Ashton Kutcher is terrific in “Jobs,” but the true stars are the geeks who look like angelic children from another planet: Josh Gad (Steve Wozniack), Lukas Haas, Ron Eldard, Nelson Franklin, Eddie Hassell. They are not famous, but they represent the creative mind at work and at play. They are the intellectual pool from which Steve Jobs got his ideas. And creativity is what this film, directed by Josh Stern and written masterfully by Matt Whiteley, is about. The creative process and how suits can destroy a living creative force like Apple Computer. Watching Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher) direct and manage.

Chicago – The revolution in technology, that has allowed the world to change completely in just two generations, was led in part by dreamers in a garage. One of those “Edisons” was Steve Jobs – the creator of Apple Computers – portrayed with an inventor’s instinct by Ashton Kutcher.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kutcher, and the approach that director Joshua Michael Stern and writer Matt Whiteley took with the character of Steve Jobs, are the highlights of the film. There is great respect toward the passion in the dreamers and innovations, and that type of creativity that changes our way of doing and thinking. Where the film doesn’t score points is within the “inside baseball” elements of the Apple Computer corporation. There is too much time given to boardrooms, marketing managers and staffing decisions, and while this is intriguing, it isn’t as interesting as the reflective vision that Steve Jobs gave his products.

Editor’s note: Kate’s review originally ran during this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but we’re re-running it as the film opens in limited theatrical release this weekend. Apple founder and technology visionary Steve Jobs changed the way the world connects and computes, created one of the world’s most revolutionary companies and recently died, so of course he is now being remembered by way of an unsatisfying biopic that could have been far more creative and inspired than the final product. Director Joshua Michael Stern (best remembered for the completely forgettable Swing Vote) works off a script by newbie scribe Matt Whiteley (a former marketing wonk who was commissioned to write the script by his boss, producer Mark Hulme) that, while well-paced and interesting, also fails to illuminate much about the man and skips over large chunks of his life. As Jobs, Ashton Kutcher does a fine job (sorry, had...

Jobs is the equivalent of a feature-length slow clap. It even begins with applause, as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (Ashton Kutcher, looking a lot like the actual Steve Jobs) addresses the company’s town hall in 2001, introducing the iPod. “What it represents is as important as what it is,” he says. “It’s a tool for the heart,” putting that emphasis on certain key words that marked Jobs’s tech visionary/marketing guru cadence. We’re barely a minute into the movie, and the music has already begun to soar triumphantly. Now, the people who made Jobs — director Joshua Michael Stern and writer Matt Whiteley — aren’t stupid. They know it’s too early to start with the exultant crescendos. They know that they don’t need to mythologize Steve Jobs, because our culture has already done so. Rather, the film attempts to start from the myth and work its way back,...

Vince over at Film Drunk just wrote a post about how many times The name "Steve" is said in this weekend's new film Jobs, a film I had the pleasure of skipping (it was either that or Kick-Ass 2) and based on all I've heard I made the right decision. Vince counted 73 total times the name was said, which immediately made me think of Titanic and how many times the name Jack and Rose are said in that film. Lo and behold, Vince posted a supercut of how many times those two names are said in Titanic and also included this quote from Albert Brooks on the Adam Carolla podcast that I'd never read before: "There are things I can't stand in movies, that can be so easily fixed. I don't like peoples' names... I'm gonna talk to you for an hour, and I'm never gonna say 'Adam.' You...

The new biopic "Jobs" is a solidly informative and entertaining "Brief History of Apple," as seen through the eyes of its co-founding genius. We experience 30 years of Steve Jobs' mercurial life and times, with plenty of tastes -- but only tastes -- of triumph plus a few dashes of comeuppance.
Arrogant, selfish, obsessive, an idealistic, perfectionist credit-hog who rolled over friends, adversaries, colleagues and lovers with a single-mindedness that fit his lurching, simian gait -- the movie about him only has time to hint at what made the man tick and can only touch on Steve's greatest hits and shortcomings.
It's superficial, but that plays into the hands of the film's star, Ashton Kutcher. He may be a screen lightweight, but the impersonation, starting with that famous walk, the famous explosions of temper, and the hissing, spitting, insulting take-downs the man was famous for, are spot on.

