Every studio wants its own massive cinematic universe. Though many have tried (never forget the Dark Universe), none have managed to be nearly as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony's equivalent, the universe formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or Spumc), is now four movies deep (with at least two more coming this year). All the movies so far have revolved around supporting characters in the "Spider-Man" comics, mostly villains, but that's about to change this weekend.
The latest entry in Sony's Marvel universe is "Madame Web," the first movie that doesn't center on a villain, but instead, focuses on a hero and ally of Spider-Man. A sign of the downfall of civilization, or just the latest proof of superhero fatigue, "Madame Web" follows Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers she has the spider-like ability to see the future. She takes it upon herself to...

There are a few phrases that no actor wants to hear.
For instance, if a director says "I have a lot of notes," it suddenly means the work day will potentially get a lot longer. "Thank you, we'll let you know" is not something a hopeful performer wants to hear from a casting agent immediately following an audition. Likewise, "We're looking for someone younger." Any one of these can cause great cracks in an actor's ego, which may be an actor's most prominent feature.
Most terrifying of all, however, might be "We can't see you as anyone other than Batman." This was something actor Adam West, according to a 2017 interview with Moviefone (the actor's last before his death) had said to himself a few times after "Batman" was canceled in 1969.
Typecasting, of course, isn't always a curse. Being typecast as a heavy or a villain, for instance, can sometimes assure...

Sometimes, it feels like Mephisto rumors have been around as long as the ageless Marvel supervillain himself. At the very least, you can count the passage of time by them. Remember when everyone thought Jake Gyllenhaal's character in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" would be Mephisto, only for the character to be revealed as an ex-Stark Industries employee with a grudge? What about when people were convinced Evan Peters' off-brand Pietro would be the demon in disguise in "WandaVision"? /Film's own history with Mephisto hype goes at least as far back as 2014, when we pondered the idea of none other than Al Pacino as the big bad.
The demon has long been on the mind of Marvel fans, even if he's yet to make his official Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Most recently, Sacha Baron Cohen's name has been thrown in the running, and with Deadline reporting that the "Borat" star might appear in "Ironheart,...

Batman: The Long Halloween has been embraced as a superb Batman tale, a solid mystery story, and a superlative effort from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It has remained in print since its arrival in 1996-97. Warner Animation tackled this in 2021, releasing it in two parts, which I liked when I reviewed them here and here.
The parts have now been sewn together into a far more satisfying single volume, upgraded to 4k Ultra HD, which incrementally enhances the overall enjoyment.
The 13-part story is set early in Batman’s career, with Loeb plumbing the Gotham underworld as established by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in Batman: Year One. Interfering in Carmine “The Roman” Falcone’s (Titus Welliver) gang operations is the arrival of the Holiday Killer. Tracking him with little effect over the course of a year are Batman (Jensen Ackles) and his grudging allies Captain James Gordon...

"They won't stop 'till we're all dead." Hulu has unveiled an official trailer for an intriguing sci-fi indie film titled Mother/Android, made by the screenwriter on The Batman and Little Fish. Mother/Android is set during "an unexpected war with artificial intelligence." Georgia and her boyfriend Sam go on a treacherous journey to escape their country, which is caught in an unexpected war with A.I. Days away from the arrival of their first child, the couple must face No Man's Land, a stronghold of the android uprising, in hopes of reaching safety. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Algee Smith, with Raúl Castillo, Oscar Wahlberg, Kate Avallone, Owen Burke, and Steven Robertson. It looks like the same plot as Children of Men, but about androids taking over instead.

After the shocking events of episode seven which saw Yolanda Montez abandon the mantle of Wildcat for her own sanity, episode eight focuses on Rick Tyler’s Hourman, who’s having issues of his own. It’s one of Stargirl‘s most powerful episodes yet, anchored by an incredible performance by Cameron Gellman. In the wake of the tragic events that occurred this week, we chat to Gellman about vulnerability, where Rick’s at, and where he’s headed.
Rick has long been one of Blue Valley’s most traumatized children. His parents were killed by Solomon Grundy and he’s been raised by his abusive Uncle Matt. But despite that...

Just in case anyone out there was on the fence about Eclipso, DC’s Stargirl this week revealed that, on top of everything else, the evil demon is racist to boot.
This Tuesday’s episode was set on the Fourth of July and started out sweetly enough, with school teacher Miss Woods driving out to Rick’s home to not only apologize for accusing him of cheating, but also to deliver college brochures and financial aid information. “College was a place I could start over again,” she shared — and maybe Rick can, too. Rick’s uncle, though, gets wind of and scoffs at the idea,...

What Happened This Week
It’s getting closer to Halloween, and it looks like Stargirl jumped into the theme of the season as this week’s episode is more horror than family friendly. The Justice Society fight their biggest fears, Eclipso finds a new host this week, and we actually get a tease of what this demon looks like. Spoilers, he looks like Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, Venom.
Eclipso’s Reveal
The episode starts 10 years ago when a young Cindy awakes from her sleep due to a nightmare where her father finds her and attempts to “change” her. Luckily it was only a dream as her mother tells her that they are safe and will not be found by Cindy’s father. Way to jinx that because once Cindy’s mother leaves the room,...

