If the acquisitions frenzy and precedent-setting deals struck in Berlin and Cannes is going to continue, it will surprise many of the sellers who’ve come to the Toronto Film Festival to fill slots in their 2015 slates. Maybe it’s because there were so many spectacular deals this year, of perhaps it’s because Toronto 2014 is so stocked with studio films that star the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Bill Murray and Denzel Washington. Whatever the reason, acquisition titles seem to be lower key than last year, when Can A Song Save Your Life and Bad Words prompted overnight auctions and $7 million deals, and just about every movie that played here found distribution.
The deal action got underway yesterday and today with Relativity’s acquisition of The Woman In Black 2 and Saban Entertainment’s deal for fest title Tracers. All the ingredients for a continued buying surge seem to be there,...

The calls have been heard loud and clear, both on stage and off at the Oscars or in the annals of the web and at the box office: the world demands more movies with women, about women, by women and for women.
Every week a movie seems to be failing the Bechdel test, and every week a separate movie ends up walking away with the lion’s share at the box office. From hits like Maleficent, The Fault in Our Stars and Lucy to monster franchises like The Hunger Games, the old notion that teenage boys are the ones driving the demand at the movies is rapidly eroding. The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy opened to a 44 percent female audience on the film’s opening weekend, the highest share for any Marvel movie to date.
And although they’ve taken their sweet time, Hollywood...

Michael Jackson lives on!Justin Timberlake stars alongside the King of Pop in the music video for their duet, "Love Never Felt So Good," and Ellen DeGeneres is giving fans an exclusive first look of the clip. In the music video, the "Mirrors" crooner and a group of back-up dancers moonwalk their way across several backdrops plucked from iconic Jackson videos, including "Thriller," "Bad" and "Billie Jean." Written by Jackson and Paul Anka back in 1983, the song is the debut single for "Xscape,"which was released May 13.The track was refreshed and re-worked by Epic Records Chairman L.A. Reid. In addition, the album features production by Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, Stargate, Jerome "Jroc" Harmon and John McClain on songs recorded by Jackson between 1983 and 1999. We think this is a great homage to the late superstar! What do you of the music video? Sound off below. Read more...

There hasn't been a ton of fanfare about the new Michael Jackson album, Xscape, but here it is — streaming on Spotify in full. What's immediately comforting about the entire project (a collection of old recordings cut and spliced and updated by producers like Timbaland, StarGate, John McClain, and Rodney Jerkins) is that it all genuinely sounds like Michael Jackson. Fans of the late singer will have no trouble recognizing what they loved about Mj in the first place. "Love Never Felt So Good," the album's first single, is immediately Song of Summer–worthy. There's even a surprisingly fun "A Horse With No Name" rework called "A Place With No Name." And it wouldn't be kind-of-creepy Michael Jackson without a song called "Do You Know Where Your Children Are."...

Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain literally ate his words after losing a bet over the NFL draft. McClain was so sure the Houston Texans were going to pick a quarterback in the first round, he was willing to eat his paper's front page if it didn't happen. The Texans then selected Jadaveon Clowney, a defensive end, and McClain had no choice but to fulfill his side of the bet. Unlike the old Michael Jackson song that quite a bit of the internet (including this very site!) mistook for a new Michael Jackson song, "Love Never Felt So Good" is indeed a truly new Mj track. It premiered on last night's iHeartRadio Music Awards and was written with Paul Anka in 1983, and further "contemporized" for its 2014 release. It's also the first single off Jackson's posthumous Xscape album, and features production work from Timbaland Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon, and Jackson estate co-executor John McClain. The disco-tinged Pharrell sound we're all so fond of hearing right now? Well, Mj did it best.

Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua are together again. The Training Day star and director are getting ready to unleash their film adaptation on the 1980s TV show, The Equalizer, on the world. Columbia Pictures has high hopes for the movie, with the goal of it launching a Taken-style series for Washington- but with better production value. The 59 year old Oscar winner seems game to dive into the action genre, and The Equalizer could signal a new route for his career to explore.
According to Fuqua, we're all going to be surprised at Washington's physical prowess. "His hand-to-hand work is pretty nasty when the monster comes out," says the director. "We used what was around him. You'd be surprised what he can do with a corkscrew. You'll never open a bottle of wine the same way again." He also expresses delight in the veteran actor's intensity in the role of Robert McCall.

The Expendables and The Expendables 2 both did upwards of $75 million at the domestic box office. A third film is reportedly in the works for a 2014 release. Action fans loved seeing their favorite silver screen icons together in a single film; if one action star is good, more than one is better, right? By similar logic, if one onscreen psychopath is good, then more than one is great, right? Well, we think so. We would welcome an Expendables-style horror film with all of our favorite people reprising their roles for a giant killing spree. The reason The Expendables was feasible is that the characters were original. It wasn’t John McClain and Cobra and the T800; trying to bring all of those characters together in one film would be a licensing nightmare, and the logistics are questionable at best. The time it took New Line Cinema to bring Freddy and...

In the Hollywood handbook of character shorthand, a British actor is pretty high up on the list of ways to swiftly establish somebody as a bad'un. As villain clichés go, it's just above 'underground lair' and slightly below 'unexpectedly offing a loyal henchman'.
Ben Kingsley's doing his bit to keep the stereotype alive this month, playing the formidable Mandarin who makes it his mission to destroy Tony Stark's world in Iron Man 3.
Plus, just in case you've been living under a rock or in a coma, Benedict Cumberbatch plays much-discussed villain John Harrison in next month's Star Trek Into Darkness, and he's dominated Paramount's entire marketing campaign so completely that the character already feels weirdly iconic.
So with Brit baddies more in vogue than ever, Digital Spy takes a look back over six of the best...
