The Originals, Season 2, Episode 20, “City Beneath the Sea”
Written by Carina Adly MacKenzie and Charlie Charbonneau
Directed by Leslie Libman
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Klaus takes a walk through Dahlia’s memories, Hayley chooses a family, Elijah and Rebekah attempt to keep Hope hidden, and Aiden is laid to rest.
Last week, Klaus was arguably the biggest weakness in an otherwise excellent episode, and not much has changed this week: he remains frustratingly temperamental and fickle in “City Beneath the Sea,” an episode that tries to garner sympathy for Dahlia and Klaus, two villains who believe themselves to be unjustly accused, and only serves as a reminder that they are, without a doubt, the villains of this story.
While Dahlia’s flashbacks/memories are interesting and do add another dimension to her character, they feel like too little, too late.

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 8, “The Brothers That Care Forgot”
Written by Charlie Charbonneau and Michelle Paradise
Directed by Michael A. Allowitz
Airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Rebekah and Hope run from Esther, Elijah becomes increasingly unstable, Hayley and Jackson find a solution to the werewolves’s enslavement, and Klaus enlists Marcel to help deal with Finn and Kol.
“The Brothers That Care Forgot” is one of the best episodes of the season, and not just because Rebekah and Hope make a rare appearance, though how many vampire dramas can beat the sight of an ancient vampire as handsome as Daniel Gillies cradling a newborn? Baby cuddling aside, the episode does an excellent job shifting the character dynamics around–several new teams are formed with surprising players.
One of this season’s most interesting developments is the subtle but divisive way the werewolves are differentiated from the vampires.

The Originals, Season 1, Episode 21, “The Battle of New Orleans”
Written by Charlie Charbonneau and Michael Narducci
Directed by Jeffrey Hunt
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Marcel uses some explosives and a couple of werewolf hostages to literally ignite a war, the witches seek a new ally, and Hayley struggles to protect her unborn child.
For a penultimate episode claiming to contain The battle of New Orleans, “The Battle of New Orleans” feels a bit anticlimactic, especially following last week’s excellent day of peace/wake party. Though not necessarily bad, the episode simply doesn’t deliver an epic battle worthy of the build-up it’s been given.
Despite the lackluster action, the episode sets up next week’s season finale nicely, especially with its chill-inducing ending. Klaus and Hayley’s unborn child has, up until now, seemed relatively safe from harm...

“The Casket Girls”
Written By: Charlie Charbonneau and Michelle Paradise
Directed By: Jesse Warn
Original Airdate: 14 January 2014
In This Episode…
We open on a flashback to the 1700s, and Rebekah giving a voice over about Casket Girls, French girls who were sent to the Louisiana territory to marry who they were told were gentlemen, but were usually louses. The girls were meant to class-up a seamy city. Despite this opening, and the title of the episode, the legend of the Casket Girls is never really delved into, other than it is an excuse to party in the French Quarter.
Anyway, Davina is busy scrubbing the compulsion from Cami’s brain. It is agonizingly painful, but she sucks it up - and is shocked when she remembers the whole truth about Klaus, Marcel, and her brother. Davina admits that Kieran knows all about Marcel - they are even...

The Originals, Season 1, Episode 10, “The Casket Girls”
Written by Charlie Charbonneau and Michelle Paradise
Directed by Jesse Warn
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Davina attacks the vampires, Camille breaks her compulsion, Rebekah protects her fellow females, and Sophie teams up with Hayley.
With half of a season down (and a full season pick-up), The Originals returns in “The Casket Girls” with overwhelming–and well-earned–confidence. This show clearly knows what it’s doing now and is settling into a tight, swiftly-moving groove.
Though unnecessary, the opening flashback and corny voice over serve to set up the episode’s overarching theme–females, and their need to look after one another. This is a male-dominated world and arguably a male-dominated show, but that doesn’t mean the females (all who are distinguished from one another by their various nuances and characteristics) are content following the men.

“Fruit of the Poisoned Tree”
Written By: Charlie Charbonneau and Diane Ademu-John
Directed By: Michael Allowitz
Original Airdate: 5 November 2013
In This Episode...
Klaus and Elijah are having a very “dignified” afternoon, reading and listening to classical music. Of course there is a dead body between them, a peace offering from Klaus, which Elijah refuses. And of course, Rebekah is the one who must clean it up. Elijah, who had been reading his mother’s spellbook, found what he needed and decides it is time to unbind Sophie and Hayley. He takes a page from the spellbook to Davina, who is pleased to see him. Elijah wants Davina to practice this spell, with a huge monkey’s fist knot (the one that Sophie used in her binding spell - unbeknownst to Davina). He promises that if she can learn this advanced spell, he will bring her another of her choice.

On this week’s The Originals, Elijah returns home in time to intervene with the Nola witches’ attempts to kill Hayley’s “devil baby,” Marcel becomes suspicious of Klaus’s loyalties, Rebekah threatens to leave, and Klaus watches over Camille.
For future reference, the best way to get Klaus and Elijah to calmly sit in a room together is to give each of them a book. Klaus, especially, likes a nice set of William Blake poems that relate shockingly well to his life. And sure, the poison apple metaphor is a bit heavy-handed, but overall it’s a lovely little thread throughout the episode. Though Klaus’s reading of the poem is much more like desired wish fulfillment than actual premonition,...

The Vampire Diaries, Season 4, Episode 17: “Because the Night”
Written by Brian Young and Charlie Charbonneau
Directed by Garreth Stover
Airs Thursdays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on The Vampire Diaries: Damon takes Elena out on the town, Caroline protesteth too much, and Silas finally has a body, if not a face
Several elements of “Because the Night” work well and provide interesting character beats and entertaining moments. However, on the whole, the writing lets down the characters and puts them in awkward, unearned, and unbelievable situations, prompting one of the trickier questions when part of a character’s journey fails- who’s at fault? Is it the actors, for failing to sell the moment? Is it the writer of the episode, for giving them out of character things to say? Is it the writers of previous episodes, for not properly building the character to where...

The Vampire Diaries Episode 417
“Because the Night”
Written By: Brian Young & Charlie Charbonneau
Directed By: Garreth Stover
Original Airdate: 21 March 2013
In This Episode...
Damon and Elena are out in New York, in Damon’s old stomping grounds (he was a NY punk - is anyone surprised by this?) Damon tells her that he just wants her to have fun, but he has an ulterior motive - find the cure. Will, the vampire he killed last week, owned an underground club called Billy’s (“The Factory was too clean; CBGBs was too high profile”). In the 1970s, Damon would kill people on the street and steal their IDs for Will; in return, Will let him feed in his club. Will had a repeat customer, a 5’7” brunette. Damon is pretty sure that is Katherine, and he is there to search Will’s records.
So Damon and Elena are hanging out at Billy’s and Rebekah shows up.
