Attica and Tembi Locke are re-teaming for another TV series.
The siblings, who already adapted Tembi’s memoir as the Netflix series From Scratch, have signed an overall deal with Universal Television and set up their first project under the pact: an adaptation of Attica’s novel Bluebird, Bluebird.
The drama, which does not yet have a network/platform attached, revolves around Darren Mathews, a Black Texas Ranger who is deeply ambivalent about growing up Black in the lone star state and was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could — until duty called him home.
The Lockes will co-write and exec produce the series alongside Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson and Will Rowbotham for 3 Arts Entertainment.
“From our first meeting with Universal Television, we felt instant creative alignment,” said Attica and Tembi Locke. “As authors, we understand storytelling across different formats and platforms.

Spoilers for "The Equalizer 3" follow.
Antoine Fuqua's new film "The Equalizer 3" takes place in a placid, seaside Italian village where the vicious vigilante Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) has come to rest. Well, more specifically, McCall is there to recover from a bullet wound after having infiltrated a gangster's Italian lair and murdered him and about a hundred of his thugs. While he recovers, McCall finds that he likes the town's quaint storefronts and friendly locals, eventually realizing that he'd like to retire to this place as soon as possible. Before that can happen, though, he first has to murder several hundred more mafiosi who aim to bully the hamlet's shopowners from their buildings, tear the town down, and build garish casinos in its place.

While it’s certainly nice to get a change of scenery from the Boston travelogue of the first two films in the Equalizer series, Italy, at least on paper, might seem like an odd, random choice of locale for Antoine Fuqua to wrap up the trilogy. But not long after The Equalizer 3 opens on an Italian man and his son cruising toward a Sicilian vineyard, it all starts to make sense: The fertile soil and pathways to the main villa are strewn with mutilated bodies, all the way down into a basement where the shadowy figure of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) looks upon the aforementioned man with a casually predatory indifference.
Those opening minutes justify the trek to Italy more than any of the delicious-looking cappuccinos that McCall downs later in the film. Despite always being on the side of swift justice for the little guys of the world,...

Nobody can threaten someone quietly better than Denzel Washington.
Oh, our man can pump up the volume when he needs to, in terms of letting people know he’s bringing the pain — our ears are still ringing from his “King Kong ain’t got shit on me!” taunt from Training Day. But when he lowers his voice to a basso profundo rumble and he fixes that dead-eyed stare on someone, the one that suggests the unflappable, untouchable Teflon Denzel has officially entered the building, and issues some sort of oh-you’ve-stepped-in-it-now promise of bodily harm?...

Returning for the third installment in the gritty action saga, The Equalizer 3 aims to deepen the mysterious world of Robert McCall. With Denzel Washington’s undeniable charm at its helm and Antione Fuqua’s seasoned direction, the film promises a continuation of its intense street-justice narrative. Yet, does it deliver the high-octane thrills we’ve come to expect, or does it falter under the weight of its own legacy? In addition to Washington, the film also stars Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, Andrea Scarduzio, and Remo Girone. Richard Wenk returns as screenwriter.
The film starts with one of the bloodiest intro scenes, beginning with Robert McCall (Washington) captured by thugs. They don’t stand a chance, though, as McCall delivers his famed countdown smackdown, and just like that, the bad guys are rendered useless. After the encounter, he ends up in the small Italian town of Altomonte to recover. He stays with the local doctor,...

Just who is the Equalizer? Despite a hit TV show in the 1980s and another with Queen Latifah still running, that title has become synonymous with Denzel Washington, who returns as government-assassin-turned-vigilante Robert McCall. Billed as the final chapter in a trilogy, “The Equalizer 3” sees McCall finding community in a picturesque part of Italy and being forced to protect its people from the mafia. The film also reteams Washington with director Antoine Fuqua for the fifth time, and their comfort with one another ensures a seamless action movie that might not attract new fans, but should play well to those already fond of this franchise.
Fuqua throws the audience directly into the action. The camera follows a man as he walks through an Italian vineyard strewn with bodies, knives and bullet wounds jutting out of them. McCall must be close by, a point reinforced by Marcelo Zarvos’ quietly alarming score.

To enjoy the (allegedly) final entry in Antoine Fuqua’s “The Equalizer” trilogy, it’s not at all crucial to understand the particulars of how former Marine and intelligence operative Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) lands in Italy for this latest outing. It’s safe to assume the vigilante is there to kick some bad-dude butt, with more convoluted revelations to come. Wherever Robert McCall lands, even a luxurious private winery, there are villains afoot for him to kill off in the most gruesome manners, details be damned.
And “The Equalizer 3” opens with Robert skulking around said winery, offing dark-clad mercenary types, and apparently setting right some sort of horrible injustice. As we might expect, he gets much more than he bargained for — and so will fans of Fuqua’s brutal action series, which closes out in fine style.

In between doling out Oscar-worthy performances and making Shakespearean monologues feel like something you haven't heard a thousand times before, Denzel Washington has spent the past two decades cracking skulls and taking names, going back to at least "Man on Fire." In fact, he's been doing it so long, his co-star in Tony Scott's sublime 2004 action-thriller, Dakota Fanning, had the chance to go off and grow up into a fully-fledged adult actor. That noise you just heard was the sound of millions of Millennials popping the vertebrae in their backs as they abruptly jerked upright, crying out in terror.