Chicago – The new film about the founder of Apple Computers, “Jobs,” is a tour de force for Ashton Kutcher, in his portrayal of Steve Jobs. Opposite to him is familiar character actor Josh Gad, as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Creating the ethereal atmosphere in the film is director Joshua Michael Stern.
Josh Gad and Joshua Michael Stern were recently in Chicago on a promotional tour for their new film, and provided insight to capturing the essence of what made those two “Steves” tick. Josh Gad has been a journeyman actor, cast in five TV series over the years (like “1600 Penn”), character film parts (“The Internship”) and in his most high profile, originating the character of Elder Arnold Cunningham on opening night of the Broadway smash “The Book of Mormon.” Joshua Michael Stern made his directorial debut with “Neverwas” (2005), and followed that up with “Swing Vote” (2008).

Unlike one of Jobs' own innovative creations, the details in this disappointing film don't add up to one spectacular whole
I'm not what you would really consider an Apple fanboy. I have an iPhone and I'm typing this on a falling-apart MacBook – a Pro, like a hooker – but I don't really know much about Steve Jobs, the modern messiah of the pocket gadget age. I know the basic outline, of course, as does anyone with even the vaguest knowledge of pop culture, but I'm certainly not an obsessive. But what I do know about is movies, and after seeing the premiere of Jobs at the Sundance film festival I can definitively say this: it sucks.
Yes, Jobs is bad, even worse if you spell it as jOBS like Diet Mountain Dew spilled on your keyboard and the shift key got stuck forever. It starts off in 2001 with Ashton Kutcher...

"Welcome to Apple Computers." After the first full trailer showed off pretty much the entire story arc of Steve Jobs in the appropriately named biopic Jobs from director Joshua Michel Stern, a new trailer is here full of critical acclaim, including a one-word pull-quote from our very own Alex Billington. This trailer uses Macklemore's chart-topping track Can't Hold Us, complete with a clever audio edit to fit with the presence of Macintosh personal computers, and the same cheesy but inspirational vibe that the entire film encompasses as it chronicles the highs and lows of Jobs' pursuit for technological innovation. Watch below! Here's the second trailer for Joshua Michael Stern's Jobs, direct from the film's YouTube channel: Jobs is directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Neverwas, Swing Vote) and written by Matt Whiteley and tells the true story of one of the greatest entrepreneurs in American history by chronicling the...

The first biopic on Apple founder Steve Jobs hitting big screens is Joshua Michael Stern's Jobs, featuring the surprise casting of Ashton Kutcher as the titular technological genius. The film isn't abysmal, but the scope of the story is limited and feels more like a TV movie than anything. Kutcher's performance isn't terrible, but the film only gives him a chance to be the angry, misunderstood workaholic, or the softspoken, inspirational mastermind, with little room for any middle ground (watch the trailer). Now a new poster tries to catch the eye using the multicolor palette of the old Apple logo, but it looks like Predator vision. Look! Of the two films that have arisen surrounding the life of the late Steve Jobs, I’ll admit that Aaron Sorkin’s is definitely the one I’m looking forward to most. That being said, I’m a big fan of both Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad, and am intrigued to see what they bring to the table for Joshua Michael Stern’s take on the renowned entrepreneur’s life.
The film is set to open this August in the Us, and Open Road have released the first trailer over on Yahoo Movies, giving us our first full look at the film, having seen the first clip surface just before its debut at Sundance this year.
Our man in the Us, Ty Cooper, was on hand to see the film out in Park City, and he was very much unimpressed by what he saw – you can read our review here.