Stargirl Season 2 Episode 5
There’s a lot going on in Stargirl’s second season, from the Whitmore-Dugan clan’s attempt to adjust to life as a superhero family, the newly reconstituted Justice Society of America’s struggle to deal with the fallout from last season’s finale battle with Icicle, and, of course, the constant drag of summer school.
Real-life responsibilities are encroaching on our young heroes’ crime-fighting time. Courtney is trying to balance her superhero duties with her everyday life as a student and a sister, Beth’s worried about keeping her parents’ marriage together, Rick is having a somewhat bizarre crisis of conscience over the fate of a being he was determined to murder just a few short months ago. Let’s just say that none of this is precisely where we expected this story to go.

What Happened This Week
Stargirl is only two episodes into the second season, but it still is continuing it’s streak of being one of the most fun shows on television. This week is no different as we learn more about the new Green Lantern, Cindy begins to lose control over Eclipso, and Courtney finally realizes the true calling of Stargirl.
Green Lantern’s Light
The episode picks up right after last week’s fight as Courtney and Jennie call a truce to their disagreement. Standing in the kitchen, Jennie explains she was in an orphanage until recently being kicked out due to turning 18 years old. The only thing she received from the orphanage is a box from her brother, which contains Green Lantern’s (her father’s) ring. As soon as Jennie opens the box,...

Stargirl Season 2 Episode 3
Ever since that pink pen showed up back in Stargirl’s third episode last year, we’ve all pretty much been waiting to see who would claim Johnny Thunder’s infamous genie-summoning accessory. In “Summer School: Chapter Three” we find out – though likely not the way that most of us expected.
Perhaps we should have guessed that Courtney’s stepbrother Mike was destined to find some way to be part of the Justice Society of America. After all, the entire Dugan-Whitmore clan not only knows about Courtney’s secret identity as Stargirl, they’re all actively helping her with her quest to rid Blue Valley of both supervillains and generally nefarious criminals. It was only a matter of time, right?
Sure, none of us probably thought Mike would essentially become Mike Thunder, thanks to the pen that Courtney conveniently never returned to Pat.

Stargirl was fixin’ for a fight in the Season 2 premiere of the CW superhero series, and by the end of the hour, boy did she find one!
But first…. The new season opened with a flashback to “Decades Earlier,” where a young girl named Rebecca was forbidden by her mom from attending a friend’s birthday party across the street. When a (creepy af) little boy named Bruce appeared out of nowhere and goaded Rebecca into ignoring her busy mom, the lass scampered across the street. There, Bruce nudged Rebecca to steal one of the presents piled outside the front door.

Stargirl‘s optimism is still shining bright in Season 2, though two new presences — Eclipso, and The Shade — threaten to darken the young Jsa’s collective doorstep.
Voiced and eventually played by Nick Tarabay (Spartacus, Arrow), “Eclipso is an amazing character, for those who don’t know,” showrunner and Stargirl creator Geoff Johns noted at a recent presser. “He’s from the ’60s and he’s more of a demonic force in the same vein as, like, a Freddy Krueger or a Pennywise. What a week ahead!!
There are new shows galore across both streaming and broadcast. Fantasy Island (and it's so good) debuts on Fox, and Stargirl returns on a new network, The CW.
Titans drops on a new platform, too, on HBO Max, and Slasher: Flesh & Blood premieres on Shudder (and AMC+). See all of our recommendations below!
Saturday, August 7
8/7c Psycho Storm Chaser (Lifetime)
Who doesn't love some good old-fashioned storm chasing?
Well, Abby Fields probably doesn't when she chooses to weather a category 3 hurricane with her comatose patient rather than move her.
If that isn't a daunting enough experience for anyone, especially when it includes hunkering down with some undesirables, but what they didn't prepare for is a stranger inhabiting the peninsula, too.
Dr. Carl, a celebrity storm chaser by day and serial killer by night, is on the loose, and some heavy rain is the least of their worries!

Late “Glee” star Naya Rivera is voicing the role of Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) in the upcoming animated DC movie “Batman: The Long Halloween,” based on the hit graphic novel. Rivera finished recording her role before she passed away last July.
“Supernatural” veteran Jensen Ackles is voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman in the animated film. Ackles previously voiced Jason Todd aka the Red Hood in 2010’s “Batman: Under the Red Hood.” The animated film is due to be released this spring.
“Batman: The Long Halloween” was written by Jeph Loeb with art by Time Sale and ran for 13 issues in the Batman books from 1996-97. The story centered on Batman, early in his crime-fighting career, and a killer known as Holiday who terrorized Gotham City and struck once a month. When it comes to over-sized special edition comics, DC seemingly can’t wait to whip up a steady stream of one after another. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. These 80 Page Giants must be good-sellers for DC, and although nearly 10 dollars a go, they are good value for the reader. You get to see a whole load of creators jamming together on more characters than you can shake a stick at, and the odds are that you will enjoy the majority of the stories, if not all. DC do enjoy their themed specials as well, and I must admit to being a sucker for things like Halloween and Christmas specials down the years, and I’m no different now. This Special gives us 10 short and hopefully sweet peeks into the more mysterious corners of the DC Universe,...