“Deep, deep down, I knew it was going to be an uphill experience, and I was ready. I was all for it, and it ended up being much harder than I was expecting, but we showed up every day,” admits Zoe Saldana about starring in and co-producing the hit Netflix limited series “From Scratch.” For our recent webchat she adds, “the cast, the LA crew, the Italian crew; we showed up every day, and we gave it 120%. It didn’t matter if it was 16 hour days or 10 hour days. We were in it because we had all been moved by [writer and co-creator] Tembi’s story. But also we all had our personal share of grief, and we were there for ourselves as well, and Tembi gave us that space. Note: The following contains spoilers for “From Scratch.”
Showrunner and co-creator Attica Locke repeatedly persuaded her sister Tembi to write down her one-of-a-kind love story in memoir form, which eventually became the New York Times bestselling book “From Scratch,” and now that memoir is a tremendously popular Netflix series.
Both sisters sat down with TheWrap for an interview about adapting Tembi’s memoir into the new Netflix limited series, revealing how they took Tembi’s story from page to screen.
“When I was writing a proposal for my book, and I put all of the themes that were in there, and I’m a first time writer, had never written a book, and literally it’s food, death, love, travel, racism, adoption,” Tembi said. “When the book went out on proposal, some of the early feedback I got was ’Well, she can’t do this. As much as I work to be as objective as possible when writing TV criticism, it would be a lie to say that my mood doesn’t affect the way I feel about whatever I’m watching. When I turned on “From Scratch,” a long week had left me feeling more delicate than usual, and all too ready to slip into a warm bath of a show. Netflix’s unabashedly sentimental new limited series is just that — at least at first. What begins as a swoony romance in its first episodes becomes a heartrending story of loss and resilience by its last. Frankly, I never stood a chance.
Based on Tembi Locke’s memoir, and produced by Hello Sunshine after Reese Witherspoon picked it for her wide-reaching book club, “From Scratch” follows the beginning, middle, and end of the relationship between Texan artist Amy (Zoe Saldaña) and Italian chef Lino...

As a portrait of a late love, From Scratch is about as fond as they come. Sincere adoration radiates from every scene, enveloping its central couple and their loved ones even in moments of strife or struggle. The Netflix miniseries comes across as the work of someone savoring their dearest memories, which it essentially is — it’s based on the memoir by Tembi Locke, who also created the series with her sister Attica Locke.
If it’s an understandable impulse to want to cast a late love in the rosiest glow possible, though, it leaves From Scratch somewhat less clear-eyed, less complex and ironically less intimate than it could be. The results are still inviting enough, at least if you have a taste for sentimental romance. But to put it in terms its chef male lead, Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), might understand, it could...

When executive producer and Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon was tasked with casting a performer to play Amy Wheeler in “From Scratch,” Netflix’s limited series adaptation of Tembi Locke’s memoir, she looked no further than her dinner table.
Witherspoon was dining across from Zoe Saldaña, who was accompanied by her Italian husband and exchanging bits of dialogue in his native tongue, when she realized the “Avatar” star would be the perfect actor to play Amy.
The show is an epic love story about Amy’s whirlwind romance with a hunky Sicilian chef named Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), who she meets while studying abroad in Italy. When Lino is diagnosed with cancer, the couple must reconcile with family and navigate their love in the face of imminent loss.

The new Netflix limited series “From Scratch,” starring Zoe Saldaña and Eugenio Mastrandrea, debuted its first trailer Thursday.
Inspired by the New York Times bestselling memoir “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home” by Tembi Locke, the adaptation’s eight hour-long episodes will premiere on the streamer Oct. 21.
“In Italy we have a saying,” Mastrandrea’s voice glides over the opening sequence of Zoe Saldaña’s character studying abroad in Italy. “In dreams, as in love, all is possible.”
“From Scratch” centers on Amahle ‘Amy’ Wheeler (Saldaña) as she leaves her Texas hometown for college, and then the United States entirely for a semester studying abroad in Italy. Though she is planning to go to law school after undergrad, those plans change when she literally bumps into the handsome Sicilian chef, Lino (Mastrandrea).

We haven’t cried so hard since the This Is Us finale! Inspired by Eureka actress Tembi Locke’s bestselling memoir of her multicultural romance with her late husband, Saro, Netflix’s From Scratch packs years of love and struggle, family drama and reconciliation, grief and healing into eight moving episodes. The limited series, which she executive produces alongside her sister, Attica Locke (Little Fires Everywhere), begins in 2000, when Black Texan Amahle “Amy” Wheeler (Zoe Saldaña) meets Sicilian chef Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea) while studying art abroad in Florence. “The first time Lino cooks for Amy, you can’t touch that — that is sacrosanct,” Tembi says of the blissful montage recreating her meal (a taste of everything on Saro’s menu) in the premiere. Aaron Epstein/Netflix Lino, who’s estranged from his disapproving, traditional father and therefore the rest of his family, joins Amy in America, where bonding with her dysfunctional clan proves difficult.