"The Original Innovator. The Original Rebel." Open Road Films has finally debuted the first full trailer for Joshua Michael Stern's Jobs movie, the biopic about Steve Jobs, played by lookalike Ashton Kutcher. The film first premiered at Sundance this year to mixed reviews, and this trailer really goes all out selling it. No surprise there - it is Steve Jobs here. The ensemble cast of Jobs also includes Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak, Lukas Haas as Daniel Kottke, James Woods as Jack Dudman, Matthew Modine as John Sculley and plenty others. I hate to say it again, but they show a lot of the film in this trailer, so watch out. Give it a look. After feasting our eyes on the first Steve Jobs biopic to hit big screens at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, THR reports the film jOBS, starring Ashton Kutcher as the Apple founder and visionary, will not be getting released on April 19th as we heard earlier this year, and will also officially have a new title. Though the original title unnecessarily used the iPod capitalization style, the film will simply be called Jobs. In addition, the film has been delayed as Open Road Films wanted more time to market the film rather than rushing it out to theaters. It makes sense since we haven't even seen an official poster or a trailer for the film just yet. We weren't particularly blown away by the film (see our video review here), but it's not abysmal. The curtain closer at Sundance provides an overly reverential and saccharine view of a complex man possessed by ambition
Barely a year has passed since Steve Jobs died, aged 56, yet here we have the first of two biopics, completed in the nick of time, to close this year's Sundance film festival.
Director Joshua Michael Stern, working with first-time feature screenwriter Matt Whiteley, has his work cut out for him, given that it's an Aaron Sorkin-scripted flick that's to follow. No doubt wary of the fact, Stern opts to focus on arguably the most pivotal period in Jobs's life, from the time he dropped out of college and created Apple computers in his parents' garage, to the moment where the iPhone is poised to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world.
Casting a figure of such immense social and cultural import was never going to be easy. Kudos, then, to Ashton Kutcher who,...

In one of the most shocking casting moves of recent memory, Ashton Kutcher was chosen to play original Apple genius Steve Jobs in the simply titled biopic Jobs. This casting news was surprising on two counts. First off, Kutcher is an actor not typically associated with drama. Secondly, with That '70s Show and Dude, Where's My Car? being among his most popular works, this typically comedic performer is often typecast as a doofus. So taking on the role of Jobs, a controversial figure known and loved the world over, is a major risk for the star. Penned by Matt Whiteley, Jobs focuses on the entrepreneur's life between 1971 and 2000. The film directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) will reveal how Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple. We got a look at that era in a previously released photo. Now, Open Road Films is revealing a critical clip. Viewable below ...

Making its world premiere at Sundance tomorrow, jOBS chronicles the life of the late Steve Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher as the world-renowned co-founder of Apple.
We got our first look at Kutcher in the lead late last year, and followed it up last week with two new images, giving us our first official look at co-star Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak. And just before its premiere out in Park City, Et have given us the first clip from the film.
“In 1976, college dropout Steve Jobs heralded a revolution within the confines of his parents’ garage. Jobs, along with friend and technical wizard Steve Wozniak, unleashed the “homebrew” Apple 1 personal computer kit onto an unsuspecting public, producing 200 units by hand and shipping each one themselves (monitor and keyboard not included). Apple Inc. was born, and the world would never be the same. Today hundreds of millions of users around the world...

U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales.

Chronicling the life of the late Steve Jobs, Joshua Michael Stern’s jOBS will be premiering out in Park City this month as the Closing Night Film for Sundance.
Ashton Kutcher stars in the eponymous lead, and we got a great first look at him late last year, with some classic machinery in the background dating the image somewhat.
And with the film about to make its world premiere out in Utah, USA Today have debuted two new images, giving us our first look at Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak.

The annals of cinema history have seen many a pair of dueling projects treading over the same ground -- think about the two Truman Capote biopics a few years ago, or the dueling Alfred Hitchcock flicks this past fall. And after the death of Steve Jobs in 2011, two projects have joined that storied history. Whereas one has been moving at a slow and steady pace (the Aaron Sorkin-scripted and sure to be higher-budgeted film), the other, lower-budget and Ashton Kutcher-starring film, “Jobs,” has already been completed and is set for a closing night bow at Sundance. In fact, Deadline is reporting that the latter film now has a distribution deal in place with Open Road. Written by first-time screenwriter Matt Whiteley and directed by “Swing Vote” helmer Joshua Michael Stern, “Jobs” focuses on the first thirty years of the Apple co-founder's career with Kutcher as the turtlenecked pioneer.