Today at New York Comic Con, the stars of DC’s Stargirl joined creator/executive producer Geoff Johns to recap Season 1 and tease what’s to come in Season 2.
During the virtual panel with actors Brec Bassinger, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman and Meg DeLacy, Johns said that we can expect “a lot of bad guys, and a lot of bad things happening” in the series’ second run. “Everyone’s got a great journey ahead in Stargirl Season 2,” he added. “We broke the season a long time ago, but [we’ve now] broken the season even deeper.”
One of the main antagonists set to clash with Stargirl’s Justice Society of America in Season 2 is Eclipso, a life essence trapped inside a blue diamond. Once owned by the Injustice Society of America, that diamond was stolen in Season 1 by DeLacy’s Cindy, which will result in problems for the Jsa going forward.

DC’s Stargirl creator Geoff John said the sophomore season of the CW show will explore even more of the comic’s wealthy source material, from villains to new superheroes.
“I’m so excited to be doing season two with everybody because we have so many other things to explore with these characters and other avenues and other characters that existed in the world to meet and introduce,” he said at DC’s FanDome. “We’ll do it the best way we can and will do it our own pace.”

Announced at a panel adjacent to DC’s Fandome over the weekend, the rest of the slate of DC animated features for 2021 includes a couple of very interesting choices.
The first film due out is Batman: Soul of the Dragon, a ’70s kung fu movie but with Batman. It stars Grimm star David Giuntoli as Batman; Chairman Kaga’s nephew Mark Dacascos as DC apex martial artist Richard Dragon; Kelly Hu as Lady Shiva; James Hong as O-Sensei; and Black Dynamite himself, Michael Jai White, returning to the Bronze Tiger role he played in the Arrowverse. It’s an original story about Batman and former classmate martial artists tackling a mystery from their shared past.
Following that is another original story: Justice Society: World War II. Matt Bomer, the host of an IGN panel on the next movie, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, hinted that he may be part of the voice cast.

It’s all leading to this, the season finale of Stargirl! It’s been a fun season and I’ve been looking forward to how the writers will tie everything together.
The new Fiddler, Isaac Bowin, is taking his frustration out on the school bully by punching him in the face with his tuba. Before the teacher can take him off the football field to the principal’s office, the football field opens up and a giant satellite dish rises and discharges the shockwaves from Brainwave and the American Dream project.
Jordan is walking around town, that is now filled with local residents paralyzed and staring up at the sky, when he comes upon a little girl trying to wake her father up from the American Dream trance, he is in.

Stargirl has been one of the few good things about 2020. Smart, impressively crafted, and full of heart, the newest addition to The CW superhero roster has been bringing us some much needed joy. Sadly, the season has ended, but it finished on a high note with an action-packed and emotional episode that tied up some loose ends, had a few shocking surprises, and opened up a lot of potential for the already announced second season that will air exclusively on The CW. Check out our review for a full rundown of the awesome episode, but we’re here to breakdown that wild ending, all those stingers, and answer some of the most burning questions that “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Stargirl Episode 13
Stargirl’s first season, on the whole, is one of the strongest ever attempted in the DC television universe. There’s so much to love about this series, from its sunny, optimistic vibe and charming characters to its willingness to push boundaries, trust its audience, and make bold storytelling decisions. That its Season 1 finale doesn’t entirely stick the landing is probably expected – honestly, most of the Arrowverse shows never do finales terribly well anyway – but the emotional moments are as top-notch as ever, and “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” does a decent enough job of tying up loose ends and putting some intriguing new pieces in place for Season 2.
The sudden return of Joel McHale’s Sylvester Pemberton will probably drive the bulk of conversation following this episode – whether he’s the real Starman, back from the (presumed) dead,...

Two years ago, in Blue Valley, a single Pat and a single Barbara are sitting in adjoining diner seats when they both order the same type of milkshake. The coincidence sparks up a conversation between them and when the waitress tells them they only have enough for one banana milkshake, it results in them sharing the milkshake and the rest is history. Fast forward to present day and as we saw last week, Barbara walked in on Courtney and Pat talking to the Cosmic Staff. The secret is now out and Pat reveals everything about Starman, Icicle, the Cosmic Staff and any other superhero shenanigans. Once Barbara learns the truth, she is less than enthused about the turn of events, especially when Courtney insists her father was Starman. Barbara...

Last week introduced it to more heroes and villains in the form of Shiv (alter-ego of “mean girl” Cindy) and Sir Rick, the high school janitor with a magical sword. This week, we learn more about Shiv and Courtney realizes that her recklessness as a superhero has repercussions.
