BBC's stylized retelling of the life of Ian Fleming came to a close tonight when "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond" aired its final episode. The four-part mini-series chronicled everything from Fleming's work with the Royal Navy to his troubles relationship with his mother.
This work was adapted off biographies about Fleming's life, and BBC America clearly presented how reported aspects of the author's history inspired his James Bond novels. In fact, in many ways Fleming was Bond in the flesh, even down to his real-life Bond girl, Ann O'Neill.
"Fleming" felt in many ways like the Bond project that will help tide fans over for the next official film, currently referred to as "Bond 24." That movie has a tentative Nov. 6, 2015 release date in the United States.
Though this was a historical project, Dominic Cooper and Lara Pulver easily felt like they could have filled the roles...

Dominic Cooper and Lara Pulver talk Sky Atlantic's Fleming in a new Digital Spy video interview.
Cooper plays James Bond's creator Ian Fleming in the four-part biopic, with Pulver cast as his future wife Ann O'Neill.
In the DS video, the pair talk the complex relationship that Fleming had with his most famous creation.
"Bond achieved all Ian's failings," Cooper says. "His vivid, wonderful imagination led him to create this person who he was really desperate to be."
Fleming is also described by its stars as a glamorised account of Fleming's early life, rather than a "detailed biographical account".
"It's a version of what he thought his life should have been," explains Cooper.
Fleming begins tonight at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.

Review Rob Smedley 12 Feb 2014 - 22:00
Sky's glossy four-part Ian Fleming biopic is a sexy affair. Here's Rob's review of episode one...
This review contains spoilers.
Ian Fleming was good at sex. Writing it, that is. And not just in the way James Bond bedded women with the frequency of a man allergic to standing up. Fleming made sure everything in 007's literary adventures was writ sexy: destinations, clothes, food, drink, cars, planes, even décor... everything in Bond's life was veneered with the seductive, the alluring. It still is. Well, you only live twice, why not make it fun?
It was an especially potent cocktail when he first introduced Bond's 'shagnanigans' to the grey British public in 1953. It was the post-war era of austerity, when rationing was still in place and most people hadn't ventured further than Clacton-on-Sea, and even then that was only for some thoroughly workmanlike, 'best undergarments,...

If you know the name James Bond, you likely know the name Ian Fleming, too.
All the "official" movies about licensed-to-kill Agent 007 note his creator, the novelist whose experiences as a World War II naval intelligence officer informed the spy's adventures. His story has been told before - as in the 1990 TV movie "Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming," which starred Bond portrayer Sean Connery's son Jason - but it's revisited in the four-part BBC America miniseries "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond," which starts a weekly run Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Dominic Cooper ("Captain America: The First Avenger," "Mamma Mia!") plays Fleming as an adventurous, romantic pseudo-Bond. "It's really hard to go back and remember what you knew and what you learned doing the job," Cooper tells Zap2it. "I knew that kind of iconic image of him smoking a cigarette, and what he had done and achieved.

On screen, she's seduced Sherlock Holmes, served as a Renaissance patron of Leonardo Da Vinci, and played fairy godmother to Sookie Stackhouse, but on Wednesday night, Lara Pulver takes on a new role as Ann O'Neill in BBC America's "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond."
In the dramatized story behind the story, Dominic Cooper is a young Ian Fleming, who goes from party boy to spy to war hero and James Bond author, all the while romancing the married Ann O'Neill. Their relationship is a troubled one -- an adulterous cat and mouse game, which is at times ...

BBC America will explore the life of author Ian Fleming in its miniseries "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond" -- and it won't necessarily be the most flattering portrait.
The four-hour biopic traces Fleming's (Dominic Cooper) time as an intelligence officer for the British navy, his frustrations with his first career and the way he channeled them into creating his most famous character, James Bond.
"What's fascinating is particularly in going back and looking at the novels again -- the Bond films didn't really emulate this at first, and they're coming round to it now -- but it's a very dark, depressing, quite twisted character in 'Casino Royale,' for example," director Mat Whitecross says Saturday (Jan. 11) at the TCA winter press tour. "Going back and looking at these scripts [for the miniseries], you get moments of Fleming's life which are like Bond's, and then he doesn't come up to scratch,...

Lara Pulver has revealed details about her role in the upcoming Sky Atlantic drama Fleming, which tells the story of the James Bond creator.
Sherlock star Pulver will play Ann O'Neill in the four-parter, a "captivating baroness" who had a passionate romance with spy and Bond writer Ian Fleming (Dominic Cooper).
"I feel like right now I'm playing the ultimate Bond girl: becoming Ann Fleming on screen. It's been a lot of fun," said Pulver.
"It's a beautiful piece of storytelling about the life of this man who we know a little bit of, but don't really know his backstory. It's hugely interesting. It's a historical drama in a sense and a love story at its heart."
Speaking about the relationship between Ann and Ian, Pulver added: "It's completely dysfunctional. She's known as Good-Time Annie and her spirit, her life and her passion for life are hugely admired. Her family's motto is,...

Howard Stark... no, wait, Dominic Cooper stars as the creator of James Bond in new Sky miniseries: Fleming...
Such is the proverbial bus-like nature of biopics, you wait ages for one, then two come along at once. The stories of Alfred Hitchcock, Grace Kelly, Jeff Buckley, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and more have all been doubled up by competing film and TV projects in recent months, and now Bond creator Ian Fleming's is joining the list.
A feature film version of Fleming's life, attached to director Duncan Jones, is in early development, alongside a miniseries from Sky.
Sky Atlantic is winning the race, with this glossy four-parter about the eventful life of the author, journalist, and British Naval Intelligence officer. Dominic Cooper plays the lead role, opposite Sherlock and Da Vinci's Demons' Lara Pulver as Ann O'Neill.

K5 Films, PalmStar Media Capital, Liberty Films and the estate of 'James Bond' author Ian Fleming, continue developing a feature based on the 1996 biography "Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond", with Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son) attached to direct :
"...sportsman, womanizer, naval commander, world-traveler, and spy, the creator of the Cold War's archetypal secret agent was infinitely more complex and interesting than his iconic fictional character, 'Agent 007'.
"Fleming's wide-ranging and exciting life inevitably provided the plausible backdrop for his 'Bond' novels.
"Highly regarded in British naval intelligence for his international contacts, he master-minded numerous top secret operations, including 'Golden Eye', uncovered here for the first time.
"He was also fundamental in shaping the prototype CIA. Two months before his wedding to Ann O'Neill, the widow of a friend with whom he'd carried on a passionate affair for fifteen years, Fleming sat down to write his first book,...

Lara Pulver has joined the cast of Sky Atlantic's forthcoming Ian Fleming biopic. The drama - which has the working title Fleming - will see Dominic Cooper play the James Bond creator and former naval intelligence officer. Pulver (Sherlock, Spooks) will play Ann O'Neill, an elegant Baroness whose wartime meeting with Fleming alters the course of the rest of their lives. "I am thrilled to be playing Ann, a real life high society siren worthy of Fleming's finest fictional femme fatales," said Pulver. "In extraordinary times Ann had the ear of politicians as powerful as Churchill and counted artists like Lucian Freud among her friends, yet was consumed by a torrid romance with the great Ian Fleming; a twisted and passionate love that would last the rest of their lives." Also cast in Fleming is Annabelle Wallis (more)...
