Exclusive: After signing rising filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček, CAA has helped him win a coveted assignment, as the co-writer and director of a new spin-off of the Evil Dead franchise for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.
Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps. The Evil Dead is of course the horror comedy franchise created by Raimi, going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation of Starz TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead and a number of other projects over the years. The most recent, standalone film Evil Dead Rise from writer-director Lee Cronin, grossed more than $147M worldwide last year when it hit theaters via Warner Bros, after world premiering at SXSW.

Justine Triet, the French director whose Palme d’Or winning film “Anatomy of Fall” is nominated for five Oscars, has signed with CAA.
Triet is the only woman nominated for a directing Oscar this year. Since “Anatomy of a Fall” world premiered at Cannes, it went on to have a thriving run in the North American fall festival circuit, including at Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festival, where it played to packed houses and earned stellar reviews. The movie just won a pair of Golden Globes for best foreign-language film and best screenplay (for Triet and Arthur Harari). “Anatomy of a Fall” is now vying for seven BAFTAs and five Oscars, including best film, director, actress (for Sandra Hüller), original screenplay and editing. It’s also nominated for 11 Cesar Awards in France.

Speakers included Chris Albrecht, the founder of Rubicon Global Media and former president of Legendary Television.
The challenges of financing series at a time of rising production costs and reduced spending by streamers and broadcasters was one of the major talking points at this week’s inaugural South International Series Festival in Cadiz, which ran from October 6-12.
Panellists at the festival’s industry programme debated how to finance series when the market is contracting. Speakers agreed fewer projects will be greenlit in the near future, as many as 25% fewer according to one exec, as streamers and broadcasters retrenched and dealt with higher production costs.

Entertainment industry heavyweights from France are sharing thoughts on their successes, the challenges they faced in a year overshadowed by Covid, as well as predicting what’s in store for the movie business in 2022.
Some of the country’s milestones in 2021 include the implementation of the E.U.’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms) to get global streamers like Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV Plus to start investing 20% of their annual revenues in French content, which broadcasting authorities (CSA) expect to be from €250 million ($282 million) to €300 million ($330 million) on average annually.
The country’s strict windowing rules are also getting a significant revamp which will allow streamers to have an earlier access — possibly 15 months — to newly released movies, compared with the current 36 months. While the indie film biz and the box office have been weakened by the pandemic, the French industry managed to get local pay TV group Canal Plus...

While France has a deeply entrenched cinema tradition, drama series have been gaining tremendous ground within the country’s cultural landscape within the past few years, with some of the country’s biggest producers, stars and filmmakers venturing into ambitious television projects. The 3-month-old merger of UniFrance and TV France Intl., the country’s film and audiovisual promotion organizations, into a single entity is probably the best illustration of this blended world.
The growing presence of global streaming services, especially Netflix, in the TV space has played a key role in bolstering a talent drain, catapulting French stars, such as Omar Sy with the Gaumont-produced show “Lupin,” to international recognition. Although Sy broke through a decade ago with the smash hit French comedy “Intouchables,” “Lupin” allowed him to reach many more viewers around the world. Another example is Tahar Rahim, who became known around the world after starring in...