The first of the two in-development Steve Jobs biopics is just about ready to make its way to a theater near you. Open Road films is now in negotiations to acquire distribution rights for Jobs, the new film from director Joshua Michael Stern with Ashton Kutcher as the Apple founder. The movie is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month. Deadline, which broke the news about the acquisition, says that the movie is set between 1971 and 2000, as Jobs faced trials and tribulations trying to get his tech company off the ground. First time writer Matt Whiteley wrote the script, and the indie's impressive supporting cast includes Dermot Mulroney, James Woods, Matthew Modine, Josh Gad, J.K. Simmons, and Lukas Haas. I’m told that Open Road will take on the film in a service deal with the producers, who’ll put upward of $10 million in P&A to release the picture; CAA negotiated the arrangement. Matt Whiteley wrote the script. I’ll provide more details when the distributor gets back to me, but I believe this deal will close imminently. So yesterday, Sundance essentially dropped a bomb of indie film wealth when they announced their premiere line-up, a slate that includes the long-awaited "Before Midnight," the new film from Brit Marling, and "jOBS," the much discussed biopic about the Apple founder, played by Ashton Kutcher.
With the announce came a flurry of new images from the films, including our first official look at Kutcher in his full Jobs garb. Along with the first official plot synopsis, the story of the man who would be iPod king has finally come into fuller view.

The Sundance Film Festival has released their movie premiere line-up for 2013, and there's a lot of films on the list that I'm really interested in seeing. A few of the most notable movies include Before Midnight, jOBS, and Chan wook-Park's Stoker, which is the movie I'm most excited about seeing at the festival.
I'm excited about this year's festival, it looks like we're going to have a ton of movies to see, so we'll be extremely busy. I hope to hell I can find the time to see all the movies I want to see while I'm there. It's always a challenge, but it's a challenge I love to face.
Look over the movie premiere line-up below and let us know if there are any films you're looking forward to seeing!

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.

From the products he brought to the market to his famously abrasive management style, Steve Jobs was a singular figure in American life — heck, in global life. So it follows that any feature film about him should also stand out from the crowd.
That’s certainly the belief of A-list screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who was tapped earlier this year by Sony Pictures to adapt Walter Isaacson’s eponymous biography of the Apple Computer cofounder. During a Q&A session at The Daily Beast’s Hero Summit, Sorkin revealed on Thursday his unusual plan for bringing Jobs’ story to the big screen.

Back in 1999 TNT aired a made-for-tv movie called Pirates of Silicon Valley, which told the story of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates' ascension to becoming the tech-icons we now know them to be. Part of Jobs' side of the story included his relationship with his high school girlfriend and the birth of his first child Lisa in 1978. This part of Jobs' life will apparently be explored to some extent in the upcoming Joshua Michael Stern indie biopic Jobs, as the role of Chris-Ann Brennan has been cast. To avoid any confusion before we proceed, Jobs is based on a script by Matt Whiteley, and is set to star Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad as Jobs and Steve Wozniak respectively. This is not to be confused with Sony's promising-looking biopic, Steve Jobs, which will be penned by Aaron Sorkin. According to Variety, Ahna O'Reilly has been tapped to play Brennan,...

A press release was sent out last week for Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs Biopic revealing that the film has started shooting in the original garage where Jobs founded Apple with Steve Wozniak. They also announce that the title of the indie film will be jOBS, the lower case j is a play in the lower case i that Apple uses in their projects. Maybe iJOBS would have made more sense.
The movie is being directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote, Neverwas) and the goal is to make the most authentic and accurate film about Jobs that they can. Here's some information on the film from the official press release:
The film covers Jobs from his early years as an impressionable youth and wayward hippie, through his initial successes and infamous ousting, to his storybook return and ultimate triumphs as a man who set out to change the world and did just that.

Without a distributor and under the direction of Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote), the Steve Jobs biopic known as Jobs with Ashton Kutcher in the title role is just getting underway as TMZ posted the photo of Kutcher on set compared to the real deal that you see to the right. Shortly after the pics surfaced a press release hit the wire announcing Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) was writing a screenplay for Columbia Pictures based on the best-selling biography of the legendary Apple co-founder by award-winning journalist Walter Isaacson. Shot fired? Why would Sony hire Sorkin to write a screenplay if they didn't have the utmost confidence the Kutcher-led biopic wasn't worth considering as competition? Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was quoted in the release saying, "Steve Jobs' story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time.
