Carol Peletier, played by Melissa McBride, is arguably the most riveting character in The Walking Dead franchise.
Calculating and cold-hearted at times but comforting when she needs to be, Carol walks the line between hero and anti-hero, never once failing to bring pathos to her character.
Imagine the intrigue of fans when AMC Networks announced that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 will be subtitled "The Book of Carol."
Hmm. We've got to do something about that title.
What does "The Book of Carol" mean, anyway? Is it a biblical allusion like The Book of Enoch or The Book of Eli?
Or is "The Book of Carol" in reference to a book Carol is writing during her time away from the original Grimes clan, perhaps a book of poetry inspired by non-confrontational walkers?
Carol's presence on The Walking Dead, while mesmerizing, is not exactly a strong narrative pull, at least as a singular protagonist.

RoboCop became both a blockbuster and a controversial critical darling upon its release in 1987 due to a mix of jet black humor and as subtle as a jackhammer social commentary sticking a perfect landing. Its success was a surprise to an industry that had looked at Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner’s original script with its simplistic one-word comic book title and assumed it was fated to be a high-concept stinker.
The 2023 RoboDoc documentary miniseries does a terrific job of chronicling the effort it took to turn RoboCop into both a box office win and an enduring cult masterpiece with a quick and funny format that makes it accessible to modern fans. Madame Web was a huge disappointment for Marvel fans. It had an exceptional cast of actors, including Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, and Emma Roberts. On top of this, the film was an entire project centered in the world of Spider-People, and the last project to do something like this, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was extremely successful.
Despite this, the film was severely criticized in every aspect. So much so, that it became one of the worst-doing films in Marvel history, even having a budget of only $80 million.
Madame Web
While these unfortunate predispositions may lead to the film having no chance at having any future parts, fans have come up with the perfect plot for its sequel. Interestingly enough, it completely relies on the film’s deceased villain and a character from Tom Hardy’s Venom.

It has been almost eight years since Disney partially gained the rights to live-action Spider-Man media, and for better or worse, through the expansive world-building of the MCU, the character has been redefined for a new generation of audiences ever since. Whatever shortcomings the MCU counterpart of Spider-Man may have simply pale in comparison to the horrendous, downright pathetic track record of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which consists of movies of major and minor Spider-Man-related characters. As a fan of the webhead, if you consider that Morbius (2022) was the lowest this unwelcome franchise could drop to, Madame Web will prove you wrong.
Aside from the ludicrous plotline, cringe-worthy dialogue writing, horrible characterization, poor acting, and generic screenplay, Madame Web suffers from an absolute lack of effort by the makers, who seemingly can’t be bothered to even try to make people care about it. It cannot be overstated how bad...

The popularity and success of the Spider-Verse animated franchise have inspired Sony to introduce shared Spider-people-oriented world-building gimmicks in live-action movies as well, and Madame Web is the first step in that direction. As a part of Sony’s existing Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven, Madame Web will introduce the titular spider-themed clairvoyant as well as a host of female spider-characters, as the movie aims to become the franchise’s first female superhero ensemble.
However, despite the fact that these characters are prominent members of the Spider-Society, appearing across comics, animated series, and games for a couple of decades, they are relatively obscure to the general audience due to not having a presence in live-action movies yet. This can make enjoying a superhero team-up movie a bit of a challenging affair, and to get rudimentary knowledge about the characters in question,...

Good news, fellow arachnophobes! Yes, it's an unfortunate inevitability that any film related to "Spider-Man" is going to feature at least a little bit of spidery spookiness at some point in the story. The same remains true of "Madame Web," the newly-released standalone film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. But here's the biggest point in our favor: All those pesky, eight-legged arachnids are rendered in wholly unconvincing CGI, thus making this a far, far cry from Shelob in "The Return of the King" or that jump-scare early on in the first "Dune" movie. Yet even if they only exist in ones and zeroes, the nasty little critters are still chiefly responsible for, well, all the superpowered action taking place in the movie.
The opening scene immediately sets the stage for us, explaining how rare spiders in the Amazon jungle are apparently...

Directed by S.J. Clarkson (whose Marvel credentials include the Jessica Jones series), Madame Web is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, following Morbius and the two Venom movies. Essentially revamping a classic character from Amazing Spider-Man comics (where Madame Web has always been portrayed as an old woman), the film serves as a standalone adventure with significant connections to a certain wall-crawling web-spinner.
After a jungle-set prologue detailing the mysterious, spider-heavy circumstances of her birth in 1973, the film jumps forward 30 years to 2003 and centres on Cassie Web (Dakota Johnson), a single paramedic, whose platonic best friend is one Ben Parker (Adam Scott), who’s about to become -yes!- an uncle. S.J. Clarkson’s Madame Web is Sony’s latest attempt at maintaining rights to the Marvel characters they purchased decades ago. It’s a film so miscalculated, so reminiscent of the pre-mcu age of comic-book cinema, that it reminds audiences averse to the Marvel and DC cinematic universes of how much sloppier and stultifying the genre used to be.
The problems begin with the decision to adapt the character of Madame Web in the first place. In the comics, Cassandra Web is a blind, paralyzed old woman who spends her life hooked up to life support issuing precognitive predictions to Peter Parker and his allies. Even within the extended Spider-Man mini-universe, Cassandra is an afterthought, a fourth-string character at best. This film completely revamps Cassandra, turning her into Cassie (Dakota Johnson), a young paramedic who suddenly develops psychic abilities that draw her into a world with metahumans all linked by...

