000 viewers/146,000 in demo) and CNN sister station Hln’s After Dark (588,000 viewers/194,000 in demo), according to Nielsen.

On Saturday, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation held its media awards ceremony. Among the winners were NBC's Debra Messing-starring musical Smash, which won for best drama series, and CBS's The Amazing Race, which won best reality series thanks to a big, prime time sex-same kiss by its winning couple in December. AIDS chronicle How to Survive a Plague took home the Outstanding Documentary prize, while director Brett Ratner was given the Ally Award for his work on a PSA called "Coming Out for Equality" (which was made after he told a bunch of people that "rehearsal is for fags.") And finally, Anderson Cooper was given the Vito Russo Award for coming out on Andrew Sullivan's blog year. The prize was presented by Madonna, who wore a boy scout outfit for the occasion.

Anderson Cooper's GLAAD award just gained quite a prestigious presenter. The organization has announced that Madonna will give the CNN host the Vito Russo Award at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards.
"By sharing his own experiences as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that Lgbt people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric," GLAAD president Herndon Graddick says in a statement. "He continues to raise the bar and set a new standard for journalists everywhere, and I'm proud to call him a friend."
Cooper and Madonna are friends in real life, which is reportedly why GLAAD felt she would be an appropriate presenter for his award. Cooper publicly came out in July 2012 after he allowed fellow journalist Andrew Sullivan to publish an email he sent in which he wrote, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be,...

What my followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ saw today: • I've found another upside to spending time with That's My Boy. I can now answer, quickly and unequivocally, when asked: "What's the worst movie you've ever seen?" (Which is usually the second question I get from people who've just learned I'm a film critic, after: "What's your favorite movie?") • Dammit, I am *really* doing something wrong... Andrew Sullivan’s Presales for Subscription Website Near Half a Million Dollars • Ah, the myopia of white male hetero filmmakers channeling their inner 12-year-old dork. They think what they do is "new" and "different"! To the critics: You always complain that Hollywood never gives you new stuff, and then when you get it, you flip out. Lighten up.P— Farrelly Brothers (@farrellybros) January 27, 2013 To the critics: Movie 43 is not the end of the world. It's just a $6-million movie where we tried to do something different.
