Despite its global box office dominance, “Top Gun: Maverick” never had a wide release in China due to its unreserved celebration of American military might. Ironically, that propagandistic streak is what would have probably made the Tom Cruise blockbuster a hit with Chinese audiences; it has many of the same elements that have defined the country's recent string of slick actioners designed first and foremost to stir up nationalism. So, it was no surprise when China's own answer to the jet pilot phenomenon, “Born to Fly”, wrapped production last May, the same month that “Top Gun” hit cineplexes. More unexpected was the announcement later in the year that the release had been postponed, with speculation being that the studio was worried about negative comparisons to its American equivalent. Now, more than half a year later, the finished product has finally been unveiled. Early box office numbers have been great, but...

After quietly breaking out of Cannes back in 2019 with Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains – a Critics’ Week closing film, Chinese filmmaker Gu Xiaogang is wrapping up production on Dwelling By West Lake – the second film in his proposed trilogy. The production looks to have begun in March (press conference pic) of this year and then there was a pause (perhaps due to this being a seasonal or temporal element) and it was picked up again in September. Lei Wu and Qinqin Jiang are toplining. Shuli Huang is the cinematographer on the project – he directed two shorts that were recently part of the Critics’ Week section supported by programming teams of Charles Tesson and then, Ava Cahen.…...

Beijing, Aug 30 (Ians) Espanyol winger Matias Vargas has completed his move to Shanghai Port, the Chinese Super League (Csl) club announced on Tuesday.
“Argentinian player Matias Vargas has joined Shanghai Port Fc,” the Shanghai club said in a brief statement.
“It is believed that the arrival of Vargas will further help increase Shanghai Port’s firing power up front,” the statement added.
The 25-year-old striker is the third signing Shanghai Port made in August after they signed his former Espanyol teammate, Chinese international Wu Lei and Jiang Guangtai.
Vargas joined Espanyol in 2019 before being loaned to Turkish club Adana Dermispor in 2021, where he netted five goals last season.
Shanghai Port, who won the Csl title in 2018 and have since been a title contender, have fallen short of expectations so far this season, collecting 24 points from 14 games to sit sixth in the Csl table, 19 points behind league leaders Wuhan Three Towns.

Madrid, Aug 11 (Ians) Spanish La Liga club Espanyol confirmed on Thursday that Chinese international striker Wu Lei is leaving the club to return to his homeland.
The 30-year-old is returning to Shanghai Port, where he played before coming to Spain, scoring 151 league goals in 296 appearances.
Wu arrived in Spain in January 2019 and scored 16 goals in 126 appearances for Espanyol, becoming the first ever Chinese player to score in La Liga in the process.
Although he was popular with fans of the Barcelona-based club, Wu found himself increasingly on the fringes of the team in the last two seasons, playing just 457 minutes of league football last season and 835 the year before, as the club played in Spain’s second division, reports Xinhua.
The arrival of striker Joselu from Alaves in the summer further reduced Wu’s chances of playing this season, and he did not participate in the club’s pre-season training...

It is a time of turmoil for “a great walled city” (any resemblance to China is completely not coincidental) in some undefined long-ago era. Three clans fight for control of the territory; two team up to defeat the third. Then a warrior for one of these last dynasties standing, the Yan, severely wounds the Commander (Deng Chao) of their rivals, the Pei. They now own the city. The Pei military higher-ups want war. Their king (Ryan Zheng), who is definitely paranoid and may or may not also be batshit crazy,...

Starting in just a few weeks, Hollywood will attempt to continually up the ante each summer weekend to deliver popcorn-munching thrills. "A duel between our chief commanders... means war." Well Go USA has debuted a brand new, official Us trailer for Zhang Yimou's latest film, a historical fantasy drama titled Shadow - originally Ying in Chinese. This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last fall, and also stopped by Fantastic Fest, Busan, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. The film is a re-imagining of the classic Three Kingdoms story from Chinese history, and is another martial arts epic. The story is about a king and the people's struggle for their rightful land, as told through the perspectives of the king, his sister, his commander, the entrapped women of the palace, and a commoner. It's filmed in a unique "Chinese watercolor" style with a muted style resembling a B&W look (though it does have some color). The cast includes Ryan Zheng, Chao Deng, Qianyuan Wang, Jun Hu, Xiaotong Guan,...

I've got a fantastic first trailer here for you to watch for a new supernatural martial arts thriller called Shadow. The film comes from director Zhang Yimou who has previously brought us films such as Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, Matt Damon's The Great Wall and the Christian Bale's The Flowers of War. He's going back to his roots with this new film and it looks like it could be stunning!
I absolutely love what I'm seeing in this first trailer. It looks like it was beautifully shot and there's sure to be some incredibly cool fight choreography. On top of that, the story looks intriguing!
The film is set during China's Three Kingdom's era (Ad 220–280) and it tells the story of a king and his people’s struggle for their rightful land. That story is told through the perspectives of the king,...

While Zhang Yimou has recently collaborated with Hollywood stars in the Matt Damon-led The Great Wall and the Christian Bale-led The Flowers of War, he’s returning to his roots with his next feature, the period martial arts epic Shadow. Ahead of a release in China later this year, the first trailer has now arrived.
As suggested within the nature of the title, Shadow is a mystic thriller that takes place during medieval China and tells the story of a king and his people’s struggle for their rightful land – all told through the perspectives of the king, his sister, his commander, the entrapped women of the palace, and a commoner. This ensemble will feature Ryan Zheng, Xiaotong Guan, Chao Deng, Li Sun, Qianyuan Wang, Jun Hu, Lei Wu, and Jingchun Wang.

I’m just Kidding! I know we all know who Orlando Bloom is but I can assure you we have not seen him like this before.
An ultra badass..!
That’s right Orlando Bloom has completely reinvented himself as a punchy, kicky, ready for business, bonafide action star! Sure we have seen him firing arrows or swinging swords but The Shanghai Job sees him swinging fists and sweeping legs in director Charles Martin’s (Skins, Marcella) debut feature, set in the stunning locales of Shanghai.

It may not have made much of a splash here, but Zhang Yimou‘s The Great Wall has made nearly $330 million worldwide, and now he’s already started shooting his next project. Variety reports the director has begun production on Shadow, a historical epic that takes place in the Three Kingdoms era around mid-200s Ad. Unfortunately, no details are revealed beyond that, but the cast includes Deng Chao, Zheng Kai, Wang Qianyuan, Hu Jun, Guan Xiaotong, Wu Lei and Wang Jingchun. With production underway, hopefully we’ll see it by next year.
In other news, Chris Evans has found the rare non-Captain America role. Deadline reports he’ll be leading Red Sea Diving Resort, a new drama from longtime Homeland writer-producer Gideon Raff.