Warning: this article will contain spoilers for "Madame Web"
One might hesitate to refer to S.J. Clarkson's new film "Madame Web" as a superhero movie. There is very little in the way of costumed vigilantism, and the only time the four central Spider-Women are seen in full superheroine regalia, making any use of their superpowers, they are merely glimpsed in flash-forwards. Indeed, audiences are never told how three of the four Spider-Women even get their powers; we're merely assured that they will be superheroes someday. It's a pre-origin-story origin story.
The only other spandex-clad fighter we meet is Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), the film's villain. Just like in Peter Parker's and Miles Morales' origin stories, Ezekiel also gained superpowers from a specialized spider bite back in 1973, giving him wall-crawling abilities, super strength, and a powerful Spider-Sense. In "Madame Web," Ezekiel's Spider-Sense isn't just a tingle to warn him of danger.

Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) in Columbia Pictures’ ‘Madame Web’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a weird place right now. Since the end of Phase 3 and “The Infinity Saga,” the movies seem to be just throwing stuff against a wall to see what sticks. Unfortunately, Madame Web doesn’t quite stick.
Madame Web is about a New York City paramedic named Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) who, after a near-death experience, discovers that she has clairvoyant powers. Meanwhile, a dark figure named Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim), who also has clairvoyancy (as well as other spider-like powers), has dreams of three young women named Julia (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya (Isabela Merced) who will develop similar powers to his and eventually kill him. Cassandra’s abilities allow her to detect Ezekiel’s plan and she vows to stop him. But to save their future, she must confront her own past.

The Spider-Man universe has a cadre of supporting characters in its vault. Cassandra “Madame” Web is one such character who first appeared in the Amazing Spider-Man issue #210 in the fall of 1980. Created by Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Cassandra is an elderly, disabled woman with precognitive abilities who helps Peter Parker find a kidnapping victim.
Transitioning from the comic book origins of Cassandra who is introduced as a character of depth and mystery, the film adaptation directed by S.J. Clarkson, and written by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker, squanders any possibility for expansion of the Madame Web world through clinical and formulaic storytelling.

When I was a kid, my mom steered us toward toys that looked like G.I. Joe or Transformers action figures, but weren’t. Their faces were wack, the joints all wrong, such that the limbs didn’t move right, or else they popped out altogether. Sure, these off-brand imitations cost less than the real thing — that made a difference on my meager allowance — but no amount of imagination could turn my busted GoBots into Optimus Prime.
Now, if 10-year-old me could’ve predicted the future (the way Cassie Webb can), he would’ve seen this disappointment as valuable practice for a movie like “Madame Web,” a hollow Sony-made Spider-Man spinoff with none of the charm you expect from even the most basic superhero movie. The title mutant — who’s never actually identified by that name — hails from the margins of the Marvel multiverse, which suggests that, much as Sony did with “Morbius” and “Venom,...

There’s something so demoralizing about lambasting another underwhelming Marvel offering. What is there left to really say about the disappointments and ocean-floor-level expectations created by the mining of this intellectual property? Every year, studio executives dig up minor characters, dress them in a fog of hype and leave moviegoers to debate, defend or discard the finished product.
Madame Web is one of these recently exhumed efforts. The film, directed by Sj Clarkson and starring Dakota Johnson as a clairvoyant paramedic in New York, has as much energy as an employee subjected to an ice breaker during a corporate retreat. It is an airless and stilted endeavor driven by a mechanical screenplay (written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker & Clarkson). Its lack of imagination would be astounding if it wasn’t so expected. When Sony dropped the trailer two months ago, the early reactions were nothing short of brutal.

Word on the street is that S.J. Clarkson’s openly abysmal “Madame Web” took place in the 1990s until the whole film was time-shifted forward to the start of the 21st century during reshoots, and while that rumor might sound like a satire of the creative bankruptcy that led superhero movies to go from “No Way Home” to “No One Cares” in less than two years, actually watching Clarkson’s lifeless cobweb of an origin story left me with a lot more questions than answers.
On the one hand, the assortment of Clinton-era classics on the soundtrack definitely feel like orphaned cues from an earlier cut. On the other hand, a building-sized ad for Beyoncé’s 2003 album is flagrantly Photoshopped into the background of a shot that serves no other purpose, and Dakota Johnson has a line of Adr about how she’s “gotta get home in time for ‘Idol,...

We’re just about two weeks away from the release of ‘Madame Web.’ Despite the limited interest in the character, Sony has chosen to expand its Spider-Man Universe by introducing another side character related to Spider-Man.
The movie centers around Cassie as she grapples with newfound powers and faces off against the enigmatic antagonist, Ezekiel Sims, played by Tahar Rahim. Ezekiel is determined to prevent three young women—Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced)—from acquiring spider-related abilities, a storyline familiar to Spider-Man enthusiasts from the comics. Cassie must unite with this trio to safeguard them from Ezekiel’s pursuit.

Despite its intriguing premise, there are limited reasons to anticipate success for this movie, especially given the recent cinematic failures of more popular characters with established fan bases over the past year.

There are roughly 2 weeks standing between us and the upcoming release of ‘Madame Web.’ Despite the non-existent interest in the character, Sony decided to expand its Spider-Man Universe with yet another side character that is not Spider-Man.
The film follows Cassie as she grapples with newly acquired powers and confronts a mysterious foe, Ezekiel Sims, portrayed by Tahar Rahim. Ezekiel is on a mission to prevent three young women, Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), from developing spider-related abilities.
